https://www.thedailybeast.com/republicans-are-praying-for-a-kavanaugh-bounce-but-its-proving-a-bit-elusive?ref=wrap

Kane is the type of voter the Republican Party could use if it wants to hold on to control in the House. She resides in one of the cycle’s higher-profile toss-up districts and has a history of backing Republicans. She voted GOP until President Trump burst onto the scene in 2016. And she’s extremely politically active, having once left the hospital to go cast a ballot.

But this year, in part because of both Kavanaugh and Trump, she is not returning to her party roots. Kane says she will not back GOP incumbent Rep. John Faso (R-NY), who is trying to hold on to his seat in New York’s 19th Congressional District.

“I wouldn’t vote for Faso,” she said, citing a conversation she had with the congressman in which he made it seem to her that he would stand up to Trump. “If the man turned into Lazarus asking for that one drop of water, I’d say, ‘Ask the president, he’s got a lot of it.’”

Jane joins Bernie. :O)

I’m an educator. And I believe democracy depends upon an educated populace. Some of the important elements of education – inclusive with respect to human rights, accessible regardless of economic status, and essential in preparation for global citizenship – are also some of the most important aspects of a strong democracy.

Recognition that public funding for pre-school through university is not only an investment in the individual, but an investment in the future of the country, could shift the spending priorities of a nation while enhancing democratic values.

As we prepare our teachers, doctors, childcare workers, economists, lawyers and other professions for their chosen careers, we should also educate them for democracy. Perhaps we could learn from the Native American culture and cultivate a practice for our students – and our policymakers – of determining how today’s decisions will affect the next seven generations, impact the environment, and influence the growth and development of our children. Perhaps the media could assist by offering broader perspectives and fostering more debate on the facts, ethics and morality of particular stances regarding the economy, income inequality, budget policy and democratic principles in general.

Trump’s Velvet Coup: Kavanaugh Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg
I am watching my country going through a slow motion disintegration into civil war, conflict, and the rise of authoritarianism

The headline rings true. I’m feeling the possibility of a real division, like the Civil War….

The Brett Kavanaugh battle is just the tip of the iceberg. I am watching my country going through a slow motion disintegration into civil war, conflict, and the rise of authoritarianism. It’s a velvet coup d’état that controls the means of enforcement: the police, the courts, the political assemblies, the reins of corporate power, advertising and public relations.

Random outposts of media remain open—a tiny part of NPR which is otherwise busy normalizing authoritarian views on virtually every show; The New York Times gray lady still giving space to anti-authoritarian resistance actions. The networks are lost. All have caved to the shit-show that is Donald Trump. He’s the façade behind which the progressive legacy of the last 70 years is being dismantled: EPA regulations, civil rights protections, equal opportunity, health care (miserable as it is), the right to vote, citizenship itself.

White, male, religious extremism, backed by big money, is warping that mirror. This authoritarian extremism, cloaked in the language but not the reality of American history, has captured state houses, legislatures, courts, security forces, and, for now, the Congress of the United States and the White House, with all the executive power that office can control. It is a semi-visible, gradual coup d’état that’s well on its way to success.

He writes about the “looking glass” effect well: how killing blacks turns into police under seige, old taking care of elders turns into getting rid of parasites, and many more. Good article. Although his remedy, to start taking the conversation out to more people, without a method to do so, falls a bit short.

This fascist power grab has been cooking since 1964 when Goldwater got creamed. That did it for the FRighties. With the help of yahoos like Paul Weyrich, the moneybags like the Bush Crime Family, and the Religious Right, they slowly regained power. This was not an overnight development. There were defeats. That did not deter them. They just became more determined, and they learned from those defeats. The one thing that terrifies them is an informed, educated electorate. Educated voters always have done so throughout history. It’s certainly no big secret.

Hurricane ‘Monster Mash’ Michael is now making landfall right around Mexico Beach. Winds are clocking 150mph. Barometric pressure is 928–a record. My sis battened down the fort/casa and left very early this am to stay with my niece in Gainesville. I am breathing a YUGE sigh of relief! You look at some of the live footage and it will give you the willies. Looks like a tsunami–no kidding. Appreciate my fellow PWingers’ concern. 🙂 We’re safe here. I’ll say this: any redneck, cracker or religious fundie gets in my face about climate change, I will be very glad to carve them a new verbal ahole! T and R to the usual, excellent TPW suspects!!

Oy! This just proves than Biden just doesn’t get it.

Bush’s wars created too many veterans.

https://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/410788-biden-to-present-george-w-bush-laura-bush-with-liberty-medal

Former Vice President Joe Biden will award former President George W. Bush and former first lady Laura Bush the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal for their “commitment to veterans,” the center announced Wednesday.

The medal is awarded annually “to men and women of courage and conviction who have strived to secure the blessings of liberty to people around the globe,” according to the center’s website.

Biden, the chair of the National Constitution Center’s board of trustees, will present the award at a ceremony next month at the center’s headquarters in Philadelphia.

This is just as bad as him commenting on the Kavanaugh confirmation after his treatment of Anita Hill.

TheLeftistheCenter

Up is down left is right and sending people to war is a commitment to veterans (in that it creates them).

Newspeak at its finest…

Newspapers are investigating the Khashoggi murder while the CIA and State Department remain silent.

ANKARA, Turkey — One is the chief of forensic evidence at Saudi Arabia’s internal security agency. Another is an officer in the Saudi special forces who posted pictures of himself on social media posing in a living room with a shiny stainless steel handgun.

Two others appear to be members of the Saudi royal guard, pictured in a Saudi newspaper photograph next to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

All four were among 15 men that Turkish officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have identified as Saudi operatives who flew last week to Istanbul in pursuit of Jamal Khashoggi, a political dissident, who has not been seen since he entered the Saudi consulate there on Oct. 2. Turkish officials say that Mr. Khashoggi was killed at the consulate and that his body was dismembered and taken away — an allegation that the Saudi government has vehemently denied.

Trump is quick to take credit when the stock market goes up. Oh! Oh!

Dow plummets 550 points in worst drop since April, Amazon and tech shares lead the rout.

Stocks sank on Wednesday as a steep decline in tech shares and worries of rapidly rising rates sent Wall Street on pace for its worst day in six months.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded 550 points lower as Intel and Microsoft fell more than 1.5 percent each. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 2.6 percent.

The S&P 500 dropped 2.1 percent, with the tech sector underperforming. The broad index was also headed for a five-day losing streak — which would be its longest since late 2016 — and fell below its 50-day moving average, a widely followed technical level.

Both the Dow and S&P 500 were also on pace for their worst day since April.

The major indexes have fallen sharply this month. For October, the S&P 500 and the Dow are down more than 2.7 percent and 1.6 percent, respectively. The Nasdaq, meanwhile, has lost more than 5.5 percent.

It only got worse as the day progressed.

Dow plunges more than 800 points in worst drop since February, Amazon and tech shares lead the rout
The tech sector had its worst day in seven years, leading the Dow to its worst day in eight months.
“People are getting out of the high-flying tech names right now,” says Larry Benedict, CEO of The Opportunistic Trader. “I think people are under-hedged; there could be more pain ahead.”

Even bonds went down, as you probably know by now, very unusual.

TheLeftistheCenter

Bonds are confusing because when their ‘price’ goes down their ‘yield’ goes up and as yield goes down price goes up, so by having bond yields lower that means they went up.

Caitlin Johnstone does not hide her disdain for Nikki Haley.

As a lead up to her article.

Empire Loyalists Grieve Resignation Of Moderate Psychopath Nikki Haley

World War Three proponent and US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has announced her resignation today, to the dismay of establishment bootlickers everywhere.

“Nikki Haley, ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned, leaving the administration with one less moderate Republican voice,” tweeted the New York Times, without defining what specifically is “moderate” about relentlessly pushing for war and starvation sanctions at every opportunity and adamantly defending the slaughter of unarmed Palestinian protesters with sniper fire.

I’m not going to go over every single fawning, sycophantic tweet, but if you ever ingest poison and can’t afford to go to the hospital because of America’s disastrous healthcare system, you can always try going to Haley’s Twitter page and looking at all the empire loyalists she’s been retweeting who’ve been falling all over themselves to paint her as something other than the bloodthirsty psychopath that she is. If that doesn’t empty your stomach contents all over your screen, you are made of stronger stuff than I.

Marquette poll shows Scott Walker and Tony Evers in toss-up for governor while Tammy Baldwin holds lead over Leah Vukmir in Senate race

Republican Gov. Scott Walker was in a virtual tie with Democrat Tony Evers while Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin held a 10-point lead over Republican Leah Vukmir, according to Wednesday’s Marquette University Law School Poll.
Among likely voters in the governor’s race, Walker had 47 percent, Evers had 46 percent — well within the poll’s margin of error — and Libertarian candidate Phil Anderson had 5 percent.
Last month, Evers had a 5-point lead.
In the race for U.S. Senate, Baldwin led Vukmir by 53 percent to 43 percent, maintaining a double-digit advantage. The numbers suggest there would either be more ticket-splitting in Wisconsin this year than the state has seen over the past decade, or the gap between the two races would narrow before the Nov. 6 election.

Importantly the poll said people polled 47 percent were identified as Republican and 44 percent as Democrats. The last poll was with Evers up by 5 was more Dem voter leaning in the sampler. So this will be a dog fight till the end with Dem turnout being the factor. I figure Dane county (Madison) will turn out Yuge for Evers but He needs Milw county to turn out Yuge as well and hopefully he can siphon votes from the other rural districts that Walkers education policies have hurt. If we get a yuge dem turnout just maybe we can get rid of this asshat!!!! On another note those special interest outside money people that walker loves to talk about influencing WI elections has out spent Evers 4 to 1 on walkers behalf. And Evers is in a tie but as this particular pole leaned R in its sampling i’m still cautiously optimistic as I think their will be one more poll left before Nov 6th. Baldwin looks safe unless she has a meltdown of some type.

humphrey

I don’t think that many will be surprised by this.

What is missing from this comment is the fact that Kavanaugh took the hardline approach.

magsview

I imagine that, Kavanaugh taking the hardline approach, will be typical for him. He gets pats on the back from his conservative friends whenever he’s an asshole.

humphrey

I wouldn’t call this good publicity.

No one escapes the wrath of Bernie. LOL

https://thehill.com/policy/technology/410855-bernie-sanders-targets-facebook-and-google-on-kavanaugh

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is taking a shot at Facebook and Google as well as the GOP in a new video about Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

In the video posted on Sanders’ Twitter account, his senior advisor, Ari Rabin-Havt, criticized Republicans as being hypocritical in their arguments that Google and Facebook are biased against conservatives.
Rabin-Havt pointed to Facebook vice president of public policy Joel Kaplan’s support of Kavanaugh’s nomination and Google’s donations to the Federalist Society, a conservative legal organization that has been instrumental in picking conservative Supreme Court Justices, in making the argument that Google and Facebook are not biased toward the left.

Kavanaugh and fellow-Trump Supreme Court appointee Neil Gorsuch were both on the list of the Federalist Society’s potential nominees that President Trump picked from.

Google is among the society’s top class of donors who have contributed $100,000 or more to the organization.

Google gives money to liberal organizations as well, and like other tech companies tries to distribute its political donations equally along party lines.

There was a final debate in Tennessee between Marsha Blackburn and Phil Bredesen.

Although I am not impressed by Bredesen’s policies I would not have to hold my nose to vote for him( Although I don’t live in Tennessee). This is because I simply cannot tolerate Blackburn and what she stands for.

For a synopsis of the debate.

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/410891-five-takeaways-from-the-final-tennessee-senate-debate

Bredesen called for partisan compromise and wished his opponent well, should she be elected in November.

Blackburn tied the Democrat to the Clintons and slammed him for allegedly mishandling sexual harassment claims during his tenure in the governor’s mansion.

The debate highlighted Bredesen and Blackburn’s drastically divergent styles.

On one side, the former governor played the role of genteel, old-school politician. He often spoke softly and rarely veered into personal attacks on Blackburn’s tenure or character.

On the other, Blackburn was quick to the punch, casting Bredesen as a liberal Democrat who failed to connect with the conservative voters of Tennessee. She also tied herself closely to President Trump and his agenda.

There is more at the provided link.

He should have been on the attack more.
