Are you Earthbound or are you Human?

“I have chosen Earthbound — ‘bound’ as if bound by a spell, as well as ‘bound’ in the sense of heading somewhere, thereby designating the joint attempt to reach the Earth while being unable to escape from it, a moving testimony to the frenetic immobility of those who live on Gaia”

A one minute video that inspired Latour’s Gifford Lectures related to quotation above.

The Angel of Geostory

An article on the Gifford lecture and this video

Latour presented us the ‘angel of geostory’ – who features in his recent Gifford Lectures: a short video clip of a woman walking backwards towards the camera, facing her past, suddenly turning around to face the future and, in absolute horror, fleeing, before finally turning around to face what is coming… This is our modern predicament: eyes glued on the past, our primary aim to detach ourselves from its horrors. The result is that the revenge of Gaia comes as a total surprise. But this future we have in store for us is formed by the past we have rejected. It is no longer a matter of what will happen, but of how it will happen

Note the last sentence of the paragraph which I will repeat

But this future we have in store for us is formed by the past we have rejected. It is no longer a matter of what will happen, but of how it will happen

The article on the lecture continues

He also related a brief fictional story about a business man on a flight who finds himself reading a book about the state of the world and the injustice and destruction that is being perpetrated. The book grips him and he can’t stop reading it, gradually getting increasingly disturbed by what is happening. Later he finds himself sitting in a transfer lounge waiting for his next flight, still feeling deeply disturbed having just been exposed to the horrors of the apparent end of the world and feeling quite powerless about it. A beautiful young woman [apparently representing Gaia] approaches him and touches him on the shoulder. He turns to face her, enthralled by her beauty. She asks why he looks so miserable and he explains about the book. She agrees that what has happened is very disturbing but suggests that he read the next book in the series. She then goes on to explain that she is the author. Astounded that there can be a next book he asks her “What happens next?” She, of course, doesn’t tell him as she is yet to write it… [or something like that]

polarbear4

Udall and Wyden.

humphrey

The only redeeming thing that I can see is that Donnelly, HeitKamp, McCaskill and Nelson are no longer around to side with the Republicans.

orlbucfan

One problem: Nelson’s replacement is Sick Rott, much much worse.

magsview

My condolences orl.

In my state (CT) the incoming governor Lamont has begun leaking his agenda. Much of it SOUNDS good, we shall see.

This part is worrisome to me though, nebulous. One wants to feel positive, but easy to worry otherwise.

The health care committee is focused on making “Connecticut the healthiest state in the nation” by embracing a number of new initiatives. The group is recommending certification of community health workers, who provide front line medical care in community settings; promoting greater use of electronic medical consultations; address rising prescription drug costs and require Access Health Connecticut to adopt one “standard plan” consistent with value-based insurance design.

https://www.courant.com/politics/hc-pol-ned-lamont-women-20181217-aqlpifecjfad3mzoenab6rj7xq-story.html

I mean, how exactly would:
-certification of community health workers
-electronic medical consultations
-(a very vague statement about ‘addressing’) rising prescription drug costs
-some kind of “standard plan” “consistent with value-based insurance design” (?)

help me get health care next year? Lots of fancy language..

polarbear4

This can’t be legal. Didn’t the McCarthy days teach us anything?

polarbear4

magsview

Where will it stop?

Will future citizen applications include such language??
Will permanent resident application/renewals include such language?

Who’s running this country anyway? Israel govt or U.S. govt?

magsview

‘citizenship’ applications I meant.

TheLeftistheCenter

This is insane and no way it can stand up to constitutional scrutiny.

humphrey

Facebook shows him a harsh lesson. NOT!

For those who used to enjoy posts from OPOL he has one up at caucus99%.

OPOL!

Love the article’s title, will try to read tonight.

Thanks Humphrey.

orlbucfan

He’s been posting off and on over there ever since the site started. 🙂

wi60

Wondered where he went, will have to check that out

humphrey

You can decide on your own if it is propaganda or the truth.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-12-17/russia-waged-vast-pro-trump-social-media-plan-senate-panel-told?srnd=politics-vp

Russia’s plot to wield social media sites to divide Americans and aid Donald Trump in the 2016 election was even more massive and sophisticated than previously understood, and efforts to disseminate disruptive messages continue.

Those are the findings of two independent groups of researchers tasked by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee. The reports, released Monday, concluded that posts from fake Russian accounts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube led to more than 300 million engagements between 2015 and 2017.

Among the groups most heavily targeted by the Russians: African-Americans. The researchers found a cross-platform effort to target black Americans, often with memes about police brutality, and later feeding them voter suppression messages. Among the narratives shared with black audiences was a meme “I WON’T VOTE, WILL YOU?” Another said “Everybody SUCKS, We’re Screwed 2016.” Others urged votes for Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate.

My check from Putin should be arriving shortly.🚚

polarbear4

humphrey

I wasn’t sure where to put this comment between propaganda or the latest protests.

I decided on government propaganda.

humphrey

Some might consider this as me putting my thumb on the scale.

TheLeftistheCenter

The question that needs to be asked is not if the Russians tried to meddle (since the US meddles all the time and we all know Israel meddles in ours ), but if their meager investment would have any influence in an election where billions were spent?

There is no question they are going to try and mess with us, but its a tough argument to say they really influenced in any substantial way. If I had to come up with a conspiracy theory for all this I would go with something like:

Trump was pushed as the one person Hillary could beat but along the way he realized he could actually win and instead of being the fall guy he just ran with it. Thats why Hillary and the establishment are so mad, plus explains why he is both doing everything the establishment wants while also being hounded by them, its their way to keep him in line by always being one step away. They will only take that final step if he doesn’t play their game, otherwise investigations will just continue, always being one step away but never getting there.

That to me is a lot more plausible than Russias few $100k changed the out come.

wi60

Who didn’t put in their 2 cents worth on social media to meddle, Russia, North Korea, China, Iran, Turkey any of our allies? Then theirs the corporate interest’s world wide that most likely had a paid trolls as well. Then throw in to terrible candidates–one had to win. If Bernie runs the insurance and pharm and oil will pay Yuge $$$ to troll Bernie with false narritives.

TheLeftistheCenter

Exactly, in all the chatter from everyone its hard enough for even the people spending the millions and billions to get through, to say somehow the Russians were able to be over influential across all that noise is actually kind of absurd.

magsview

Benny

polarbear4

humphrey

Exactly what we need. Less competition! /S

humphrey

This leaves plenty of time to find a suitable candidate.

polarbear4

TheLeftistheCenter

This would be extremely impressive if she could pull it off, but I think i’m too much a realist to expect it to happen, I just dont see our leverage though she has impressed me enough before I’m not writing it off completely (like I normally would lol)

magsview

polarbear4

But Socialism!

humphrey

More from Lee Carter.Hopefully he soon will be on his way to Congress.

magsview

“Legislator’s not invited.”

humphrey

LOL. It is just Cuomo talking to his constituency. The hell with the public.

magsview

How much more obvious can you get?

This explains a few things about today’s reality.

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-12-17/yellow-vests-downward-mobility-middle-class

Just a few excerpts but the whole article is worth a read.

Capital garners the gains, and labor’s share continues eroding. That’s the story of the 21st century.

The middle class, virtually by definition, is not prepared for downward mobility. A systemic, semi-permanent decline in the standard of living isn’t part of the implicit social contract that’s been internalized by the middle class virtually everywhere:living standards are only supposed to rise. Any decline is temporary.

Downward mobility is the key context in the gilets jaunes “yellow vest” movement in France. Taxes and prices rise inexorably while wages/pensions stagnate. The only possible outcome of this structural asymmetry is a decline in the standard of living.

This structural decline in the standard of living of the middle class is complex. One of the definitive identifying characteristics of the middle class is that is supposed to be largely immune to the insecurity and precariousness that characterize much of the working class.

Another way to understand this downward mobility is: the elites no longer need a vibrant middle class to hold power and increase their wealth. The real money is in globalized capital flows, access to central bank credit and ownership of debt. The role of the middle class has largely been reduced to being compliant, passive debt-serfs who can borrow money to fill the yawning gap in their standard of living and make the payments.

magsview

As one who has been laid off several times (companies merging/closing) I certainly know all about “today’s reality”.

The thing is, the thing that elites still don’t seem to grasp, is that when the consumers don’t have money to spend, eventually it affects the bottom line of their portfolios. The stock market industry likes to talk about bond inversions, and slow growth overseas, etc, but they’re all too cowardly to address the elephant in the room.

polarbear4

They have a whole world to manipulate, before it all comes crashing down. The earth and her systems will have their say before they run out of populations to suck dry.

polarbear4

Ain’t it the truth.

humphrey

ICE gets deservedly sued.

https://thehill.com/latino/421746-detainees-sue-ice-over-access-to-lawyers

Three detained migrants are suing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), claiming agents are restricting their access to legal counsel.

The lawsuit from the three men, filed in Riverside, Calif., alleges that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers limit their access to telephone calls and that telephone calls from detention centers are too expensive, Bloomberg reports.

The plaintiffs also allege that mail is delayed and face-to-face access to lawyers is curtailed in immigration detention centers.

Immigration detainees are not provided free legal representation, as would detainees under criminal indictment, but have a right to outside representation.

This jeopardizes there opportunity for political asylum.

humphrey

Kyle Kulinski is right on with this tweet.

The comments to it are worth checking out.

magsview

I don’t think I thanked you for the thread jcitybone!

What do you think of the simmering chatter about Gabbard? Even in Hawaii they seem a bit wary.

This guy saying “it depends on how soon she can get the money”..”without a certain amount of money it’s sort of a forlorn hope”.

The focus of the very short segment actually centers in on whether Tulsi is even eligible, considering where she was born (American Samoa).

“Tulsi’s mother was born in Indiana-her dad, like her, was born in American Samoa, but HIS dad was born in Kentucky, so I think she’s alright.”

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2018/12/17/trending-tulsi-presidency-issue-miss-universe-home-alone-prank-toddlerography/

I think it’s worth it for her to do the rounds at least. Get some exposure. What do you think?

TheLeftistheCenter

As a territory it should make her automatically a citizen, just like PR.

magsview

Believe it or not, I posted that comment before seeing jcitybone’s reply to humphrey about Tulsi!

Kind of cool to see how in-sync we can be in our TPW nest. I’m giving out hugs tonight, TheLeftistheCenter, and if you don’t mind, I’d like to give you a bit {HUG} too. Really appreciate your perspective, your commentary. XO

magsview

polarbear4

This!

polarbear4

I never thought about it this way. Now we get our money by pushing people further into debt while we give tax breaks to those that haven’t needed one for years.

humphrey

I wasn’t going to comment anymore today but I couldn’t let this pass.

polarbear4

Don’t think it will matter much at this point. I’d rather people in politics just be truthful. Not nasty, but truthful.

humphrey

I am sure that this changed a lot of votes. LOL

Those Russians sure are sneaky.

humphrey

polarbear4

Yeah. Who was that intending to influence and why? LOL.

polarbear4

Oh, as this what you were talking about?

humphrey

Yep.Read some of the comments in this WOTB thread. You might even recognize some of the commenters.

Russian 2016 influence campaign tried to suppress vote of Bernie Sanders supporters by urging them to shun Mrs. Clinton in the general election from WayOfTheBern

orlbucfan

Not just a dick, but willfully, arrogantly ignorant!

humphrey

Joe Biden is a doofus.

humphrey

Things are getting interesting over in the United Kingdom.

If Malaysia can do it……

http://www.rttnews.com/2963263/goldman-sachs-subsidiaries-sued-for-breaching-securities-laws-in-malaysia.aspx

The Authorities in Malaysia have filed criminal charges for offences under Securities Laws against subsidiaries of Goldman Sachs investment bank, and its key employees related to the commission and abetment of false or misleading statements by all the accused in order to dishonestly misappropriate $2.7 billion from the proceeds of 3 bonds issued by subsidiaries of 1MDB, which were arranged and underwritten by Goldman Sachs. The three bonds were with a total face value of $6.5 billion.

polarbear4

Hoooo boy. Getting real.

humphrey

It is getting near Yellow Jacket time.😒

polarbear4

Here’s the rest.

polarbear4

Woah.

humphrey

The competition between those with presidential ambitions to prove that they are progressive could be beneficial to the 99%.

polarbear4

Indeed!

orlbucfan

How about shutting down/nationalizing big PHrMA while you’re at it, Liz.
