Do you ever notice when Bernie is listening to an opponent or some misguided TV personality makes an unsubstantiated comment that borders unfairness? Bernie’s ears prick up and one can see the waggling of the finger signals that he wants to call that person to the floor where most of us reside.
Today I had a similar reaction when I saw this news in the OT and I wanted to bring a little more attention to it. It’s Jason Chaffez’s
demand musing that Congress receive housing stipends in addition to their $174,000 annual salary, free gym, and heavily subsidized health insurance, in which Congress will be kept immune from having to give up, thanks to Obamacare. From the Hill:
Just days before he resigns from Congress, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said Monday that House and Senate lawmakers should receive a $2,500 per month housing allowance — something he explained would help ease housing costs for members who can’t afford two mortgages or rents.
“I really do believe Congress would be much better served if there was a housing allowance for members of Congress,” Chaffetz told The Hill in an interview in his Capitol office, where he sleeps whenever he’s in Washington. “In today’s climate, nobody’s going to suggest or vote for a pay raise. But you shouldn’t have to be among the wealthiest of Americans to serve properly in Congress.”
A $2,500 monthly allowance would cost taxpayers about $30,000 a year per lawmaker, or roughly $16 million a year for all 535 members.
It “would allow the non-millionaires to participate and you would be able to have your spouse join you here,” said Chaffetz, 50, who’s spent 1,500 nights away from his wife and children during his eight-plus years in Congress. “If I wasn’t buying as many airline tickets, it would ultimately be less expensive.”
Now here’s my Bernie waggin’ finger on Chaffez’s idea:
Chaffez’ party refuses to give a $15 minimum wage. The answer has always been coming from the Chambers of Commerce, whose
Fortune 500 members say $15 a hour would prevent them from hiring employees or paying merit beyond the $15.
Chaffez’s request is for slop for those who deserve the least at the trough. Here’s why it is a burden of unfairness:
District of Columbia (DC) 2017 Hourly Minimum Wage
$11.50 / hour
DC Weekly Minimum Wage 1
$460.00 / 40-hr week
DC Yearly Minimum Wage 2
$23,920.00 / year
And Chaffez is asking for a $30,400 rental/housing stipend?
Remember this is the same piggie who said the working class or poor would have to choose between buying a smartphone and health care.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) on Tuesday said Americans may have to choose between purchasing a new iPhone or paying for health insurance.
“You know what, Americans have choices. And they’ve got to make a choice,” the House Oversight Committee chairman told CNN’s “New Day,” one day after the House GOP unveiled its plan to replace ObamaCare.
“And so maybe, rather than getting that new iPhone that they just love and they want to spend hundreds of dollars on, maybe they should invest in their own healthcare.”
Does Chaffez have to even pay for his cell phone? NYDN uncovered this little tidbit from a couple of months ago:
The campaign committee for the Utah Republican, who drew scorn Tuesday for saying low-income Americans should sacrifice “that new iPhone they just love” to afford health care, has spent more than $12,000 on phone charges since late 2014, finance records show.
That includes one charge in 2015, of more than $1,000, for a new cell phone.
FEC records show the Friends of Jason Chaffetz committee filed more than 20 expenditures for Verizon Wireless telephone use between November 2014 and August 2016, each one usually worth hundreds of dollars. One Verizon expenditure in August 2016 cost $972, the records show.
Why don’t R’s ask their favorite political charity for their housing? That’ll be next on the docket since Democrats aren’t in the mood to fight against Citizens United either. Seems to me from Chaffez’s example, R’s can get housing via their campaign contributions pretty easily or find some way to get subsidies without our forced taxpayer monies.
Reminds me of that George Harrison tune, “Piggies”:
Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse
Always having dirt to play around in
Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt
Always have clean shirts to play around in
In their sties with all their backing
They don’t care what goes on around
In their eyes there’s something lacking
What they need’s a damn good whacking
Everywhere there’s lots of piggies
Living piggy lives
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon
