It did not exactly make for riveting video this month when Senator Jeff Merkley, Democrat of Oregon, was turned away from a converted Walmart at the Texas border that is housing hundreds of migrant children who have been taken away from their parents by the Trump administration.

Shirt sleeves rolled up and cellphone in hand, Mr. Merkley spent the better part of half an hour waiting outside the shelter’s doors, talking calmly to the cameras until the police arrived, at which point the shelter’s supervisor emerged and asked him to leave. He politely complied.

But when the social-media savvy senator streamed the encounter on Facebook Live, it promptly went viral, setting in motion a heated debate that ultimately forced President Trump to reverse himself, and issue an executive order that migrant families be kept together when they are apprehended at the border.

Now the mild-mannered Mr. Merkley is having a breakout moment. A darling of the progressive movement, he has until now been an under-the-radar presence in Washington, overshadowed by his high-profile colleagues, Senators Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Though a champion of same-sex rights and environmental causes, he has not been a legislative standout, and is known mostly as the only senator who endorsed Mr. Sanders over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries.

Protestors gathered outside Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen’s townhouse Friday morning, playing audio of detained migrant children and chanting “Free the kids!”

The demonstration took place just days after she fled a Mexican restaurant in Washington while being heckled by protestors.

The protest, organized by the progressive group CREDO Action, took place at 7:30 a.m. In the pouring rain, protestors shouted several chants over megaphones, held posters that read “Child Snatcher” and played the audio clip released by ProPublica over a speaker system.

Nielsen, who was home at the time, had to walk by protesters shouting “Shame!” as she left her house.

I hope the operator and the train executives face criminal charges! Who thought it would be ok to go through a flooded section of farmland???

Train carrying oil derails in northwestern Iowa, prompting evacuations

Photos and video posted on social media show more than a dozen oil tankers jackknifed across flooded farmland, with oil leaking into the water.

Jacob Faber, who lives nearby, said many in the area had spent the previous night volunteering with flood recovery efforts, trying to fight off the rising waters that were blocking roads and covering expanses of land.

There was water on the train track and the train tried to go over it,” Faber said.

Farmland! Who needs food anyway..

I have to post Cathy’s tweet because I’ve run out of free NYT articles for the month.

There is a work around for this. I use 2 browsers both Chrome and Edge. On edge in the settings i choose to clear the cookies and history after shutting down the program. Viola unlimited articles.

One more tweet, because it’s a good one, imo.

I’ve been so busy I didn’t even know that Krauthammer died. This business of being super-polite when well-know figures die is absurd of course. Krauthammer did what he did. Are we all supposed to pretend that he didn’t have a hand in our still-going-on Middle East fiasco??!

humphrey

The Onion has a not so glowing tweet for Krauthammer.

I lied this is the last tweet of the day!

Rahm and Elon’s Public-Private Partnership

Rahm Emanuel’s “public-private partnership” with Elon Musk looks a lot like the parking meters privatization that still haunts Chicago. That’s no accident: such partnerships are massive giveaways to corporations.

It looks like Republican recruiting for the upcoming elections is doing well.

Owner of the bunny ranch in Nevada, and the Evangelicals have no problem voting for him with an R behind the name. If it were a D they would be spouting biblical quotes and damming the D straight to hell

The headline of this article is quite deceptive!

http://thehill.com/latino/393746-all-separated-migrant-children-in-cbp-custody-will-be-reunited-with-parents-friday

THERE IS A BIG CATCH!

All of the unaccompanied migrant children currently in the custody of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) are expected to be reunited with their parents on Friday, according to CNN.

“CBP expects that all unaccompanied children in their custody who were separated from adults who were being prosecuted will have been reunited with their families,” a CBP official told CNN on Friday.

According to CNN, the reunions do not include the 2,300 to 3,000 children currently in custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Most of the children being reunited with their parents on Friday would be those who were detained within the last 72 hours and who weren’t already transferred out of CBP custody.

The official told CNN that some children will not be reunited in cases where “the familial relationship cannot be confirmed, or believe the adult is a threat to the safety of the child, or the adult is a criminal undocumented immigrant.
