How are my birdie friends doing tonight?
I thought I’d share a piece about Charles Darwin that I read today. It’s not recent, was posted in 2010, but I’d never see it before, and it was fun to read about some scientific research about altruism/sympathy/compassion (Darwin’s word for it back then was “sympathy”).
In 1871, eleven years before his death, Charles Darwin published what has been called his “greatest unread book,” The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. His little-known discussion of sympathy in this book reveals a facet of Darwin’s thinking that is contrary to the competitive, ruthless, and selfish view of human nature that has been mistakenly attributed to the Darwinian perspective.
In the fourth chapter, entitled “Comparison of the Mental Powers of Man and the Lower Animals,” Darwin explained the origin of what he called “sympathy” (which today would be termed empathy, altruism, or compassion), describing how humans and other animals come to the aid of others in distress. While he acknowledged that such actions were most likely to occur within the family group, he wrote that the highest moral achievement is concern for the welfare of all living beings, both human and nonhuman.

I also learned that the expression ‘the survival of the fittest’ came from someone named Spencer (I don’t know who that is tbh). It would seem that Darwin was more complex than the distant observer I thought he was.
Those unacquainted with his writings, and even some scientists, are unaware of Darwin’s commitment to the unity of mankind, his abolitionist convictions, and his intense interest in moral principles and human and animal welfare.
De Leon, 50, said he wants to join the U.S. Senate to fight the policies of President Donald Trump.
“He disregards our voices. Demonizes our diversity. Attacks our civil rights, our clean air, our health access and our public safety,” the campaign email said about the president.
De Leon will make a formal public announcement in Los Angeles on Wednesday.
Please feel free to post away! I’ve been out of the loop this weekend so really have no idea what’s been going on.
