Roots Action, which, as you may know, was founded by anti war activists David Swanson and Norman Soloman and journalist Jeff Cohen has an important petition on the rootsaction.org web site to the Secretary of the Army against punishing Chelsea Manning with solitary confinement for her own recent suicide attempt:
Chelsea, as you may know, as an act of conscience, leaked info about the Iraq War and the war in Afghanistan as well other classified info listed at the bottom of her Wikipedia page to inform us what was being done in our name with our tax dollars and wound up under harsh conditions in prison. Chelsea is a very young, transgender woman who was tormented for years by the social pressures against her trans identity and more recently by her pain trying to cope with her knowledge of what was in the leaks. Much like Daniel Ellsberg before her and Edward Snowden and wikileaks founder, Julian Assange, challenged to perform a dangerous act of conscience.
The story of her courage and sacrifice is documented here:
She should be honored as a hero, IMO, by all Americans, including those who serve in our armed forces and whose lives should be valued by our politicians instead of squandered by them on wars to control oil in foreign lands.
i feel that Bernie Sanders would have taken that stand. And we now seem doomed to follow a continuation of 70 years of misguided Cold War thinking.
Historian, Hajimu Masuda’s works have contributed much to the study of how we’ve driven ourselves to wars based on the illusions and lies embedded in that Cold War thinking:
