Jeanine Pirro Calls for Paul Ryan to Step Down After Health Bill Failure

Jeanine Pirro, a Fox News host, is a longtime friend of President Trump. So when Mr. Trump said on Twitter on Saturday — a day after his crushing defeat in the House on health care — that people should watch her show that night, political observers began guessing what was in store.

What she delivered was a diatribe against the House speaker, Paul D. Ryan.

“Paul Ryan needs to step down as speaker of the House,” Ms. Pirro, a former prosecutor, said at the opening of her show. “The reason? He failed to deliver the votes on his health care bill.”

snip

On Fox News on Sunday, Mr. Trump’s chief of staff, Reince Priebus, an ally of Mr. Ryan’s, said he had not spoken to the president about the Twitter post, but he called the timing “coincidental.”

Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Mr. Ryan, said, “The speaker and president talked for an hour yesterday about moving forward on the agenda, and their relationship is stronger than ever right now.”

In a related story (get your hankies out/s):

Paul Ryan Emerges From Health Care Defeat Badly Damaged

But after a humiliating defeat, which many Trump advisers are eager to pin on the speaker, Mr. Ryan is now tasked with defending not just his leadership abilities but his very brand of conservatism in a party fitfully searching for a coherent policy identity that can deliver tangible victories.

In this first fight, Mr. Ryan’s more orthodox right-leaning vision was co-opted only halfheartedly by Mr. Trump, who has few fixed political beliefs, in service of a bill the president never well understood, even as he laid on the superlatives in praising it. Now, Mr. Ryan must tug a ruptured conference toward future agenda items, like overhauling the tax code, made all the more difficult by this initial failure.

“Oh, I’m sure he’ll get blamed,” Representative Billy Long, Republican of Missouri and a vocal Trump supporter, said of the speaker as he left the Capitol on Friday, making clear he did not believe this would be fair. “He’ll get blamed for everything.”

The episode not only demonstrated an inability to honor a longstanding pledge that powered Republicans through a string of election cycles. It was also a remarkable setback for Mr. Ryan as the body’s principal arm-twister, in his first major test as the speaker under a Republican president.

In January, he coasted to re-election with almost unanimous party support, prompting allies to gloat that he had tamed the hard-line House Freedom Caucus far more deftly than his predecessor, John A. Boehner.

By Friday, his bill had at once alienated those archconservatives and more moderate members who abandoned the legislation as Mr. Ryan and Mr. Trump began caving to demands of the far right, to little effect.

“We were a 10-year opposition party, where being against things was easy to do,” Mr. Ryan said at a sheepish news conference shortly after the bill was pulled, adding with uncharacteristic candor that Republicans were not yet prepared to be a “governing party.”

Trump is taking the defeat of healthcare repeal like a true leader. Ha!

I had also seen some rumors on twitter that Reince’s job was possibly in jeopardy, but I didn’t see any corroboration of other tweets.

Physicists Find That as Clocks Get More Precise, Time Gets More Fuzzy
The weight of time.

A team of physicists from the University of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences have applied quantum mechanics and general relativity to argue that increasing the precision of measurements on clocks in the same space also increases their warping of time.

Let’s take a step back for a moment and consider in simple terms what physicists already know.

Quantum mechanics is incredibly useful in describing the Universe on a very tiny scale, such as sub-atomic particles and forces over short distances.

As accurate and incredibly useful as the mathematics supporting quantum mechanics might be, it makes predictions which seem counter-intuitive to our everyday experiences.

NORWAY’S UNDERWATER LASER-SHOOTING DRONE ZAPS PARASITIC LICE THAT LIVE ON SALMON

These nasty underwater lice attach to salmon and then feed on them. It’s a massive issue, and one that salmon farmers collectively spend more than $1 billion annually battling. Considering that Norway is by far the biggest salmon farmer in the world, accounting for around half the 2.5 million tons of salmon farmed each and every year, it’s an especially big problem there.

polarbear4

I’d like to see fish farms pretty much go extinct. We wouldn’t need them if we took care of the ocean and rivers. And they often use genetic engineering.

And they invariably get out and mate with wild fish, which damages the wild dna.

Vermont’s US Delegation Address Packed Townhall

From the Burlington Free-Press:

HARDWICK – Members of Vermont’s congressional delegation told hundreds of constituents at a rousing town hall meeting Saturday that the defeat of the Republican health plan was “a victory,” with Sen. Bernie Sanders telling the cheering crowd that he plans to introduce a “Medicare for all” bill soon.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Peter Welch said he would introduce the same bill in the House of Representatives.

“It wasn’t just we defeated them,” Sanders, an independent, said. “It was how we defeated them,” with rallies around the country, town meetings and people standing up and fighting back.

“No, we’re not going to give $300 million in tax breaks to the top 2 percent and then throw 24 million Americans off of health insurance. Ain’t gonna happen,” Sanders said.

Welch called the Republican health plan designed to replace the Obama-era health law known as the Affordable Care Act a tax cut bill masquerading as health care.

“This health care bill was not the art of the deal. It was the art of the steal,” he said.

The packed town hall meeting in a school gymnasium was a way for residents to address the delegation all in one forum.

“These are not normal times … they’re scary times,” said Democratic U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy.

Bernie stops CNN’s Dana Bash in her GOP talking points

“Will you tell your fellow Democrats, ‘stop being intransigent’, let’s get together and work with the President?”

Bernie fires back, “whoa whoa whoa whoa, Dana, Dana,…the Republicans, these guys have the majority, they did not include…[us]”

Watch the video clip below:

Source: Politicusa (a group I’m not crazy about, but they are doing a service here)

The point here is that Trump blamed the Democrats for not supporting the bill. By repeating Trump’s talking points, viewers would assume that was true. But Bernie busted that notion in a hurry.

At a Vermont town hall yesterday, Bernie Sanders announced he’s introducing legislation in a couple weeks for Medicare-for-All Single-Payer Healthcare (at 3:35):

It’s being brought up in town halls all over the country including red states. Here’s a passionate speech from a woman who struggles getting care for her paralyzed son in West Virginia (At 18:42):

“Is everybody in the room ready for healthcare for all people? We’re at the mercy of people driven by profits. It’s time for a change, it’s time to remove the money from politics, so that they’re working for us, and they’re not working for the insurance companies and their lobbyists and the people who want to make money off the sick. It’s sick to profit off a person who’s sick!”

Nancy Pelosi was asked to support Single Payer in her town hall yesterday, but she just gave the old “if I was designing the system from the start…” excuse.

A Gallop poll last year showed 58% of Americans favor it – http://www.gallup.com/poll/191504/majority-support-idea-fed-funded-healthcare-system.aspx

Wonder if it is the same bill that Caitlin talks about–thanks humphrey for pointing this out.

Obamacare Is A Corporatist Policy Wearing A Progressive Hat; Push For Something Better

H.R. 676 already has 72 Democratic congressional co-sponsors as of this writing, and there is a growing amount of support for it in progressive circles. Flaws can be found in it by anyone who’s looking for them, but it is infinitely better than the system America has now, and it’s infinitely better than anything the Republicans are likely to come up with as well. This is yours for the taking, America. For the first time since the Sanders campaign, progressives finally have a solid positive thing to fight for, rather than just the long, long list of things both sides of the political aisle are giving us to be against. This is a hugely important thing for our movement to have, because it directs our energy in a singularly focused direction.

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN)Hillary Clinton on Friday cast Bernie Sanders’ plan for single-payer health insurance as an “idea that will never, ever come to pass.”

The swipe builds on Clinton’s repeated rhetoric against the Vermont senator’s proposed single-payer, Medicare-for-all health care plan that he proposed earlier this month. The plan would provide health coverage to all Americans but would be paid for by raising taxes on

http://thehill.com/policy/cybersecurity/325606-democrats-step-up-calls-that-russian-hack-was-act-of-war

Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) most recently accused Russia of engaging in warfare.
“I think this attack that we’ve experienced is a form of war, a form of war on our fundamental democratic principles,” Coleman said during a hearing this week at the House Homeland Security Committee.

“I actually think that their engagement was an act of war, an act of hybrid warfare, and I think that’s why the American people should be concerned about it,” said Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.).

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s ranking member, has similarly described the election meddling as an “attack” and likened it to the United States’ “political Pearl Harbor.”

Instead of admitting that Hillary ran a piss poor campaign and moving on we get this.

Putin didn’t twist the arms of rust belt voters who voted for Trump because he offered them some form of hope rather than “America is all ready great.”

Hillary had no shortage of money as she outraised her opponent.

Putin didn’t stop her from visiting Wisconsin during the campaign.

President Trump gave German Chancellor Angela Merkel a fake bill for NATO defenses estimated at £300 billion, The Times of London reported on Sunday.

Trump reportedly handed Merkel the invoice during her trip to Washington, D.C. earlier this month.

“The concept behind putting out such demands is to intimidate the other side, but the chancellor took it calmly and will not respond to such provocations,” a German minister told the newspaper.

This follows his smooth handling of interactions with Mexico an d Australia. HA!

From Kristoffer Hellen, another writer at Newslogue:

If you think Bernie has betrayed us, you are the cat’s paw

Unfortunately, this sense of betrayal being sewn has found a receptive audience among some progressives. In particular, it resonates with Greens who feel resentful that Bernie did not accept Jill Stein’s offer to run on the Green ballot. As a Berner gone Green, I too felt disappointed, but not betrayed. It can be hard to accept this, but Bernie is a pragmatist, not a purist, and he knows how the system works better than any of us—even Chris Hedges, the most prominent “Bernie betrayed us” proponent. As I argued in my last article, Bernie made a strategic retreat to protect his popularity in order to continue fighting the establishment from the inside and he will surprise us when the time is right.

If Bernie was really a sheepdog for the Democratic Party, why would he drop the bombshell of calling it the Titanic? He wouldn’t. And therein lies the final irony. Progressives who have succumbed to this “Sheepdog Bernie” narrative and are pushing it on others are doing what the establishment wants—to undermine Bernie’s growing popularity from within—and have thereby themselves unwittingly become the establishment’s sheepdogs and its cat’s paw. They are doing exactly what the Clinton supporters who picked up the “Bernie Bro” smear, the establishment’s former cat’s paw, did during the primaries.

Don’t be the cat’s paw. Support Bernie and think for yourself. You can do both at the same time, believe it or not.

Adorable kitty with meme, too, or is that woozie? i can never remember. :O)

Fresh off a defeat on U.S. healthcare legislation, the White House warned rebellious conservative lawmakers that they should get behind President Donald Trump’s agenda or he may bypass them on future legislative fights, including tax reform.

The threat by White House chief of staff Reince Priebus to build a broad coalition on tax reform that could include moderate Democrats came as the Republican head of the tax-writing committee in the House of Representatives said he hoped to move a tax bill through his panel this spring.

Is Hillary Grooming Chelsea Clinton for White House In 2020 – Chelsea Vs Trump? [Opinion]

Hillary Clinton does still appear to be the head of the Democratic Party, or possibly a self-appointed one, as no one has stepped out as a front-runner since her ill-fated presidential run. A bit of authority is seen in her tweets, with her latest one claiming “victory” after Donald Trump pulled the healthcare bill out of the House. She sounds as if she is the general who just won a battle.

It could be that Hillary Clinton is having a tough time letting go of the reins, which might explain why it appears today that Chelsea is being groomed for a political run. While whispers of the different political positions that are possibly in Chelsea’s scope are heard online, Fox and Friends Weekend live asks if Chelsea is eyeing the 2020 presidential election.

The New York Times reported on how Chelsea’s tweets have grown in number since Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election. Chelsea Clinton’s Twitter page was once used more like a cheer leading tool for Hillary Clinton’s campaign run, that is up until November.

Once it became clear that Donald Trump was indeed the next president of the U.S., Chelsea’s tweets escalated in number, averaging about 10 a day in February with her over 300 tweets. Back in November she had 142 tweets posted for the entire month. While she is no longer urging the American public to vote for her mother, she is pulling apart Donald Trump’s administration, policies and actions.

Hillary can’t head back into the woods soon enough for me.

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-03-26/trump-said-to-issue-far-reaching-reversal-of-obama-climate-push

President Donald Trump is set to sign a sweeping executive order on Tuesday aimed at promoting domestic oil, coal and natural gas by reversing much of his predecessor’s efforts to address climate change.

The document lays out a broad blueprint for the Trump administration to dismantle the architecture that former President Barack Obama built to combat the phenomenon, according to details shared with Bloomberg News. Some of the changes would happen immediately, while others would take years to complete.

The order will compel federal agencies to quickly identify any actions that could burden the production or use of domestic energy resources, including nuclear power, and then work to suspend, revise or rescind the policies unless they are legally mandated, are necessary for the public interest or promote development.

The Washington Post detailed the House GOP’s fight over the ObamaCare repeal and replacement plan this week, rounding up the dramatic details of leadership’s fight to win support for the measure.

At one point, the paper said, House Speaker Paul Ryan (Wis.) got down on one knee to plead with Rep. Don Young of Alaska – the longest-serving Republican in Congress — to support the bill. (He was unsuccessful.)

Since this is an open thread, thought I’d post an article title about a MSM guy who is a graduate of my high school. He was one of the editors of the school newspaper, went to college, then went to work for WFAA in Dallas, was picked up by national CBS as a reporter.

Scott Pelley is pulling no punches on the nightly news — and people are taking notice

Perhaps the most notable one, on Feb. 7, went like this:

“It has been a busy day for presidential statements divorced from reality. Mr. Trump said this morning that any polls that show disapproval of his immigration ban are fake. He singled out a federal judge for ridicule after the judge suspended his ban, and Mr. Trump said that the ruling now means that anyone can enter the country. The president’s fictitious claims, whether imaginary or fabricated, are now worrying even his backers, particularly after he insisted that millions of people voted illegally, giving Hillary Clinton her popular-vote victory.”

You can read the article here: http://wapo.st/2nDn8b7

I might add that Pelley tends to be more conservative, but I’m glad he’s speaking out against the POTUS has a total disregard for truth telling.

humphrey

A perfect intro to this 60 minutes report.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/325868-60-minutes-tracks-how-fake-news-spreads

Amid a resurgent focus on the “Pizzagate” incident that prompted a discussion on “fake news” in the election cycle, “60 Minutes” reported Sunday on how such stories are spread.

In December, a man opened fire in a Washington, D.C., pizza parlor after reading that it was the site of a child sex-trafficking ring connection to Hillary Clinton. On Friday, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones apologized to the owner.

Comet Ping-Pong’s James Alefantis told “60 Minutes” that the drama started late last year, with threatening messages on social media.

“People saying that they wanted to see my guts cut out and spill on the floor of my restaurant. One person said that they prayed that someone would come and kill everyone inside. And it was terrifying moments,” he told Scott Pelley.
