32 hours in Iowa: Sanders packs schedule during mid-impeachment dash

Here’s how the weekend unfolded (all times ET):
Saturday, 10 a.m. — Sanders arrived on Capitol Hill relatively late, skipping his usual stop at his office to go straight to the Capitol. Asked by reporters about that morning’s NYT/Siena Iowa poll that showed him with a relatively substantial lead over former Vice President Joe Biden, he said there was more work to do.
“I’m feeling good but we take nothing for granted. We have a very strong volunteer network. We’re going to be knocking on doors. As soon as the session is ended, I’m going to be on a plane going to Iowa,” Sanders said. “Gonna work as hard as we can.”
Saturday, 12:30 p.m. — With impeachment proceedings Saturday wrapping up earlier than expected, Sanders departed the Capitol, where he was asked by ABC News if he was happy to be heading to Iowa.
“Very,” Sanders replied.
Saturday, 12:55 p.m. — Sanders arrives at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and boards his charter flight to Ames, Iowa.
Saturday, 3:05 p.m. — The flight lands in Ames, where Sanders and his team decide, due to the speed with which they made it to Iowa, they can make an event about 40 minutes away in Marshalltown that was originally supposed to feature only filmmaker Michael Moore and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., two of the campaign’s more high-profile surrogates.
Saturday, 6:50 p.m. — Sanders takes the microphone in Marshalltown to a smaller-than-usual crowd, given that the campaign only announced his attendance an hour earlier. There, he deviates from his stump remarks to deliver a personalized message, applauding Iowans for the seriousness with which they take their caucus responsibilities.
“I don’t have to tell you this because I’ve been all over this state, and I know how seriously the people of Iowa accept their responsibility of being the first state to vote,” he said. “I know that, and I know that there are people in this room tonight who have probably gone to other meetings to hear from other candidates, and that is exactly the right thing to do.”
Saturday, 9:24 p.m. — More than 1,200 people have arrived at the Ames Auditorium, which seats less than 900, so more than 400 people, according to the campaign, have spilled into an overflow room, which Sanders swings by and addresses for a few minutes before the main event.

Saturday, 9:59 p.m. — After a musical performance by Grammy award-winning rock group Portugal. The Man and introductions by Moore and Ocasio-Cortez, Sanders delivers a closing argument centered around electability — a trait typically associated with the race’s moderates.
“If you think it is absolutely imperative to defeat Donald Trump, take a look at what our campaign is about,” he says, adding, “All these candidates are my friends and I’ve known them for years, they’re good people. Saturday overnight — Sanders and campaign staff retire to a hotel in Ankeny, Iowa
Sunday. 11:25 a.m. – Though it was not on his public schedule, Sanders starts his day by attending a canvass launch event at his Ankeny field office where he thanks volunteers for their work and emphasizes the importance of face-to-face interactions vs. television and radio advertisements. He notes, however, that he happened to catch one of his commercials earlier in the morning and thought it was “pretty good.”
Sunday, 12:59 p.m. – The senator follows Moore and Ocasio-Cortez again and mostly sticks to his stump speech, except for a quick moment when he responds to Biden, who expressed doubt Friday about the feasibility of components of Sanders’ Green New Deal.
“Now, I have been criticized roundly by a whole lot of folks, including one of my opponents, for the sweeping proposal on climate change that I introduced,” Sanders said. “And we have introduced the most sweeping, comprehensive climate change proposal ever introduced by a candidate for federal office. It is based on the principles of the Green New Deal.”
“Now, my good friend Joe Biden has recently said, and I quote, ‘not a single, solitary scientist’ end of quote, agrees with my plan,” he continued. “Well, Joe, you’re wrong. Many leading scientists agree with our plan. And in a few days we’re going to have a long list of scientists who agree with our plan because the scientists understand that we have a crisis. And that we need bold and aggressive action, and we need it now.”
In a rare move, Sanders also acknowledges some of the polling that has come out Sunday morning. But instead of focusing on the ABC News/Washington Post poll that shows strong national gains for his campaign, or the CNN/UNH poll that gives him a sizable New Hampshire lead, he hones in on a CBS poll where he and Biden are neck-and-neck in Iowa:
“You will be the first state voting in the 2020 election cycle. So what happens here is enormously important. It is enormously important,” the senator said. “So I am here this afternoon to very humbly ask for your support. Today, there was a poll that came out, which had us, leading by all of 1 point. So this is going to be a very close election, my opponents are working very hard to try to win it.”
Sunday, 3:33 p.m. – Sanders attends another unpublicized canvass launch at his Fort Dodge office, again speaking briefly, but also turning the microphone over to his Iowa state director, who announced that in the 36 hours prior, the campaign knocked over 102,000 doors in Iowa.
Sunday, 5:43 p.m. – The senator launches into his stump speech at the King’s Pointe Resort in Storm Lake, where a crowd of a few hundred listen as he references some of the uncertainty that continues to swirl around the impeachment trial schedule, saying he’s not sure he’ll be back next Saturday, but “certainly hopes to be back here for a victory celebration” on caucus night.
Sunday, 9:17 p.m. – Another Portugal. The Man set and Moore and Ocasio-Cortez help to draw a 1,100-person crowd to the Sioux City Convention Center for the final event of the trip, where Sanders shares instructions with the crowd for how to help push his campaign across the goal line.
“Say ‘hello’ to your neighbor, your coworker, your friend and say, ‘You know what, this is why I’m supporting Bernie Sanders, ask me any question that you want, let’s discuss what’s going on in America, let’s discuss where we have got to go from the here, and don’t complain come out and vote on caucus night,” he said.
At his most energized moment of the trip, Sanders touted the fact that his various rivals were beginning to notice the strength of his campaign.
“Suddenly, Donald Trump is talking about our campaign. Suddenly the Republican National Committee is tweeting about our campaign,” he said. “Suddenly we have the Democratic establishment very nervous about this campaign. We’ve got, we’ve got the insurance companies nervous. We’ve got the drug companies nervous. We’ve got the fossil fuel industry nervous. We’ve got the military industrial complex nervous. We got the prison industrial complex nervous.”
“They’re starting to think, ‘Could this really happen?'” he continued. “‘Could there really be a political movement in America, where it brings together blacks and whites, and Latinos and Asian-Americans and Native Americans, gay and straight, to stand up as working class people fighting for change?'”
“We are their worst nightmare. This is their ‘Nightmare on Elm Street,'” Sanders states, to thunderous cheers.

This Week, We Find Out if the Media Can Destroy Bernie Sanders

Welcome to Bernie Hate Week. The Iowa caucuses are exactly one week away, and despite a month of fairly torrid anti-Bernie rhetoric—highlighted by, but certainly not limited to, Elizabeth Warren’s claim that he told her in 2018 that a woman couldn’t win the presidency, which led to a post-debate tussle—the polls are more favorable than ever. The last poll to come out, from Emerson, had him leading Biden by nine points, and he’s the leader in three of the last four polls. Nationally, he appears to be finally making a dent in Biden’s previously unshakeable lead. The caucus format is tough for him because of its public nature and the bizarre manner in which delegates are counted, but he nearly pulled off a stunner against Hillary Clinton in 2016, and all the ingredients are there for him to launch his second bid with a big victory in Iowa.
That possibility is anathema not just to supporters of the other candidates, but to corporate media that has long opposed Sanders. Before the Iowa caucuses in 2016, we got the famous 16 negative stories in 16 hours from the Washington Post, which was the most intense of the many anti-Sanders content coming from the corporate media wing that included newspapers, digital outlets, and cable news. And yet even though he had a chance to win Iowa last time, Hillary Clinton had a far greater advantage throughout the greater primary than anyone can claim this time, which means he has a much better shot to win. Considering that, this week should be more rabid by far.
The attacks on Sanders typically avoid policy—a losing battle, since his policies tend to be embraced by primary voters—and come instead in a few broad categories:
1. He’s not electable.
2. He’s sexist.
3. He may not be sexist, but his supporters are sexist, especially online.
In national polls pitting the Democrats against Trump, Bernie is faring just fine, so the first argument hasn’t been as high-volume as we’ve seen in the past. But nos. 2 and 3 are where the media and Sanders’ opponents tend to focus the bulk of their energy. (He’s lucky he’s Jewish, so they can’t run the anti-Semitic playbook that seemed to work so well for corporate British media in hindering the influence of Jeremy Corbyn.) The Warren incident aimed in that direction, but was probably doomed to fail because it devolved into a he-said she-said situation, and because of how cynical the timing looked—the fact that this “news” from 2018 came out just as Warren’s campaign was lagging behind gave the appearance of a staged hit.
Now, though, the tactics are about to hit a fever pitch. Monday morning, the Times ran a story on that old familiar phenomenon, the “Bernie Bro.” It’s an easy sell for mainstream outlets to run these types of pieces, because Sanders has a massive Internet following and they don’t take kindly to bad-faith criticisms of their candidate. Many pundits or writers employed by these outlets have engaged before, and they don’t like being challenged, which is why most interactions tend to happen like this:

When the person involved in the fight is a woman, claims of sexism usually follow, and indeed, sometimes the claims are valid. The problem is that literally every campaign has dirtbag supporters, they all do the same ugly things, and Sanders is the only candidate asked to take responsibility for every anonymous account who tweets something objectionable. It’s a ridiculous standard for anyone, and it happens exclusively with Sanders partly because his following is so much larger than any other candidate except Trump, but also because the existence of a true progressive in the race is threatening to corporate media models that are used to exerting a certain amount of control over the process. In some ways, that’s the crux of this race—it’s a referendum on how much power major papers, cable news, and their ilk actually wield in America. Trump undermined them, in a way, but his election also led to big profits as more people became politically aware after his election, leading to more subscriptions, higher TV ratings, and etc. If Sanders wins, it’s a very different kind of statement that is more like a refutation—a new reality in which the most vociferous attacks can’t budge a skeptical electorate. In that sense, defeating Sanders is more critical for them from an economic perspective than defeating Trump could ever be.

Frum also references the Joe Rogan endorsement, which has been a favorite target of the anti-Sanders segment in the past week. Rogan has made statements in the past that most leftists would find offensive, especially about transgender women, but the fact is that he came around to support the Democratic candidate with the most inclusive, forward-thinking transgender platform of the primary. And it happened without Sanders conceding one inch of policy ground, which is what politics is supposed to be about…not to mention the fact that Rogan’s enormous platform means he’ll carry others with him. If this allegedly anti-Trans demographic is willing to support a candidate who is avowedly the opposite, how and why is this a bad thing?
The concept of the Bernie Bro, and the idea that there is sexism and racism at the heart of Sanders’ campaign, all contribute to the erasure of the incredibly diverse coalition that makes up his supporter base. And I’m not just talking about the people he’s hired—I’m talking about the voters. The majority of Sanders supporters are women, he’s the preferred candidate of Latino voters, and he leads all candidates, including Joe Biden, among black voters under age 40.
There is a movement happening, and it behooves corporate media to nip the movement in the bud. This week will be the test case that determines what comes next—do they have the strength to knock a candidate out of the lead and submarine his campaign, or is the movement strong enough to take the blows and win anyway?

Sanders calls for movement to reject hate and division on Auschwitz anniversary

Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau on Monday by calling on Americans to reject hate and division.
“Today, we must remember the lessons of those dark days, and acknowledge the danger of allowing hate to fester,” Sanders, who is Jewish, said in a statement released by his campaign.
“We know that even the most advanced societies can succumb to barbarism. We know how darkness can overtake our world,” he continued, adding that Americans must not forget “the human capacity to stand up against hatred.”
Sanders went on to hit President Trump in the statement, saying the president encourages white nationalism “along with a corresponding rise of anti-Semitic bigotry and violence right here in America.”
“So in my view, there is nothing more important than building a movement to reject hate, fear, and division,” he added. “Today we join all our brothers and sisters to reject intolerance and bigotry and create a more just and peaceful world.”
Sanders has raised red flags about white nationalism in the U.S., often invoking his own family’s ties to the Holocaust in Poland.
“I’m Jewish, my family came from Poland. My father’s whole family was wiped out by Hitler and his white nationalism,” Sanders said at the Young Leader’s Conference last August in Atlanta. “Too many people have fought over the years – too many people have died against racism – to allow it to resurface and flourish in America.”

Bernie Sanders has moved to the lead in New Hampshire in a poll that shows a dramatic shake-up in the race, a new Franklin Pierce, Boston Herald, NBC 10 poll shows.

Sanders has taken the lead in the poll of “likely” New Hampshire voters with 29% followed by Joe Biden at 22% and Elizabeth Warren with 16% and Pete Buttigieg with 10%.

Just two weeks ago, the previous FPU, Herald, NBC10 poll, had Biden in the lead at 26% with Sanders at 22% and Warren at 18% and Buttigieg at 7%.

Today’s new poll surveyed 407 “likely” Democratic Granite State primary voters. The first-in-the-nation primary is set for Feb. 11. The margin of error in the Democratic race is 4.9%.

The situation I’ve been describing is, I suspect, far more basic and human than that and—my guess—it has to do with time. The time all of us are generally plunged into is, naturally enough, human time, which has a certain obvious immediacy for us—the immediacy, you might say, of everyday life. In human time, for instance, an autocratic-minded showman like Donald Trump can rise to the presidency, be impeached, and fall, or be impeached, stay in office, and pass on his “legacy” to his children until something new comes along to make its mark, fail or end in its own fashion, and go the way of… well, of all of us. That’s human history, again and again.
And then there’s the time-scape of global warming, which exists on a scale hard for us mortals to truly take in. After all, whatever Donald Trump might do won’t last long, not really—with two possible exceptions: the use of nuclear weapons in an apocalyptic fashion or the help he’s offering fossil-fuel companies in putting yet more greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere, while working to limit the development of alternative energy, both of which will only make the climate crisis to come yet more severe.

The real question is: When will climate change truly enter human time—when, that is, will the two time scales intersect in a way that clicks? Perhaps (but just perhaps) we’re finally seeing the beginning of an answer to that question for which you would, I suspect, have to thank two phenomena: Greta Thunberg and Australia’s fires.
In August 2018, all alone, the 15-year-old Thunberg began a Friday school strike in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm to make a point: that however all-encompassing the present human moment might seem, she understood in a way that mattered how her future and that of her peers was being stolen by the adults in charge of this planet and the climate crisis they were continuing to feed. The movement of the young she sparked, one that’s still sparking, was a living, breathing version of those two times intersecting. In other words, she somehow grasped and transmitted in a compelling way how a future crisis of staggering proportions was being nailed in place in human time, right at that very moment.

The Facts Are Just the Facts’: Sanders Campaign Hits Back After Biden Claims He—Not Bernie—Has Consistently Protected Social Security

Sen. Bernie Sanders’s presidential campaign took aim at primary election opponent former Vice President Joe Biden Monday after Biden claimed Sanders hasn’t been “consistent” in his efforts to protect and raise Social Security benefits.
A reporter with local New Hampshire news station WMUR challenged Biden on-air about his claim that the Sanders campaign had misinformed the public about the former vice president’s attacks on Social Security with a “doctored” video last week.
Biden told the reporter he had advocated for cuts “20 years ago” and said Sanders “hasn’t been consistent on Social Security,” without elaborating on the Vermont senator’s alleged inconsistencies, before explaining his current plan for the benefits which millions of retired Americans rely on for at least 90% of their income.

“The facts are indisputable: Biden repeatedly pushed to freeze Social Security funding, cut Social Security benefits and raise the Social Security eligibility age—and he bragged about it on the floor of the U.S. Senate,” countered Faiz Shakir, Sanders’s campaign manager, in a press statement.
The WMUR reporter suggested that Biden’s claims of consistency on Social Security don’t hold up, considering he acknowledged advocating in the 1990s for a freeze on cost-of-living adjustments for the program, and now claims he wouldn’t support such a freeze.
Biden tried to use the interview as an attempt to “distort his own decades-long effort to cut Social Security,” the Sanders campaign said.
Last week, Bloomberg News published an article saying Sanders also pushed for Social Security “adjustments” as Biden and the Republican Party did, suggesting he meant benefits should be cut.
“He may be borrowing a word but he’s speaking a totally different language,” Sanders’s communications director, Mike Casca, told Bloomberg.
On Monday, Sanders’s speechwriter, David Sirota, posted a 2007 “Meet the Press” interview in which Biden defended his earlier deal with Republicans including former Kansas Sen. Bob Dole, in which Biden promised GOP leaders he would defend them from attacks on their proposals to cut Social Security and Medicare funding, and vice versa.
Raising the retirement age to cut Social Security “absolutely” had to be considered, Biden told NBC journalist Tim Russert at the time.
“This wasn’t ’20 years ago,'” Sirota tweeted. “This was 2007.”
