Glenn Greenwald leaves The Intercept

Naked Capitalism has a pro Greenwald piece

https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2020/10/glenn-greenwald-resigns-from-the-intercept-over-censorship-of-article-on-hunter-and-joe-biden.html

Marcy Wheeler, emptywheel, has been carrying on a family feud attack on Greenwald for some time. I read her twitter feed but don’t subscribe because she has too many tweets

Or might be best to let the controversy die out and continue to follow both of them. They do good work.

Marcy is like I. F. Stone who does a deep dive on documents, especially legal documents and exposes the ongoing corruption.

Fake, fabricated identity, and AI face generator 🤣🤣🤣

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/security/how-fake-persona-laid-groundwork-hunter-biden-conspiracy-deluge-n1245387

One month before a purported leak of files from Hunter Biden’s laptop, a fake “intelligence” document about him went viral on the right-wing internet, asserting an elaborate conspiracy theory involving former Vice President Joe Biden’s son and business in China.

The document, a 64-page composition that was later disseminated by close associates of President Donald Trump, appears to be the work of a fake “intelligence firm” called Typhoon Investigations, according to researchers and public documents.

The author of the document, a self-identified Swiss security analyst named Martin Aspen, is a fabricated identity, according to analysis by disinformation researchers, who also concluded that Aspen’s profile picture was created with an artificial intelligence face generator. The intelligence firm that Aspen lists as his previous employer said that no one by that name had ever worked for the company and that no one by that name lives in Switzerland, according to public records and social media searches.

One of the original posters of the document, a blogger and professor named Christopher Balding, took credit for writing parts of it when asked about it and said Aspen does not exist.

The document and its spread have become part of a wider effort to smear Hunter Biden and weaken Joe Biden’s presidential campaign, which moved from the fringes of the internet to more mainstream conservative news outlets.

An unverified leak of documents — including salacious pictures from what President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and a Delaware Apple repair store owner claimed to be Hunter Biden’s hard drive — were published in the New York Post on Oct. 14. Associates close to Trump, including Giuliani and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, have promised more blockbuster leaks and secrets, which have yet to materialize.

The fake intelligence document, however, preceded the leak by months, and it helped lay the groundwork among right-wing media for what would become a failed October surprise: a viral pile-on of conspiracy theories about Hunter Biden.

The email exchanges make it fairly clear that Intercept editors were holding Greenwald’s analysis of the allegations against Joe Biden and his family to a much higher evidentiary standard than they hold any journalist who wants to criticize Trump or promote flimsy Russia conspiracy theories on the platform, and generally creating pressure and inertia to remove anything in the article that might hurt Biden’s election chances. Journalist Matt Taibbi has his own article out on Greenwald’s resignation which contains more information on the email exchanges, and which is very much worth reading.

More revealing than the emails is the information which Greenwald shares in his Substack article about his resignation, saying The Intercept has been deliberately opaque about those who were responsible for the Reality Winner debacle and the actions they took which led to her arrest when leaking NSA documents to the outlet. Greenwald claims editors rushed the publication of the leaks “because they was eager to prove to mainstream media outlets and prominent liberals that The Intercept was willing to get on board the Russiagate train,” and says their silence has allowed the blame to fall on him for Winner’s imprisonment despite his having nothing to do with the ordeal.

Greenwald also reveals that The Intercept refused to report on the daily proceedings of the Julian Assange extradition hearing “because the freelance reporter doing an outstanding job was politically distasteful”. It’s unclear exactly what was meant by this; Greenwald has praised the excellent Assange trial coverage by Shadowproof’s Kevin Gosztola and Richard Medhurst now of Press TV in the past, both of whom say they don’t at this time know who he was referring to. Regardless of what he meant, refusal of a media outlet whose motto is “Fearless, adversarial journalism” to cover the single most important journalistic freedom case in the world is outrageous on its face.

I’m glad Caitlin brought in Reality Winner and Assange. Looks like this has been brewing for a while, and while Glenn could have maybe meditated first, i get why he was at a boiling point.

There’s more, of course. Also a link to Matt’s article, if you haven’t read that, Don.

Marci lost me when she started with the Russia, Russia, Russia.

polarbear4

These accusations are fully in line with the smears you can read from the blue-checkmarked commentariat by typing in Greenwald’s name into the Twitter search bar on every given day. Establishment spinmeisters have been painting Greenwald as a closet Trump supporter who stumbled his way into useful idiocy for the Kremlin ever since the award-winning journalist began questioning the establishment Russia narrative, and this statement is plainly both informed by and designed to appeal to acolytes of that smear campaign.

Contrary to its claims of adhering to its “journalistic roots”, The Intercept has in fact been going down the tubes for as long as I’ve been at this commentary gig. Its coverage on Syria has been blatant security state stenography, it’s published hit pieces on Assange, its sources keep getting arrested, and it has been promoting Russiagate with all the fervor of any garden variety corporate liberal rag. So the fact that it has joined with the freakishly unified narrative management campaign on the Hunter Biden story, and is now citing unsubstantiated assertions by US spooks to do so, is not terribly surprising.

jcitybone

Well Caitlyn never had me. I don’t believe Russia was the cause of Clinton’s loss, but I think completely dIsregarding Russian interference is wrong.

Anyway, Glenn is now free to write whatever he wants unburdened by any editorial oversight and The Intercept is free to pursue more fact-based, careful, investigative journalism. Added benefit: Glenn’s huge salary is off the books. I actually just subscribed.

polarbear4

“The Intercept is free to pursue more fact-based, careful, investigative journalism.” or not.

Definitely better than Glenn and Rudy’s hallucinations

The folks at Rising had Greenwald on this morning:

polarbear4

this is not a case where anyone has to figure out who’s telling the truth…but rather getting the materials out there and pointing out that it’s a story that deserves attention.

Thanks–lots of info. So glad he got this opportunity.

orlbucfan

“let the controversy die out and continue to follow both of them.”
——————————————————
I agree wholeheartedly, Don. David Sirota, Matt Taibbi and now Greenwald are with Substack from what I’ve read. I follow all of them. I also respect Marcy Wheeler.

wi62

Like any other articles now a days, extra research by the person reading it is needed to verify before believing it. Its like a sports reporter they’ll throw anything out their on an athlete or a trade or rumor just to say they were first to report it. This type of reporting damages the credibility of the good reporters out their.

polarbear4

Glenn is not saying he has everything down pat, but that it is an important story that is being sidelined using Russia! and Trump!

The Hunter Byedone news has been reported since 2016. Byedone had a worthless son he propped up by giving him this job in UKraine. In return, Ukraine got PBO’s ear. ByeDone’s kid was worthless as tits on a boar hog, had a major drug habit and indulged it. Plus, plenty of paid sex. It stinks to high heaven but where are laws broken?

Good morning to our leader and all the rest of us. NYC is closing in on the biblical 40 days and 40 nights of rain. And yet, New Yorkers are standing in long lines to vote.

Here’s today’s numbers: Worth a cheer is that 82 Million Early Votes are in. Also worthy of, if not a cheer then a sigh of relief, FOUR MORE DAYS. F-O-U-R!!!! In a hint of what the WH is thinking, President Trump has canceled the Election Night Victory Party scheduled for his DC hotel. AS noted yesterday Trump campaign has pulled his Florida ads.

91,720 New Covid cases were reported in the USA for Thursday and along with that jawdropping statistic, we had 1004 deaths.

I feel cautiously optimistic this morning but I expect that to change somewhat since I’ll be reading what Michael Moore says in the clip down thread.

The NY Times COVID tracker said there were 90,728 new cases yesterday, breaking the record and the first time over 90,000

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/10/30/trump-jr-coronavirus-deaths-almost-nothing/?utm_campaign=wp_main&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_source=reddit.com

Donald Trump Jr. declared on Thursday night that coronavirus deaths had dropped to “almost nothing,” questioning the seriousness of the pandemic on a record-breaking day for new cases in which more than 1,000 Americans died of the virus.

Speaking to Fox News host Laura Ingraham, Trump Jr. pointed to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that he suggested show a declining coronavirus death rate.

“I went through the CDC data, because I kept hearing about new infections, but I was like, ‘Why aren’t they talking about this?’ ” Trump Jr. said. “Oh, because the number is almost nothing. Because we’ve gotten control of this thing, we understand how it works. They have the therapeutics to be able to deal with this.”

While medical advances and less-crowded hospitals appear to have reduced the death rate from the early days of the pandemic, scientists warn it’s not clear whether that’s a long-term trend, The Washington Post reported. As cases surge across the United States, fatalities are often a lagging data point for CDC researchers, and reports can be incomplete in capturing the actual rate at which people are dying from the virus and its complications.

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2020/10/30/929239481/internal-documents-reveal-covid-19-hospitalization-data-the-government-keeps-hid?utm_source=npr_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20201030&utm_term=4929639&utm_campaign=breaking-news&utm_id=8555028&orgid=286

As coronavirus cases rise swiftly around the country, surpassing both the spring and summer surges, health officials brace for a coming wave of hospitalizations and deaths. Knowing which hospitals in which communities are reaching capacity could be key to an effective response to the growing crisis. That information is gathered by the federal government — but not shared openly with the public.

NPR has obtained documents that give a snapshot of data the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services collects and analyzes daily. The documents — reports sent to agency staffers — highlight trends in hospitalizations and pinpoint cities nearing full hospital capacity and facilities under stress. They paint a granular picture of the strain on hospitals across the country that could help local citizens decide when to take extra precautions against COVID-19.

Withholding this information from the public and the research community is a missed opportunity to help prevent outbreaks and even save lives, say public health and data experts who reviewed the documents for NPR.

“At this point, I think it’s reckless. It’s endangering people,” says Ryan Panchadsaram, co-founder of the website COVID Exit Strategy and a former data official in the Obama administration. “We’re now in the third wave, and I think our only way out is really open, transparent and actionable information.”

https://thehill.com/campaign-polls/523531-nearly-60-percent-disapprove-of-trumps-big-rallies-during-pandemic-poll

Nearly 60 percent disapprove of President Trump holding rallies during the coronavirus pandemic, according to a USA TODAY/ Suffolk University poll.

In contrast, the poll found 64 percent approve of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s decision to not hold large events with audiences given the risks of the coronavirus.

Cases of COVID-19 have been spiking across the country in the last two weeks raising fears about a difficult winter. The coronavirus has been the dominant issue in the presidential campaign.

jcitybone

And that was during a period when COVID was on a relative down swing

https://www.cnn.com/2020/10/29/health/covid-trump-rallies-counties-cases/index.html

CNN investigation of 17 Trump campaign rallies finds that 14 of the host counties — 82% of them — had an increased rate of new Covid-19 cases one month after the rally.

The 17 rallies occurred between August 17 and September 26. CNN evaluated the rate of new daily cases per 100,000 residents at four weeks before the rally, on the rally date, and four weeks after the rally at the county level and at the state level.

Of the 14 host counties that had increased infection rates, eight of the counties had declining rates of infection in the month before the rally. The other six counties already had increasing rates of infection in that preceding month.

CNN’s analysis also found that in 10 counties, the new rates of infection were growing faster than the overall rate for the state.

Bruno Latour tweets that this is something that might be a break from the lockdown.

Bruno has effectively brought Art into the effort to understand what is needed to go beyond the cosmology of the West for the last 300 years or so. This cosmology has justified colonialization and resource extraction which is on the path to kill off humans. So, one would think that a different path is called for. For years I have thought about Whitehead’s comment: Mankind is not wholly dumb.”

Here is Bruno touring an art exhibit. It is a little hard to understand, but important to go through the first part to see the fragile globe. Bruno has made a big deal about the globe: the round sphere, map of globe, which you can hold in your hands. This is a view from no where. Not a view from where we reside here on land.

wi62

Maybe Covid was a subtle warning from Mother nature, When the shut downs happened the skies cleared and animal life came into the cities. The question is is mankind smart enough to get the message?

Very clever Biden ad

humphrey

It appears as if you are not very particular on which source you use in order to make a point.

https://lawandcrime.com/2020-election/biden-surrogate-forced-to-resign-from-democratic-group-due-to-doctored-bernie-sanders-video/

Biden Surrogate ‘Forced to Resign’ from Democratic Group Over Doctored Bernie Sanders Video.

A surrogate for Joe Biden‘s presidential campaign was, in her words in a group chat, “forced to resign” on Monday from Pennsylvania Young Democrats after promoting a doctored video of fellow 2020 contender Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.) and for allegedly sharing anti-Semitic tweets about him and his online supporters.

Lindy Li previously served as the treasurer for the Pennsylvania Young Democrats, a position she has since admittedly resigned.

“Biden Surrogate [Lindy Li] as forced to resign as Treasurer of the PA Young Democrats after spreading doctored video of Bernie Sanders and making antisemitic comments about him,” tweeted immigration paralegal Jamie Agustin, who broke the story on Twitter.

jcitybone

I could care less about the source here I tried to find it without using a Twitterer but could not so I used the tweet because I liked the ad. As far as I know she didn’t make the ad. So she liked it and I liked it. Big f’n deal

humphrey

That is exactly my point. Use anything that applies a wet kiss on Biden is 👌 I can hardly wait until you use Hillary or the horse’s ass as your source.😎

orlbucfan

Okay, you two, time out! Li is an asshole but the ad is clever on its own merits.

humphrey

Did you actually read my comments? I will not let such comments go without bringing attention to the source.

I read your comments, Mr. Ornery. My comment stands. Go refresh yourself with it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/29/climate/wolves-endangered-species-list.html

Gray wolves, one of the first animals shielded by the Endangered Species Act after Americans all but exterminated them in the lower 48 states, will no longer receive federal protection, officials announced Thursday.

“After more than 45 years as a listed species, the gray wolf has exceeded all conservation goals for recovery,” Interior Secretary David Bernhardt said in a statement.

Environmentalists condemned the decision as dangerously premature and vowed to take the Fish and Wildlife Service back to court, where they have successfully blocked previous attempts to strip wolves of federal protections. “Wolves just occupy a fraction of their former range,” said Jamie Rappaport Clark, president and chief executive of Defenders of Wildlife, an environmental group. “There’s so much work that needs to be done.”

The new rule will officially publish on Tuesday and become effective 60 days after that. Then, states and tribes will assume control of the nation’s wolves, except for a subspecies called the Mexican wolf that remains under federal protection.

Thursday’s decision came despite significant concerns raised by scientists who performed the independent review that is required before the Fish and Wildlife Service can delist a species. Four out of the five researchers charged with reviewing the proposal raised substantive concerns.

“I thought it was critically flawed,” said Carlos Carroll, an independent biologist with the Klamath Center for Conservation Research who said the Fish and Wildlife Service proposal, which is based on the consensus that wolves now face a low risk of extinction, ignored the importance of genetic variation in species.

That variation will be critical to allowing the animals to adapt to future threats like climate change, Dr. Carroll said, and is essential for their long-term survival. “That is the building block of their ability to persist,” he said.

orlbucfan

The folks helping protect the wolves need to go into high gear until the maggot and supporters are obliterated. It is that brutally simple!

https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvxxzw/trumps-racist-hail-mary-to-white-voters-isnt-working?utm_source=reddit.com

Yet while Trump is far from the first American president to attempt to use racial divisions to campaign advantage, he’s unique among recent major party presidential nominees in his brazenness, according to Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public policy at Princeton University.

“He is upping the ante, and he is saying the silent part out loud, which matters,” Zelizer recently told NPR. “By saying it out loud, he grants it more legitimacy, and he gives it presidential weight in a way that’s different.”

From the Seth Myers interview

https://www.newsweek.com/bernie-sanders-says-democratic-party-has-become-party-coastal-elites-1543532

Bernie Sanders, the independent senator from Vermont, criticized the Democratic Party on Thursday, claiming it has become a “party of coastal elites.”

Sanders made the comments while appearing on Late Night With Seth Myers. The host acknowledged that the Democratic Party has gotten away from America’s working class over the years, to which Sanders nodded his head in agreement.

If Democratic nominee Joe Biden wins the November 3 election, Myers then asked, what should Biden do to “bring the Democratic Party back to serving the working people in this country?”

“I think it is fair to say that in many ways the Democratic Party has become a party of the coastal elites, folks who have a lot of money, upper-middle-class people who are good people, who believe in social justice in many respects,” Sanders responded. “But I think for many, many years the Democratic Party has not paid the kind of attention to working-class needs that they should’ve.”

Sanders, who has caucused with the Democratic Party for most of his congressional career, cited the donors and businesses that often fund campaigns as part of the reason for this apparent shift in the party’s demographics.

The senator stressed that Democrats in Congress need to “start bursting out of the blocs in an effort to protect working people.” He said that he is working on a 100-day program to help the party achieve just that, particularly if it gains control over the Senate.

Those protections, Sanders said, include passing a “very substantive” coronavirus relief bill similar to the one Congress passed in March. The package should extend the weekly $600 payments that supplemented state unemployment benefits, as well as the one-time $1,200 payment to working families and individuals, he said. The legislation should provide health care to anyone who might’ve lost it and financial aid to cities and towns so they don’t have to lay off workers, Sanders said.

The senator also advocated raising the minimum wage to at least $15 per hour, making it easier for workers to join unions and ensuring that women receive equal pay for doing equal work, compared with their male counterparts.
