Scientists engineered plastic-eating ‘super-enzymes’ that can break down bottles in days

More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually worldwide, and most plastics take centuries to break down.
A new study describes a “super-enzyme” engineered using proteins derived from plastic-eating bacteria. It can recycle a common type of plastic in days.
Such enzymes could help address the growing problem of plastic pollution.

More than 300 million tons of plastic are produced annually worldwide. Most take hundreds of years to break down, and even then, they just splinter into tiny microplastic pieces that will likely never biodegrade. Microplastics make it into the food we eat and show up in our poop.
But new types of engineered enzymes, created from plastic-eating bacteria, appear able to break down plastics in a matter of days.
These “super-enzymes” were made by researchers at the Center for Enzyme Innovation in the UK and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado. They break down a type of common plastic known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) — used in single-use bottles as well as clothing and carpets — into its chemical building blocks.
Used at scale, they could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels (which are needed to produce new plastic), instead allowing manufacturers to reuse the same plastics over and over.

this is too important not to use it! I love this, but I’ve also seen too much sci-fi and I always have this little fear that these little things are going to get out of control and start eating other things… 😂😱😂

same here PB same here.

Same here polarbear!

My first reaction was, ‘Encouraging!’, then I thought a bit more about these super-enzymes and wondered what else they might break down.

I used to work in a lab and one day my co-worker, was working with chloroform and she spilled a few drops and her pantyhose melted. Lots of big holes all over her pantyhouse instantly-she looked like something out of a punk video. I think even the fumes were melting some of the nylon.

Heh…
Mutant 59: The Plastic Eaters

A book I enjoyed in high school. The organism breaks down plastic materials in wiring insulation, seals and other widespread applications with disastrous effects.

He’s up in 2022? We can’t get him out fast enough.

Thiers a good chance since they (R’S ) cant gerrymander that election

Russ Feingold should have had that seat in 2016 and many polls had him leading, but uninspiring candidates at the top of the ticket depressed turnout.

Hillary Clinton could not be bothered to return there.

The debate was a disaster for Trump. And this was before Trump Covid. Also they are predicting a super high turnout.

orlbucfan

I have been screeching from the bully pulpit about the absolute necessity of a record high turnout to defeat these FRightwingnut SOBs and their $$$ allies/bosses. If it beats the 1964 turnout, they are TOAST!

wi62

If a candidate has a 50% + lead in the polls going in they rarely lose.

https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/519516-almost-three-quarters-of-americans-think-trump-did-not-take-necessary

Almost three-quarters of American adults say President Trump did not take the risk of contracting COVID-19 seriously, according to a poll released Sunday.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll showed 72 percent of adults said the president did not take “the appropriate precautions when it came to his personal health.” The same percentage of people also said Trump did not take the “risk of contracting the virus seriously enough.”

Among Republicans, 43 percent said Trump didn’t take the appropriate precautions nor the risk of catching the virus seriously enough. For Democrats, 94 percent said he didn’t take needed precautions, and 95 percent said he wasn’t serious enough about possibly contracting COVID-19.

The poll was conducted in the two days after Trump’s announcement early Friday morning that he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for COVID-19.

I guess Trumpcorp would have to die for more than 43% of R’s to agree with that statement
