Now that the dem party defeated a monster, we can continue to try and figure out what important Bernie work has done and continues to do.

Bernie engaged people in the practice of democracy.

Bernie provided a language of politics. Bernie engaged his supporters.

What I did below was to take the final paragraph from an article which describes a famous intellectual when he worked as an elementary school teacher and prepared a dictionary for them. I made two changes in the paragraph.

For the name of the famous person, I substituted Bernie

For the word student, I substituted supporter.

Bernie carefully prepared his supporters to enter into the community of language as active participants. He emphasized learning through direct experience, taking responsibility, and honing their judgment in creating and discerning meaning. Instead of having supporters simply memorize words and their usage as though they were akin to multiplication tables, Bernie insisted that supporters needed to build up their familiarity and make correct inferences about the relationships between words and meanings for themselves. He connected this pedagogic need to the volume he published: “Only a word book makes it possible to hold the supporter responsible…because it provides them with a reliable tool for finding and correcting their mistakes…It is absolutely necessary that the supporter can correct their own mistakes. They should feel confident that they are the only author of their work and they alone ought to be responsible for it.” One’s authorship in using language and participating in the wider play of meaning in a community thus comes from the learned responsibility and judgment that experience with a language and its culturally contextual meanings furnish.

Later I will post the answer

How Ludwig Wittgenstein came to write a dictionary for elementary school students.

Sigh. In a perfect world that would have been Bernie’s acceptance speech as POTUS-elect. 😞

OK. Here are a couple of hints. He lived in the 20 th century.

And (I took out his name)

His teacher, Bertrand Russell, described …. as

perhaps the most perfect example I have ever known of genius as traditionally conceived;

passionate,
profound,
intense,
and dominating

agree — Bernie fits well with the quotation for Wittgenstein in the modified quotation above

I have no idea 😀 it was fun give it some thought though.

And the answer is Wittgenstein

Guard Against Confusion
How Ludwig Wittgenstein came to write a dictionary for elementary school students.

taught in small villiages to elementary school students between 1920 and 1925

Throughout 1925, he worked on putting together a small dictionary of German words for his students, which would become known as the Wörterbuch für Volksschulen (Dictionary for Elementary Schools). It was published by a Viennese press in the fall of 1926. This was a few months after a harrowing corporal punishment incident in which Wittgenstein struck a student, causing the student to collapse. He abruptly abandoned his teaching career and moved back to Vienna. The dictionary Wittgenstein produced would become the second of only two works that was published in his lifetime. The original volume of forty-two pages and nearly six thousand word entries was meant to fill a pedagogic need for his students. The two dictionaries available at the time were not up to the task: “One was too big and too expensive to be used by children…The other was too small and badly put together, containing many foreign words which the children were unlikely ever to use, and omitting many words commonly misspelt by children.”

However, as one of the most eminent philosophical thinkers of the twentieth century, he could not leave behind his insatiable fascination with language and meaning in his new career. Beyond practical needs, Wittgenstein’s keen interest in how his students were learning the use of words and their spelling becomes clear through his justifications and explanations provided in the dictionary’s preface. His meticulous choices and attention to detail in how to construct the book helped to “guard [the student] against confusions in the best way possible.” How does a young student learn a new word, idea, or concept when previously they were unable to use it themselves? An adult can often rely on prior concepts in relation to which a new concept makes sense, but a child learning a word or concept for the first time often does not have such prior understanding to bring to bear on a new idea. Instead, a child needs to practice and have the chance to use the word in new contexts. This lesson stuck with Wittgenstein many years later, when he wrote that “the usefulness of this sign must emerge from experience.” And the dictionary was a means for his students to gain just that.

In WWI he was a scout in the army. That means that he was forward of the line in the most vulnerable position. From one of the richest families in Vienna, after WWI he gave up his fortune.

from wiki

A survey among American university and college teachers ranked the Investigations as the most important book of 20th-century philosophy, standing out as

the one crossover masterpiece in twentieth-century philosophy, appealing across diverse specializations and philosophical orientations.[21]

The Investigations also ranked 54th on a list of most influential twentieth-century works in cognitive science prepared by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Cognitive Sciences.[22] However, in the words of his friend Georg Henrik von Wright, he believed that

his ideas were generally misunderstood and distorted even by those who professed to be his disciples. He doubted he would be better understood in the future. He once said he felt as though he was writing for people who would think in a different way, breathe a different air of life, from that of present-day men.[23]

I sent the reworded paragraph with Bernie in it to the poly sci prof who wrote the article. Since I did not say anything except put in the paragraph, there is probably an 80% chance she will respond. Usually with these kinds of things I put in too much and for whatever reason, the email ends up in the trash

My wife turned on MSNBC which just called it for Biden.

Earlier I sat and watched TV for less than 10 minutes and Joe, the shit Scarbough (sp) said that voters were afraid of democrats. Socialists!!! Fear them!!!

The pundits who do horse races are in heaven to have a non stop horse race that goes on and on for hours and affords them to talk about something other than the shit Trump throws over the wall.

Now that the propaganda to defeat Trump has been part, in some way, maybe what it did was to scare the shit out of people. My wife and her friends sent Lincoln Project info around, like Colbert who had a rant the other day when Trump held his unhinged press conference, and the Never Trumpers in the establishment democrats, …

There is a twitter feed up right now on the Lincoln Project. I will try my best to get my wife to understand how she has been manipulated by Republicans. This shows how weak the practices of the dem party, their collective attachments, how weak they are when subjected to hot buttons. The dems are not tied strongly to issues, but to the ebb and flow of opinion while supporting neo liberal economics, wars, American exceptionalism and slow walking response to The New Climatic Regime. That name is used to highlight the political nature of The New Climatic Regime.

Now shift to Lincoln Project. Important to put this on the table to fight it as part of the fight to move the dems to the left.

this one has an 18 min MUST WATCH takedown of the Lincoln project

here is a direct link to the 18 min youtube

(as an aside, my wife has MSNBC on and I hate them more and more and more….I can only hear enthusiastic talk, I am not hearing the words, but they are slobbering all over themselves as they call the winner of the horse race)

I think the next one is crap

there are many, many apologists and I didn’t bother to list them

Not a single progressive incumbent was voted out.

Progressive measures passed all over the country, even as centrist Democrat incumbents were defeated:
There Was Actually a Lot of Good News for the Left on Election Day

If Democrats are going to succeed in the future they will have to stop accepting the conservative framing on socialism, and embrace it to advance widely-popular changes.

excellent article

The Lincoln Project Was a Giant Grift
BY
DAVID SIROTA ANDREW PEREZ
The Lincoln Project said it would win over Republican voters from Donald Trump. Instead, Trump consolidated his base as the group burned $67 million that could’ve been spent better on real political organizing.

A group of longtime Republican operatives depicting themselves as anti-Trump stalwarts convinced liberals to give them more money for ineffective television ads and stunts than was raised by the Democratic Party’s national campaign to win state legislatures.

The result: Donald Trump won more Republican votes than he did in 2016 as Democrats again lost state legislatures in advance of redistricting that could determine control of Congress for the next decade.

Meanwhile, the GOP operatives are reportedly positioned to go from lighting liberals’ money on fire during the 2020 election to now using liberals’ money to launch a media empire that could push a new Biden administration to the right.

The GOP super PAC, called the Lincoln Project, raised at least $67 million this year from liberals who were told by one of the group’s cofounders that it would win over “independent-leaning men, those college-educated Republicans, the suburban Republican women.” The Lincoln Project was cofounded by Steve Schmidt, who was John McCain’s 2008 campaign manager and who has been publicly boasting that he led the campaigns to help George W. Bush install right-wing judges on the Supreme Court.

While the Lincoln Project’s YouTube videos lampooning Trump received millions of views and endless promotion on MSNBC, the ads proved ineffective in the group’s stated goal: As the Daily Poster first reported, Trump actually increased his share of the Republican vote in 2020 as compared to 2016, when the Lincoln Project did not exist.

and they spent no money on GA Senate Race. Lets see what they do now that the monster is gone.

I endured that Scarborough rant right there with you Don, it was awful and I told Mr. Mags, “I’m not listening to this!!” and flipped to John King on CNN going over the numbers while we finished our breakfast. It was quite clear that Biden was about to win from the trends on those late votes.

All those never-Trump republicans are going to do their best to push the Dem party even more to the right. I expect Fox to go completely off the rails, while MSNBC and CNN will be more devious with their methods.

p.s. my sister got sucked into the LP. I’m curious what those jerks will do now.
