*****Volunteer Campaign Worker Signup*****
I got this address off a Sanders’ worker’s text yesterday. I should be on the list cos of the last campaign, but you never know. I pointed that fact out to them, too. It is https://act.berniesanders.com/signup/volunteer.

T and R to the usual excellent BNR2.0 suspects!! 🙂 LD: you’re going to have to start posting at least 2X daily. This is a wonderful change from 2015. 🙂

T and R, Benny!! Posted this info over on LD’s thread. Figured it’s important enuff to repeat here. 🙂

Esquire on this hiring

As near as I can tell, CNN’s political coverage through one of the most consequential presidential elections of our time is going to be overseen by a right-wing hack who’s never committed an act of actual journalism in her life.

This is a quotation in the article from Politico

While it is common for departing administration officials to join cable news networks as analysts or contributors, it is less common for them to oversee news coverage. Isgur has no experience in news but a long history as a political operative, most recently with the Trump administration and the Fiorina campaign. Before that, she worked for the Republican National Committee and on Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, according to her LinkedIn profile. She began working with Sessions before his confirmation hearing, guiding him through the process and preparing with him in mock hearings. At CNN, Isgur will not play a role in covering the Department of Justice, according to a CNN official, who also said she will occasionally appear on air analyzing politics.

Back to Esquire article after this quotation

Among the actual journalists at CNN, this should occasion an uprising.

Will journalists revolt???? Not when it is a mickey mouse organization

No need to go to short Esquire article but here is the link for reference

Another Esquire article on this topic

https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a26423976/cnn-hire-sarah-isgur-trump-justice-department/

Love it or hate it, they just hired a political operative to run coverage of the candidate whose organization she just left, and Stelter can’t offer anything beyond these platitudes about Different Perspectives in his role as…checks notes…a media critic. The problem with Isgur is not her “viewpoint”—though her politics have, in the past, made her a Reliable Source for bad information—but the fact that she was working for Trump like ten minutes ago. But while we’re on the viewpoint discussion, will the next CNN Panel feature a Democratic Socialist now that Bernie Sanders is running and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a rising star in American politics?

US mining sites dump 50M gallons of fouled wastewater daily

Every day many millions of gallons of water loaded with arsenic, lead and other toxic metals flow from some of the most contaminated mining sites in the U.S. and into surrounding streams and ponds without being treated, The Associated Press has found.

That torrent is poisoning aquatic life and tainting drinking water sources in Montana, California, Colorado, Oklahoma and at least five other states.

The pollution is a legacy of how the mining industry was allowed to operate in the U.S. for more than a century. Companies that built mines for silver, lead, gold and other “hardrock” minerals could move on once they were no longer profitable, leaving behind tainted water that still leaks out of the mines or is cleaned up at taxpayer expense.

Using data from public records requests and independent researchers, the AP examined 43 mining sites under federal oversight, some containing dozens or even hundreds of individual mines.

The records show that at average flows, more than 50 million gallons (189 million liters) of contaminated wastewater streams daily from the sites. In many cases, it runs untreated into nearby groundwater, rivers and ponds — a roughly 20-million-gallon (76-million-liter) daily dose of pollution that could fill more than 2,000 tanker trucks.

O’Rourke won’t rule out being vice presidential candidate

Beto O’Rourke says he hasn’t ruled out being a 2020 vice presidential candidate, even as he plans to decide in the next 10 days if he’ll seek the presidency himself.

Answering a question in Spanish about possibly being another candidate’s running mate after an El Paso event Tuesday, the former Texas congressman answered in Spanish: “I’m going to consider every way to serve this country. And, yes, that will include anything.”

O’Rourke, who became a political star by nearly upsetting Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in November, said in English that he may yet opt to challenge Texas’ other Republican U.S. senator, John Cornyn, in 2020.

He says, “I’m trying to figure out how I can best serve this country” and “It may involve running for the presidency, it may involve something else.”

Beto joins Kamala in making sure everyone knows he is no socialist.

Beto O’Rourke, who is considering joining the crowded Democratic 2020 presidential field, took time to congratulate Bernie Sanders, who just joined the race on Tuesday. O’Rourke, however, added one important caveat: “I’m a capitalist,” he said, marking a clear distinction between him and Sanders, a democratic socialist.

O’Rourke might be sensitive about being lumped in with Sanders after SenatorTed Cruz of Texas repeatedly called the former congressman a socialist during his fight for Cruz’s Senate seat in the 2018 midterm elections.

I guess Booker is realizing that kumbaya is not enough

https://apnews.com/49aba91cc1c64b4eb6ec10fa13d51018

Nearing the end of a lively town hall with hundreds of voters packed into an art gallery, Cory Booker surveyed the crowd and reassured them that his sunny, unity-first presidential campaign is also tough.

“People who think my philosophy is weak, come on,” the New Jersey Democratic senator said, chiding those in his party who would try to simply “fight fire with fire.” He later described himself to reporters as “someone who’s strong, who’s tough, who will fight for a cause and fight for people but also finds common ground.”

Booker is trying to be the nation’s healer and warrior. After launching his campaign this month with a warm pitch to restore America’s “common purpose,” he’s talking more about confrontation. That approach during a recent three-day swing through the early-voting state of New Hampshire seemed to acknowledge that optimism will only carry him so far and that some Democratic voters outraged by President Donald Trump’s agenda want more.

jcitybone

Here’s a good WaPo article

https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2019/02/20/bernie-sanders-starts-off-with-bang/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.ab8a0a45333f&utm_source=reddit.com

Within moments of Bernie Sanders’s announcement he was running for president again in 2020, many stepped forward to pour cold water on his chances. He’s too radical, say some. Democrats’ leftward shift means he’s no longer radical enough, say others. He’s too ancient, say yet another group.

Not so fast. Early fundraising totals reveal a solid number of Sanders’s 2016 supporters remain committed where it matters — the wallet.

All this shouldn’t come as a surprise, yet it often seems to, at least in the Acela corridor. In a world where income inequality continues to soar, common sense says Sanders’s populist message appeals to many. Millions of Americans support Sanders’s agenda, or at least parts of it. Poll after poll after poll shows solid majorities of all ages say they want to see Medicare-for-all, a $15-an-hour minimum wage and higher taxes on the wealthiest among us.

But there is something else, too. Sanders — either deliberately or accidentally — has figured out a way to make his relatively advanced age work in his favor. In American society, we often brush off the elderly. But there remains a long-established trope, something I’ll dub the “Golden Girls” appeal after the 1980s-1990s hit television show. These people are who they are, and they remain committed to their passions. They don’t talk down to the young people, but neither do they scold, or blame them for their woes. At the same time, they don’t sugarcoat their critiques. They don’t pretend to share their taste in music, but they share something more important — they share their idealism and their belief we don’t need to settle for realism, or second best. They are, you might say, brass-tack dreamers.

Sanders, who, in an age of polished video, often turns up looking as if he forgot to brush his hair, makes zero effort to modulate his distinct New York City honk despite decades of living in Vermont and released a campaign commercial in 2016 featuring the sounds of Simon and Garfunkel, fits this profile perfectly. He tells a generation of Americans indebted by student loans that college tuition can once again be an inconsequential expense. It wouldn’t take a “magic genie,” as Klobuchar claimed Monday, just a society willing to support it. And he doesn’t just say he would like to see a $15 minimum wage. He all but shamed Amazon into raising its minimum hourly pay last year to $15 an hour, after he debuted legislation named in honor of Jeff Bezos, that would have required large companies to pay the government back if their employees still need government benefits to get by. Tulsi is a no on the GND

https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/tulsi-gabbard-i-have-concerns-over-the-green-new-deal

Democratic 2020 presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard on Wednesday questioned the viability of the “Green New Deal,” an environmental proposal in Congress being pushed by the party’s left flank.

“I have some concerns with the Green New Deal, and about some of the vagueness of the language in there, so I have not co-sponsored that resolution,” the Hawaii congresswoman told ABC’s “The View.”

Gabbard’s comments about the “Green New Deal,” a nonbinding resolution advanced in by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., reflect skepticism among usually reliably progressive Democrats. Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., on Wednesday distanced himself from the environmental framework, which calls for a reduction in carbon emissions across the U.S. by 2030 by substituting fossil fuel with green energy technology.

“To be honest with you, I’ve read it, and I’ve re-read it, and I asked Ed Markey, ‘What in the heck is this?'” Durbin said during a segment with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” “It is an aspiration. It’s a resolution aspiration.”

polarbear4

Well fergawdssake, betternot support a resolution! Shame on them both. I thought Tulsi would be on board. Of course, if we stopped out regime change wars, that would go s long way….

But she doesn’t support transitioning-fast- off fossil fuels?

Kind of unbelievable, knowing what we know.

humphrey

Also from the article.

But Gabbard, 37, touted her environmental credentials since joining the House in 2013. Prior to becoming Congress’ first Samoan-American and Hindu member, she served in local and state politics, as well as completed two overseas deployments with the Hawaii Army National Guard. In the last Congress, she introduced a bill that would require steps to be taken to ensure 100 percent of the country’s electricity in 2035 is produced via clean sources.

“I first got involved with politics as an environmentalist,” she said. “I fought very hard to make sure that everyone has clean air to breathe, clean water to drink, and I think we need to take serious action to address climate change.”

polarbear4

I don’t see why she can’t support the green new deal and still want her bill passed. Her bill sounds great. I thought the green new deal was meant to be like a public works program, which I think is a pretty great addition as long as it’s focused towards true green energy. I don’t know it seems to be getting confusing.

orlbucfan

The GND is not policy!! It’s a blueprint, a presentation of ideas. What doesn’t Tulsi grok?

orlbucfan

Gabbard already has me turned off by her Hindi stance on Islam. She’s Fundie and intolerant. This GND chickenshite position confirms it.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/02/20/kamala-harris-father-pot-1176805

Kamala Harris made headlines last week when she joked in a radio interview that of course she smoked marijuana in her younger years: “Half my family’s from Jamaica, are you kidding me?”

But the crack didn’t go over well with at least one Jamaican: Donald J. Harris, the candidate’s father.

The elder Harris sent an unsolicited statement to Kingston-based Jamaica Global Online, where the emeritus professor of economics at Stanford wrote a recent essay on his family’s history.

“My dear departed grandmothers (whose extraordinary legacy I described in a recent essay on this website), as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics,” he wrote.

Added Donald Harris: “Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

What is understood in its right dimension with the declarations of Jack Lew, former Secretary of the Treasury during the Obama Administration, who affirmed that “sanctions are the silver bullet of U.S. foreign policy because they are much more effective and are cheaper to subjugate their enemies than conventional power, because they have influence in the U.S. financial markets, the central nerve of the globalized economy. Sanctions, thus, are measures of siege to strongholds, as in the medieval era, updated to this new era of intelligent, technologized, globalized power, where each node that touches power is in service of defeating its enemies, according to Lew

Coast Guard lieutenant arrested, accused of planning domestic terrorism.

A lieutenant in the U.S. Coast Guard was arrested after the man accumulated a stash of guns and a political hit list, according to federal prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Christopher Paul Hasson, a self-proclaimed white nationalist, called for the use of violence to “establish a white homeland” and had a hit list of prominent Democrats, court records showed.

He is due in court on Thursday in Maryland to face gun and drug charges after his arrest last week.

Hasson has allegedly espoused extreme views for years. Court documents say that in June 2017, Hasson described an “interesting idea” in an email draft that included “biological attacks followed by attack on food supply.”

Hasson was first arrested on gun and drug charges, but prosecutors later filed a motion for Hasson to be detained before his trial.

“The defendant intends to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country,” they said in court. “He must be detained pending trial.”

At Hasson’s home, law enforcement officials said they found 15 firearms and at least 1,000 rounds of ammunition.

Officials also said they found a list of politicians and journalists Hasson intended to kill.

The list allegedly includes Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) were allegedly listed as “poca warren” and “Sen blumen jew,” respectively, according to court documents.

Officials said Hasson wrote a letter to a prominent American neo-Nazi in which he advocated violence and described himself as a “long time White Nationalist” and a “skinhead.”
