Congressional Republicans launched a new caucus on Friday, the Roosevelt Conservation Caucus, in response to the popularity of the progressive Green New Deal championed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

But the hypocrisy of the effort to rebrand Republicans as environmentalists is underscored by the brazen choice to name this joint House and Senate caucus after Teddy Roosevelt — a Republican president far closer in both words and deeds to modern Democratic environmentalists than any senior GOP member of Congress.

While President Donald Trump and the Republican Party are almost entirely in the pocket of fossil fuel and other industries, Roosevelt was a trust-buster who famously fought monopolies like Standard Oil, the world’s largest oil company, founded by John D. Rockefeller.

“There can be no effective control of corporations while their political activity remains,” Roosevelt said in his famous 1910 speech, “The New Nationalism.” He went on to say that “it is necessary that laws should be passed to prohibit the use of corporate funds directly or indirectly for political purposes.”

Can one imagine any modern Republican saying anything like that today without being tossed out of the party as a radical socialist? The fossil fuel industry alone spent nearly $2 billion to kill U.S. climate action since 2000, according to a study last year, with much of it going directly into Republican pockets.

Just how dumb are these people? (No answer required.) Naming a massively anti-conservationist effort after a president who is noted for his conservationist programs is beyond ludicrous. If they couldn’t remember history, it would have only taken a minute to check.

My first real job that I got as soon as I turned 16 was at a fast food joint (a franchise not in this country) and the night manager was constantly trying to lure me to his apartment to take modeling photos. Back then that kind of thing was ‘normal’.

I’m glad that it’s not as ‘normal’ now.

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Tuesday that he would not run for president, concluding his path to the Democratic nomination was narrow and he could accomplish more as a private citizen.

The decision removes from the race one of the world’s richest men, a self-described centrist who had the potential to dominate early primary spending and complicate the campaigns of other moderate candidates.

“I believe I would defeat Donald Trump in a general election,” Bloomberg, 77, said in a statement posted online Tuesday afternoon. “But I am clear-eyed about the difficulty of winning the Democratic nomination in such a crowded field.”

In place of a candidacy, Bloomberg has committed to funding a new independent political operation with the goal of preventing the reelection of President Trump, with intensive voter targeting and outreach in swing states over the next 18 months.

A player with the North Dakota State University Bisons football team wore a Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) pin on his suit jacket when visiting the White House on Monday.

Offensive guard Jack Albrecht posted several pictures of himself on Twitter from various locations in the White House with the pin clearly visible.

Albrecht is a member of the Red River Valley chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America.

A Facebook post from the local chapter featured the same images Albrecht shared on Twitter.

“Democratic socialism is for every worker on earth,” the post read. “You, me and 6-5, 275lb champion offensive linemen invited to the White House.”
