Some people are attached to the idea that the Democratic National Committee will “rig” the presidential nomination against Bernie Sanders. The meme encourages the belief that the Bernie 2020 campaign is futile because of powerful corporate Democrats. But such fatalism should be discarded.

As Frederick Douglass said, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” Of course, top Democratic Party officials don’t intend to give up control. It has to be taken from them. And the conditions for doing that are now more favorable than ever.

The effects of mobilized demands for change in the Democratic presidential nominating process have been major — not out of the goodness of any power broker’s heart, but because progressives have organized effectively ,during the last two years.

+100! 🙂

Does this sound like Bernie?

The formula for success “is finding somebody who’s been on the periphery of power and providing them a pathway to actually run in a serious way. Have them run in an authentic way, with their authentic self,” Mitchell said. “And then they’re speaking to the issues that would ultimately transform the lives of people like them and people in their communities.” The final piece of that puzzle is running “in a way that’s people-centered,” he said.

Article describes years of grass roots efforts to defeat the neo liberal agenda of Rahm Emanual. Rahm was Bill Clinton’s chief of staff. Rahm did lots of dirty deeds like land grabs of school property.

got to hand it to them

don’t mess with money or the foreign policy swamp

We’ve come to take it for granted, but if you really think about it, it’s horrendous, their support for basically killing people all over the globe and changing their governments to ones that meet our approval. Oh for the love of money and power.

One tweeter Called it taking the side of lobbyists over one of their own.

Can climate change be the issue that finally spurs heavy youth turnout?

There are too many charts to post here. But I wanted to bring your attention to the article.

Why Dianne Feinstein was wrong to dismiss child activists as political pawns

A video clip of Feinstein’s confrontation with the Sunrise Movement youth went viral (followed by full video of the exchange). While some commentators focused on the poor optics of Feinstein’s dismissiveness, others rushed to the senator’s defense. These pundits reinforced many of Feinstein’s critiques, claiming that the young activists were being used as pawns by their parents and that Feinstein’s extensive experience and knowledge of Senate procedures gave her the right to rebuff the “green” youngsters. Smearing the Sunrise youth as “jackbooted tots” trying “to bully an adult into doing their bidding,” Caitlin Flanagan of the Atlantic situated the Green New Deal within “the worlds of magic and make-believe” with which the young activists are supposedly quite familiar.

Such arguments inverted the power imbalances between the youthful Sunrise members (who cannot yet vote) and the senator. Indeed, these claims obscured two important truths regarding youth and American politics. First, thanks to parental control and a lack of voting rights, children are a marginalized, subjugated group. Second, despite popular conceptions to the contrary, childhood is inherently political. Policies implemented by adults affect young people, even though those younger than 18 have no formal say in the electoral process.

For more than a century, these realities have created two forms of child-based activism: Adults have long wielded children as political objects to advance their favorite causes, while at the same time, children themselves have agitated for change on policies that impact their lives. To simply dismiss all childhood activism as part of this first tradition ignores this second, equally rich history.

In many ways, children are at the root of every policy battle — or, as literary theorist Lee Edelman put it, “the fantasmatic beneficiary of every political intervention.” Even policy battles with minimal explicit connection to children, like the fight for reproductive rights, get framed as a fight for the future of, in Edelman’s words, “our children — for our daughters and our sons.”

To that end, adult activists have long marshaled the imagery and rhetoric of childhood to petition for their preferred policies. Modern conceptions of the “ ‘economically worthless’ but ‘emotionally priceless’ ” child took hold in the Victorian era. Through the emergent technology of flash photography and increasingly efficient means of mass communication, Progressive reformers (and specifically “muckrakers”) built popular support for their “child-saving” projects. The definition of child saving was broad enough to encompass all of the ills of modern industrial society — taxing labor, squalid living conditions, delinquency, drunkenness, vagrancy and on and on.

Reading Bruno Latour’s short, readable book again last night

He describes the line from the local to the global, the promise of globalization, the arrow of time with those behind the modernization front, those who complained that their land, culture, etc was destroyed with movements like colonization.

The point is that left and right along a line from local to global, but neither are able to deal with Gaia. They fight back and forth, but miss what has shaped politics.

The insight, the issue is not Truth, but DEPOLITIZATION. The destruction of politics unless it leads to Gaia. He uses the term territory. What territory is needed for subsistence. This changes everything.

Remember when we criticized backward people because they were not able to change. Well, modern civilization is much, much harder to change. That is the extreme challenge to change the arrow of time to point to Gaia.

The main issue is geo politics. Politics of the earth, but the earth is an actor, the most important actor. Many local innovations are required. People have to get back to basics.

Bernie is part of this move to Gaia. Bernie has brought politics back.

Can you imagine where we would be right now with issues like Green New Deal, medicare for all, etc., etc., without Bernie?

The House Democrats’ new campaign chief on Tuesday poured cold water on the progressive Medicare for All plan, dismissing it as just “one idea” out there and warning that its estimated $33 trillion price tag was “a little scary.”

“The ‘Green New Deal’ is an idea. ‘Medicare for all’ is an idea. But there are many others that are out there,” Rep. Cheri Bustos (Ill.), the chairwoman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), said in an interview with The Hill.

Bustos, who worked in the health care industry for a decade before she was elected to Congress in 2012, said she had no objection to debating and holding hearings on Medicare for All, which will happen in the coming months. But she also cautioned that Democrats should be “proportionate” when talking about health care.

“The vast majority of Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives want to see us fix the Affordable Care Act and make it functional,” she said, “so we can protect people with pre-existing conditions and so people have affordable health care.”

As the leading Democratic presidential contenders increasingly unite around Medicare for all and the Green New Deal, I don’t understand why the chair of the DCCC is trying to divide Democrats by putting forward talking points from Republicans and insurance corporations,” said Waleed Shahid, a spokesman with the progressive grass-roots group Justice Democrats.

Bustos also pushed back against the small but high-profile effort by the Justice Democrats — a group aligned with Ocasio-Cortez — to primary incumbent lawmakers who don’t meet the group’s progressive purity test. Labelling the DCCC “an incumbent-friendly organization,” Bustos extended an olive branch to Ocasio-Cortez, sitting down recently to breakfast with the rising Democratic star, though she declined to say what the two discussed.

“We live in a democracy where anybody’s allowed to … run against anybody,” Bustos said. “I would prefer that, as far as Democrats go, that we just work together; and we make sure that our colleagues can come back, and that we do what we can to pick up additional seats.”

How long are they going to hold out?

They are making the party irrelevant which is what they want

two factions destroyed politics to get ahead

hint: two factions are rep and dems

Bustos extended an olive branch to Ocasio-Cortez, sitting down recently to breakfast with the rising Democratic star

Oh, to have been a fly on the wall during that tête-à-tête!

Why am I wondering if Cheri’s message was less “olive branch”, and more of a corralling attempt?

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) will join protesters Wednesday to call for President Trump’s impeachment, two progressive advocacy groups announced Tuesday evening.

“Rep. Tlaib and advocates will deliver remarks on the need to address the crisis presented by Donald Trump’s administration, after which a group of protesters will occupy the office of a key lawmaker to demand support for impeachment proceedings,” CREDO Action and By the People, a new advocacy group pushing for Trump’s impeachment, said in a statement to The Hill.

Tlaib’s presence at the rally will once again draw attention to progressive calls for the president’s ouster, as House Democratic leaders including Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) have tried to tamp down talk of impeachment.

New York Congresswoman and rising Democratic star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez revealed that she did not attend Bernie Sanders’ kickoff rally in Brooklyn Saturday, and that she was not asked by Sanders to attend.

During an interview with NY1’s Errol Louis that was taped Sunday but aired Tuesday night, the Inside City Hall host asked AOC “Did you attended the Bernie Sanders kickoff this weekend?”

“I did not,” Ocasio-Cortez said with a laugh, adding “Yesterday was my day to take care of myself.”

“I assume he asked you to be there,” Louis remarked.

“Um, he, he didn’t, actually,” AOC replied. “I think that, we’ve been uh, so we’ve been in active conversation, I’ve been speaking with him and several other of the 2020 candidates.”

“And I think that they have really understood and respected the fact that I think that I want to wait until we get a little bit closer,” she continued. “I think we need to have a conversation as a party, and I think that’s endorsing very early in this race prevents us from having that kind of conversation.

She went on to agree with Louis that she will likely choose a presidential candidate to endorse before the New York Democratic primary.

I hope she endorses Bernie. However, she may not be quite the progressive firebrand I had hoped for. I’m still really glad she’s in and expect great things from her

I think what is more important after this week is to start pushing all NY congresspersons to have their constituents check their voting status, as Mags points out.

All I hope is that she uses her massive platform to spread the word about the need to register in NY so early!

June 25, 2019 Primary Deadlines

MAIL REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-210(3))
Application must be postmarked no later than May 31, 2019 and received by a board of elections no later than June 5, 2019 to be eligible to vote in the Primary.

IN PERSON REGISTRATION (N.Y. Election Law Sections 5-210, 5-211, 5-212)
You may register at your local board of elections or any state agency participating in the National Voter Registration Act, on any business day throughout the year but, to be eligible to vote in the State and Local Primary, your application must be received no later than May 31, 2019

CHANGE OF ADDRESS (N.Y. Election Law Section 5-208(3))
Notices of change of address from registered voters received by June 5, 2019 by a county board of elections must be processed and entered in the records in time for the Primary.

Not sure why that section is headed with the date of June 25th when all of the deadlines precede that date. New York Dem party seems to do everything they can to restrict people voting in their primary.

I don’t know about kos, but I read the comments under that second poll and there were many that assumed redditors & C99 people jumped in to “rig” the poll again.

Oh, probably comrade bots from Crimea came in to influence that poll. Never mind that David Brock and Sally Albright had bot farms to harass Bernie supporters and smear him.

LIVE HAPPENING NOW IN DC: Coalition of Muslim, Jewish Groups to Announce Letter of Support for Rep. Ilhan Omar

Letter will call on Democratic party leaders to equally-condemn all forms of bigotry, threats to members of Congress

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 3/5/19) – On Wednesday, March 6, a coalition of Muslim and Jewish groups will hold a news conference on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to announce a letter of support for Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) that calls on Democratic Party leaders to equally condemn anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, anti-Black racism, xenophobia, and physical threats against any members of Congress.

WHAT: Coalition News Conference Announcing Letter of Support for Rep. Ilhan Omar
WHEN: Wednesday, March 6, 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Outside the Supreme Court of the United States, 1 First St NE, Washington, DC 20543
WHO: MPower Change, CAIR, Jewish Voice for Peace, If Not Now, United Voices, American Muslims for Palestine, Ultra Violet, US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), and other prominent Palestinian, Muslim, Jewish and progressive leaders.
CONTACT: Ahmed Bedier, 813-731-9506, 917-306-3323 or bedier@unitedvoices.com

Following the news conference, the letter of support will be delivered to the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

FBI officials say they are looking into the threat “Assassinate Ilhan Omar” scrawled on a bathroom stall in Minnesota and posted on social media. Omar and Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), the first two Muslim women elected to Congress, have faced constant rhetorical attacks since seeking public office.

I have no idea where this brouhaha will lead, but I’m beginning to suspect not to the place that elitist, establishment, Dems were hoping!

Right on James!

The shameful attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar

The weapon of choice in this campaign has been to demonize her as an antisemite. Her “sin”, it appears, is her continued umbrage over the double-standard that exists in American policy toward Israel and its treatment of Palestinians.

Because Omar has touched what some have come to say is “the third rail of American politics” she is being exploited by Republicans and is being hung out to dry by Democrats. They have put a target on her back. And haters have been quick to respond with frightening death threats and shameful bigoted assaults on her as a Muslim woman. There is no question that these threats against Omar are the byproduct of the sustained campaign of incitement.

It’s important to note, however, that outside of the halls of Congress a different reality is unfolding. The attacks on Congresswoman Omar are being rejected by many Democrats, including progressive Jewish groups, and a debate has been sparked by the issues she has raised and the over-reaction to them by congress.

The House of Representatives may pass their resolution, but that won’t close the door on the discussion Omar’s courage has helped to open. If anything, their behavior and incitement against her has pried it open even further.

Great stuff. May the backfiring continue!!

Bernie Sanders Is Beating Kamala Harris 2-1 Among Black Democratic Primary Voters, New Poll Finds

Sanders’s support among black voters, at 28 percent, puts him in second place among that demographic, behind Biden, at 32 percent. He trailed Biden 31-25 among whites.

There appears to be a strong class element at play in the finding. The same poll found that the demographics Sanders is least popular with — at 19 and 17 percent, respectively — are Democrats who make more than $100,000 per year and Democrats who have post-graduate degrees (two qualities that typically, if not always, overlap). Because of structural wealth and income gaps, that population is heavily white.

Sanders, meanwhile, receives his strongest support support from those making less than $50,000 — a group that is, for the same reasons, much more diverse. The poll found that 30 percent of those with the lowest incomes backed Sanders.

The preference for Sanders among black voters might be better explained by ideology than identity. February’s Harvard-Harris poll found that 56 percent of black voters preferred a “mostly socialist” economic system, against 44 percent who want a “mostly capitalist” one.

I’d bet my house that Dem operatives have a Biden/Harris ticket launch queued up.

The sorry state of the Canadian Liberal Party! Pushing to allow more $$ into elections while at the same time threatening censorship. (facepalm)

Gould wants Google to change its mind about refusing election ads

Democratic Institutions Minister Karina Gould says she’s going to try to persuade Google to change its mind about refusing to run election advertising during the upcoming federal campaign.

She also is still contemplating the prospect of regulating social media platforms if they won’t make other changes she is seeking.

“Other things I think are important are labelling automatic and bot accounts,” she said. “Being more transparent in the activity of taking down accounts that they know to be either automated or coming from foreign sources, and to go even further in terms of political advertisements in general.”

Black activist who took over neo-Nazi group plans to stream Schindler’s List on its website

Stern took over the NSM from its former leader, Jeff Schoep.

The neo-Nazi leader appears to have gone silent since the transfer of power. He did not respond to several requests for comment from The Associated Press, but a post under his name on a Russian social media site claims Stern tricked him.

Stern says he and Schoep have been chatting off and on for over five years, and that the neo-Nazi leader was planning to disband the group so he couldn’t be held liable in the Charlottesville lawsuit.

“That scared me,” Stern said. “If he dissolved that, anybody could have picked it up and re-incorporated again and carried on the same shenanigans that’s gone on for 45 years.
Instead, Stern says he convinced Schoep to hand the reins over to him.

Now, if anyone tries to raise the NSM from its ashes, Stern says they’ll promptly be served with a cease-and-desist order.

We’re going to be actually for the first time streaming on it movies to educate people on the truth about racism. We’re going to put movies like Schindler’s List on there, Amistad, Roots and any other movies that’s going to be coming our way,” he said,
