The Fed can electronically print money, but it can’t print jobs. It can buy bonds, but it can’t cure a virus. It can continue to try to stimulate the market, but it can’t banish fear. As it happens, the economy needs much more than Fed-style monetary support. As even Powell noted on May 13th, “Additional fiscal support could be costly, but worth it if it helps avoid long-term economic damage and leaves us with a stronger recovery. This tradeoff is one for our elected representatives, who wield powers of taxation and spending.”

What’s needed, above all, is greater strategic action from Washington politicians who are more desperately divided and tribalized than ever in the Trump era. History tells us that political actions matter even more in times of crisis. During the Great Depression, the state of the country became so bad that, in 1932, Herbert Hoover lost the presidential vote to Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt in a landslide. However, it took until 1934, even with a president ready to do much to help Americans in trouble, for the country to slowly emerge from the malaise.

1. The white supremacists and other far right elements are armed to the teeth….

…Let me underline that. About 40 percent of all guns in the United States are owned by about 10 million people, some 3 percent of the population.

2. White supremacists are very good about playing passive aggressive games and nursing and sharing grievances…..

3. This is one of the reasons for which the Obama administration did not take the bait when Cliven Bundy, whom I compared to the Taliban, staged a standoff over his refusal to pay fees for grazing on Federal land. People like Bundy were looking for further ammunition to grow their “sovereign citizen” movement, and a violent crackdown would have helped them.

4. White supremacists, militia movement members, and other fringe groups of the far right may make up 10 percent of the US population. The form a key if unspoken part of the Republican Party and provide the margin for Republicans in many tight congressional races…..

5. Likewise, Trump and his Neo-Nazi black shirts are looking for trouble so as to depict the normal people as tyrants and enlist more discontents….

6. African-Americans are made to look big and menacing by the white media and many political figures, but they are a minority….

Chris Hedges is jumping into congressional race in NJ:
Princeton writer and activist Chris Hedges to challenge U.S. Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman in District 12 race

“We must step outside the system, to pit power against power,” Hedges said in a news release about his candidacy. “This will not be easy. It will not happen quickly or in one election cycle. It is a process, but one, especially given the ecocide and corporate serfdom that confronts us, we must embrace as a moral imperative. Voting is a small part of this process, but it sends an important signal to the ruling elites that their time is up, or soon to be up. We must stop fearing them. They must start fearing us.”

Priorities for Hedges include slashing the military budget, ending the country’s reliance on fossil fuels, promoting a “Green New Deal,” battling climate change, and stopping the destruction of the environment. He also believes in getting big money out of politics, opposing the continued creation of charter schools, and promoting the need for a single-payer health insurance program.

EDIT: to correct that he is not primarying the Dem Rep. He is running as a Green, more on this at:

One of the privileges of living in a deep blue state is you always have the luxury of voting your mind, as the electoral votes (and votes in general) are usually going a certain way. I would think that could be a tough habit to break.

I do my best to vote as if I was in a swing state, or at least to take that stand and let people know how I would be voting differently if I was in a swing state. This time, I can honestly say it would be no different.

I’m not voting for Biden, I just can’t.

You know, Cuomo is on TV right now and he was just talking about rebuilding the economy in a different mold, one that addresses wealth disparity. Talk is cheap, but where is Biden? I might be able to hold my nose and vote for Cuomo. IF we must have a corporatist.

I admire Ms. Gray’s writing, but she needs a better word than “essentialism.”
