Gianforte lends himself $1M in bid for Montana U.S. House
Republican Greg Gianforte loaned himself $1 million to finance his bid for Montana’s only seat in the U.S. House, as his Democratic opponent raked in huge sums of cash from small, individual donors ahead of a nationally watched May 25 special election to fill the seat vacated by now-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke.
New filings made with the Federal Election Commission over the weekend show that Gianforte, who made millions from the sale of his software business, has raised more than $3.4 million since launching his bid for Congress.
Meanwhile, Democrat Rob Quist, a musician and cowboy poet making his first bid for public office, has collected nearly $3.3 million through May 5, with most of it — $3.2 million — coming from individual donors.
..
Quist’s campaign said 56,000 individual donors have given an average of $23 per contribution. The FEC does not require donors who give less than $200 to be identified.
“Greg Gianforte’s attempt to buy another election after losing last time shows he still doesn’t get Montana. He will get the message on May 25th that Montanans can’t be bought and will never be for sale.”
The rest of what I’m reading/watching/etc will be added to the comments. Have a great day!
Tips, Comments, Complaints, Etc!
I have a complaint, of sorts. Almost all of the videos do not seem to have the closed captions feature available. I don’t absolutely need it, but it make watching the videos easier without having to turn the volume way up.
Thanks for all of your efforts in trying to keep us informed.
Oh no! That used to be something I was sure to do as I know we have many hearing impaired readers etc, especially during the BNR days. I’ll make sure to enable it again whenever available going forward. Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks.
As we start compiling candidates for the 2018 races I’ll break those posts out into more individual BNR style things, and then do news roundups, etc separately. I’ll be trying a few new layouts to see what you all think and trying to dumb things down so its easier for users to create their own content while trying to bring back the rec functions etc. I know the open thread layouts aren’t the most convenient to read, but at the moment the most convenient way for me to post. All the feedback I get helps a ton so please keep it coming!
Jaffe held a facebook Town Hall yesterday:
A reminder:
Take that, Bill Maher!
Will there be a livestream?
I’ll try and find it, and if not will lead with the video In the morning. Benny/Humphrey discussed a liveblog so theres always that option as well (I’ll be well past asleep thanks to my working vampire hours lately!)
no worries. i may not be available, either. i’m sure whoever is up and watching (if anyone) will post it. you need your zzzzzzs. :O)
A morning recap is probably the best idea. Aside from Benny and myself evening participants are few and far between. It is hardly worth the effort to live blog it.
Discussion instead.
Democrats divide on Bernie’s 2020 plans
You’ll have to read the article for quotes from the leader of the other place. I also have to point out this paragraph:
Look how awful Sanders is! Trying to give Dems a message instead of focusing on his own future campaigns or fundraising. So despicable!
Just terrible isn’t it? I tend to think Bernie is not going to run, and (as the article states) his main goal is to shape the Dems’ message. He has a lot more power to do that as a potential candidate than someone who has taken himself out of the 2020 conversation. If he doesn’t run, it will be so interesting to see who he endorses. Merkley? (see post below)
And I give a flying F about what Brazile (or Kos) has to say about anything
Lol, I literally laughed when I saw the Brazile quotes (and Markos for that matter, as he is far more divisive than anything Bernie does or does not do). I still think theres a chance that Sanders will run, though again as a Democrat, not third party. Unless theres some major revelations that shake things up I just do not see that happening, though Im not opposed one bit. Even as an Independent he now has the name rec and the organizational ability to match the DNC’s incompetence.
If he does not run I expect him to be a very high profile backer of one of his strongest surrogates (wish it was Turner but I think she has more local ambitions be it Mayor or Gov/Senator of Ohio), but wouldn’t rule her out for VP or definitely a cabinet position. I think Sanders respects Gabbard a good deal and would provide a lot of support for her if she chooses to run (and I really think she is going to). Same with Merkley. Neither of which I am 100% with on every policy (but then again was not with Bernie either), but out of any candidates being floated they certainly are more appealing than Booker, Whitehouse, and others.
and Warren? (sorry Polarbear, I accidently went in and edited your comment with my reply somehow. I think I have it back to what you said! -LD)
Oops, thought I’d added Warren in there. She falls somewhere between the Merkley/Turner/Gabbards group and the top rung of the more establishment candidates. I like her positions on many issues but her style doesn’t get me fired up as much as others I’ve mentioned and I think she would have a tougher campaign than some people might expect. I wholeheartedly supported her Senate run, wrote quite a few articles on it, and am not opposed to her running, especially if she surrounded herself with the right kind of people (aka: not Clinton people).
Warren does not have much foreign policy experience, but she would still be leaps and bounds better than the current occupying group.
Just saw this:
Poll: Biden is top Dem in 2020 matchup with Trump
There’s a whole chapter about Biden’s indecision to run in 2016 in the book, Shattered. I’m still reading it, but not doing a big deep dive because it’s a wide pond, not a lake about the baroness’ campaign.
Biden would be in the Clinton/Pelosi etc. corporate group and I do not think I could vote for any of them.
Probably the same people who told us that HRC was the top dog all the way to Trump.
Franken is the quiet dark horse in the group. He is slowly gaining power along with the Bernster, Merkey, Warren, etc. in the Senate. Don’t think for one minute that his stand on issues like Net Neutrality ain’t popular with the great unwashed like us. LOL. He was so controversial that when he beat the corrupt national Repuke candidate, and won the election; he figured he better lie low to be effective, and boy, has it worked! 🙂
i don’t like him much anymore–he seems to have taken to the neolibs like a duck to water. but i’m open to learning more. i was so happy when he first got in.
Then there is this:
yuk. doesn’t show much empathy for true progressives if she’s lauding HRC’s “resistance” group.
I understand, though, being a lowly pcp, at times i compliment people who ARE doing good work on an issue, while I don’t like their overall neolibconism.
yes, on top of his not taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from Wall St. for a speech! What an idiot, right? We scoff at integrity here and we’re proud of it! /s
Shaun King had a twitterstorm about it this AM:

There are 7 to follow in that stream. Tweets 4-6 are pretty damning of GOS.
Was the Election Rigged Against Bernie Sanders? DNC Lawsuit Demands Repayment for Campaign Donors
No press coverage what so ever! What’s up with that? It is the Deep State. Not only are they against Bernie, they are also against Trump, hence all the leaks. We really shouldn’t be excited every time Trump gets leaked because it is the Clinton group/Deep State that is setting him up. If he goes down, he will be replaced with his VP, I think it would be worse for the country.
Bernie Sanders blasts ‘reckless and dangerous’ Trump for reportedly sharing classified information
I wish Bernie would not get involved.
tRump is paying off his IOUs to his gangster bankers. They come in all colors: Russkies, Chinese, EU, USA(!) USA(!), etc. Shrill represents the same rotten, stinky mindset. I hope the two, and the media class war between them, eat each other alive. The sooner, the better!
The trouble is, that the MSM is playing this to make HRC=good, Trump=bad.
Hillary is for Hillary!BTW how many turns does she get to break the glass ceiling? Enough already!
DNC Faces Another Class Action Lawsuit After $1 Million in Bonuses Given Out
Ran into a student from Eugene at the airport and she was making $15/hr. campaigning–canvassing. I was like where do you get a gig like that??? Still, happy for her and glad she was excited about participating.
I hope they get Rendell, cannot stand the guy.
You and me both. There is a growing list of corporate Dems that I have no use for.

LOL!
Onward Together ! Gives me chills up and down my spine. How can anyone compete with such a powerful and new slogan ?!
I didn’t think it could get worse than ‘Im With Her’… but I was definitely wrong!
My marching was in no way support for you, Hill. You cannot claim ownership of the women’s march.
He’s right.
