I want to give a big thankful shout-out to Benny for her political commentary/analysis and humphrey for working Twit-world. Appreciate it! 🙂 T and R, LD!! Hope this ole wrinkle can scare up the energy to stay awake for tonight’s show/debate. LOL.

magsview

Yes! I love seeing Benny’s remarks during these things. And thanks to WindDancer and jcitybone too.

orlbucfan

🙂

Benny

Everyone was participating last night! I enjoyed being here, got home just in time for the debate opening. I can start the debate thread tonight if it’s agreeable to the Nest.

orlbucfan

Works for me, Benny. 🙂 I hope this old mare can stay awake tonight and watch at least some of the show.

magsview

Yes please! I hope to be able to scoot away to my computer at least a few times. Maybe I’ll even sign in from my phone (something I’ve only done a couple of times).

One of Warren’s best moments, imo:

Benny

We’ll see tonight if Harris raises her hand.

Tyrannocaster

First, let’s see if they ask the question. 🙁

magsview

Castro & Warren look like they’re about to make out in the bottom pic, lol. But seriously, Castro did quite well. He certainly took it to Beto!

magsview

As far as that first tweet about Tulsi:

Asked about pay equality, the congresswoman responded: “Well, first of all, let’s recognise the situation we’re in: the American people deserve a president who will put your interests ahead the rich and powerful. That’s not what we have right now.”

“I enlisted in the Army National Guard after the Al-Qeada terror attacks on 9/11, so I could go after those who attacked us on that day,” she added. “I still serve as a major. Served over 16 years. Deployed twice to the Middle East.”

The response stirred criticism online from audiences, who noted how Ms Gabbard frequently discussed military service and the September 11 attacks throughout the night, even when asked about issues that had nothing to do with terrorism or international conflict.

Much ado about nothing there as far as I’m concerned.

Twitter user wrote. “She cheapens it.”

The Intercept columnist Mehdi Hasan also compared Ms Gabbard to the former New York mayor, saying, “Tulsi Gabbard managed to mention Al Qaeda and 9/11 in her very first Democratic debate answer to a question on… the economy.”

As though the Afghanistan and Iraq invasions didn’t affect our economy?? How many trillions is that price tag up to now? And, excuse me, but aren’t we still over there?

magsview

A very different take on that same thing:

la58

jcitybone

Beto was the worst I thought. Of course inconsequential Ryan and Delaney weren’t great either. (Edited to say that I see Mr. Williams agrees with me below.)

Benny

I think Warren’s hug is genuine. Castro got a little emotional when Jose (the questioner) made the border situation quite personal in the intro to the question. So I think Warren is just giving him some support.

magsview

That’s cool! I could use a hug like that tbh. Kinda envious.

Hear, hear X 1000!!

Benny

and Bernie was the first of three who was willing to take them on!

My answer to GoadWilks would be to not bother. These people are losers who have made their own beds, and think all is well in this dystopian nightmare.

You are not going to find common ground with those who have internalized Republican propaganda. Spend your time reaching those who don’t understand what’s going on, and are open to learning.

wi61

My Answer –the corporatist owned R party

magsview

Hard to disagree with this:

Benny

and Amy too. She’s not appealing to the base enough.

magsview

Hubby was actually liking some of Ryan’s stuff until he self-destructed talking about the Taliban.

magsview

Daou’s really all in on this new outlook of his it seems.

magsview

Tyrannocaster

Plus, Daou was full-bore Hillary in 2008, and he became insufferable on DK. That was before I bailed on DK, of course. 🙂

WindDancer13

Even with my rudimentary Spanish (junior high, one year; high school two years; college two years), I found some of the Spanish usage rather silly. When I can follow the comments after XX number of years after studying it and not using it, then their use is poor indeed.

First and foremost, people need to stop calling Beto’s use of Spanish as being fluent. He is not. It is very studied (he even inserted “medicine” instead of “medicina”) in his statement. While I am used to Spanglish, this would not be a word that would have been switched from the Spanish to English in a normal conversation.

Second, people who are fluent in a language, learn not only to speak the words but also how to think in that language. Noe of them appear to do that or the words would flow much more smoothly.

polarbear4

is anyone else worried about Bernie‘s pivot to blaming a “handful of billionaires“ instead of the larger systems he’s been blaming? When I heard him say that in the pre-debate clip, it did not ring true. It feels like some advisers have told him to simplify things for us, and I don’t like it.

he needs to trust that we understand things.

I DM’d Roseanne.

Todd was awful

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2019/06/chuck-todd-mucked-up-the-democratic-debate.html

What’s the best way to effectively and efficiently moderate a two-hour debate between 10 eager, thirsty presidential candidates? After watching Wednesday night’s Democratic debate, I am pretty sure the answer is not having five separate moderators—especially not when one of those moderators is a logorrheic Chuck Todd.

The Meet the Press anchor was the clear loser of the first of the two debates this week, which is a bit of a shame, because he was so evidently excited to be there. But excitement can easily transmute into disorder, and a stumbly, fumbly question-asker does a disservice to both the viewers at home and the candidates on stage. The moderator’s job, especially in crowded, early-stage debates like this one, should be to help viewers differentiate between candidates, ideally by asking clear, pointed questions that force the presidential aspirants out of their stump speeches and pin them down on issues and priorities. But as FiveThirtyEight noted, Todd himself uttered the fourth most words of anyone on the debate stage despite only being on camera for half of the event. That verbosity might not have been a problem if his questions had been great or even helpful ones. They largely weren’t.

magsview

I certainly agree here!

polarbear4

WindDancer13

Beat me to it. = )

This was going to be my main horror story for the day. Alabama again…I posted a piece yesterday about a car dealership was told to stop giving away shotguns to people who were buying cars.

Alabama woman is charged with the manslaughter of her own unborn baby after she started a fight that led to her being shot and the fetus dying

According to [police Lt.] Reid, Jones and Jemison got into an argument over the baby’s father.

‘Let’s not lose sight that the unborn baby is the victim here,’ Reid said.

‘She had no choice in being brought unnecessarily into a fight where she was relying on her mother for protection.’

Jones will be remanded to Jefferson County Jail, where she will be held on $50,000 bond.

Damnit! Women are breeders, and we will lock you up until you understand it and act accordingly.

magsview

More of this please.

magsview

Benny

This is where Bernie can shine tonight if asked.

magsview

Benny

Glad I missed that conversation, I don’t have a sponge bob throw at the TV!

magsview

Gag. He did well, but humble not his middle name.

polarbear4

I lost the link, but apparently he was very much involved in housing foreclosures during the great bail out.

Tyrannocaster

Oh, yeah. He was also an immigration hardliner before his current conversion to leftie. I can’t believe anything he says; professional politician all the way. Expediency squared.

Tyrannocaster

Benny

No one asked him about those, but he did have a good night in invoking the Section 1325 more than once. Now I want to know more about that statue.

“ you are a fossil-fuel company, whose carbon emissions are destroying the planet, Mr. Trump and congressional Republicans offer billions in government subsidies, including special tax breaks, royalty relief and funding for research and development. But if you are struggling to pay your utility bill, you get the free market—higher and higher electric bills.

If you are a pharmaceutical company, you make huge profits on patent rights for medicines that were developed with taxpayer-funded research. But if you are a taxpayer, you get the free market and pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs—and in some cases you die because you cannot afford the medication you need.

If you are a monopoly like Amazon, owned by the wealthiest person in the U.S., you get hundreds of millions of dollars in economic incentives from taxpayers to build warehouses, yet you end up paying not one penny in federal income taxes. But if you are a small business that falls behind on your store’s rent, you get the free market—which means you get an eviction notice.”

polarbear4

polarbear4

polarbear4

Tyrannocaster

The larger problem is that there is no governance when you do that. It’s logjam: look at what’s going on in Oregon right now even without gerrymandering. With it, that’s what you will have everywhere. I don’t know the answer, although I would be in favor of letting the South secede; not kidding, either. The red states get far more money from the blue ones than they contribute to this country. Can you even begin to imagine Alabama or Arkansas without federal help?

polarbear4

Not nearly strong enough language. The Supreme Court is an illegitimate institution now, and is rubber-stamping lawlessness and tyranny by the majority.

orlbucfan

He’s throwing it back to the states. I hate the FRighties but this may not be as bad as it seems. He also hung up the census question which may turn out to be a good thing eventually.

magsview

From what I’ve read, it’ll work for both main parties to some extent. But I’m pretty nervous about it overall actually.

Tyrannocaster

I know it’s an appalling source, but for once, Jennifer Rubin has something to say that’s worth reading about this.

wi61

Pretty much guarantee’s the Wi legislature will be R for a very very long time. Once the next R governor is elected they will tighten their grip and finish the job to the point of being permanent R.

This is important, and I hope Bernie starts saying this when they ask him if he’s going to abolish all private insurance.

LOL

Benny

Birdies–probably won’t post the debate thread until 7CT. Hope that works for the Nest.

polarbear4

thanks! im going to a debate party at an apartment, but they’re calling themselves Apocalypse Carousel. 😂 yay.

WindDancer13

Interesting name: Apocalypse Carousel. Is it a reference to Logan’s Run, maybe with the twist that your chip goes red if your net worth is less than a billion?

polarbear4

thanks for the reminder! I just watch that again Not long ago.

wi61

My twist; Red for well off, Blue means you service the Rich, no color means your a “Dunsel” and go to Carousel.

orlbucfan

Not sure I’ll be awake. Temps have been murder down here (hot + humid) lately. But I will definitely check out the commentariat tomorrow like I did today. I hope the Bernster blows Biden out of the water.

wi61

I figured last night was the undercard and just read the comments here about it. Tonight ill be here for the main event , I predict that Biden gets the most air time and the softball questions.

WindDancer13

I am thinking Biden will get less air time: Less room for him to screw up, but yes on the softball questions.

WindDancer13

Good article. For those without access to NYT, this site contains a good portion of the article:

What Happened to America’s Political Center of Gravity?

The Republican Party leans much farther right than most traditional conservative parties in Western Europe and Canada, according to an analysis of their election manifestos. It is more extreme than Britain’s Independence Party and France’s National Rally (formerly the National Front), which some consider far-right populist parties. The Democratic Party, in contrast, is positioned closer to mainstream liberal parties.

. . .
And the United States’ political center of gravity is to the right of other countries’, partly because of the lack of a serious left-wing party. Between 2000 and 2012, the Democratic manifestos were to the right of the median party platform. The party has moved left but is still much closer to the center than the Republicans.

The last paragraph that is included in this snippet from the NYT article almost, but not quite, makes up for lumping progressives with liberals and neo-liberals.

WindDancer13

Random thought of the day:

During tonight’s debate, I would like to see this happen.

Bernie (start with a smile): “Hola! Que tal? Como estas? (serious) Sorry, folks but that is the limit of my Spanish, but not knowing a person or group’s particular language does not mean that I do not understand the issues you face. Inequalities do not have a language barrier.”

Tyrannocaster

Lucy and the football again.

Pelosi: “We are gravely disappointed in the actions taken by the Senate in opposing regular order of Congress … we will not engage in the same disrespectful behavior that the Senate did in ignoring our priorities … we will reluctantly pass the Senate bill”

I cannot say how disturbing her actions are to me. This really completes the picture of her I painted yesterday.

Pelosi, Hoyer, Schumer, and all the other dinosaurs have to go; that’s it. Today’s Supreme Court ruling makes that even more important. Right wingers are dancing in the streets, as usual.

FFS.

Captain of the cave in.

Remember the the weapons of mass decption have already declaired Biden the winner of tonights debate. Bernie will be chastised by them. They might give him a 3rd place ranking behind Warren

polarbear4

WindDancer13

All of it is suspect:

“private assurances”
“voluntarily”
“24 hours after the death”
“90-day time limit” “temporary intake facilitates”

And when Trump says “No”?

Pelosi just agreed to hold children for 90 days which is well outside the 72-hours set by law.

Report: Hundreds of Migrant Children Detained at Border Patrol Facilities Beyond Legal Time Limits

Unreleased government data indicates that hundreds of the nearly 2,000 children being held in border facilities have been detained longer than the legally allowed 72 hours after apprehension, the Washington Post reported Thursday.

According to the Post, some of the migrant children—most of whom arrived at the border unaccompanied by parents or guardians—have spent more than a week at Border Patrol stations and processing centers. But legally, Border Patrol has to transfer the minors to Department of Health and Human Services shelters more appropriate for housing them within 72 hours of taking them into custody. One government official told the Post that nearly half of the children have been held by Border Patrol for longer than the limit, and another said that a couple hundred—many younger than 12 years old—were held for about a week.

Before or after 90 days, there is no guarantee that these children will not just be shifted to another facility to start their time over again.

Sorry: Lock Pelosi up!
