Schadenfreude time.

Liberals Ruled the Debates. Will Moderates Regain Their Voices?

Cry me a river.

But with moderate Democrats repeatedly drowned out or on the defensive in the debates, the sprint to the left has deeply unnerved establishment Democrats, who have largely picked the party nominees in recent decades.

Some of the anxiety among moderate Democrats is flowing from the wobbly debate performance on Thursday night by Joseph R. Biden Jr., the former vice president. For months he was the great hope of many centrist Democrats: a candidate of stature who appeared capable of building a broad coalition in the primary, resisting the impulses of the activist left and leading a do-no-harm presidential ticket to victory by reclaiming voters exhausted by Mr. Trump’s erratic behavior.

But so far, that scenario has not come to pass.

Mr. Biden has quickly proven an imperfect champion of political pragmatism, stumbling in his efforts to navigate the cultural crosscurrents of his party and struggling to excite voters the way his counterparts on the left, like Ms. Warren and Ms. Harris, have started to do.

I like how they left Bernie out, there.

And if Mr. Biden was supposed to hold back the Democratic Party’s leftward march and keep its energies trained on Mr. Trump, then the debates this past week showed that mission has already faltered badly.

And then there’s this reputable figure bloviating:

“It’s imperative that our candidates are listening carefully to all of the voices in the party,” said former Senator Claire McCaskill, a Missouri moderate. Referencing the frequent liberal outrage on Twitter, she added, “social media may promote the loudest voices, but they’re not the majority.”

Really need an emoji for barfing.

Finally:

Indeed, liberal activists are growing increasingly irritated about the tendency of some party leaders to view issues through the prism of how they will play with mostly white moderate and center-right voters.

Yet for policy-minded moderates and other Democrats fixated above all on defeating Mr. Trump, the debates raised an unsettling prospect — that with Mr. Biden as an unsteady standard-bearer, the forces of electoral and ideological pragmatism could be overwhelmed in the primary by the demands of the rising left, and the candidates who embrace them.

Schadenfreude
“Schadenfreude is the experience of pleasure, joy, or self-satisfaction that comes from learning of or witnessing the troubles, failures, or humiliation of another.”

And that’s what I’m feeling right this minute.

polarbear4

this is still framed as a game, and it’s taken for granted that moderates are correct.

It seems that our campaign is the only one saying it’s time for people to quit dying and staying ill because they can’t afford care. It’s time to stop pouring our blood and treasure into never ending wars.

are we are too busy to care anymore?

Oh my, I didn’t know that! Westmount is the chi-chi section of Montreal. Gated neighborhoods, guards-that’s where the rich people live in Montreal. That’s where Pierre Trudeau lived.

High praise for this article. Embers’ reporting taken apart piece by piece with tons of citations and quotes. Really excellent.

Tyrannocaster

Hoo boy; that’s a devastating article. Pass it around.

The whole philosophy has taken over our party. Maybe we should all move to the Independent party, like Bernie.

Not a good look

“See the kids! See the kids!”

Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, Pete Buttigieg, who came to the Homestead detention facility for child immigrants Friday, was shouted at by protesters as his car drove away — begging him to come to a cluster of ladders in order to see the children detained beyond the fence, as other candidates had.

“I’m very disappointed,” said Alessandra Mondolfi, an activist who had screamed into Buttigieg’s black SUV, after Buttigieg left. “Because this is about them. This isn’t a press conference. This is about them.”

When a phalanx of Democratic candidates visited Homestead Friday, Buttigieg was the only one who did not stop to climb the ladders erected by the facility’s fence, frustrating protesters who had come to hold up signs and giant cardboard hearts in hopes of reassuring the children detained inside.

“Was that Mayor Pete who didn’t see the kids?” one woman asked, running up to Mondolfi. She made a sound of frustration as Buttigieg’s car disappeared down the road.

Other presidential candidates who have come to Homestead after or before their debates this week have made a point of going to the ladders — Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders stood on the ladder, as did former Rep. Beto O’Rourke, and others.

On Friday, Sens. Kamala Harris and Kirsten Gillibrand, former Colorado governor John Hickenlooper, and former housing secretary Julián Castro all came to the ladders to try to see the children inside the facility. As they stood, some holding binoculars, protesters explained the conditions they had been observing inside for weeks, including children who appeared far younger than the center’s minimum age.

Pete is awful. Pompous, and intelligent in some ways but dumb as a rock in others. Unfortunately, his smarts are the kind that a lot of people think are the best kind, but there are many kinds of intelligence; see Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences [Howard Gardner]. I run into this all the time training dogs; working Border Collies are really smart dogs in some ways, but unsuited for many jobs at the same time, sometimes BECAUSE of the type of intelligence they have. Same goes for people.

And did you know that showoff Pete thanked the hard-of-hearing interpreter at the debate in sign language? Great that he can do that and all, but does anybody think that wasn’t simply showing off because he could do it? I have three languages and I try to refrain from doing that sort of thing; people think it’s irritating. They are right. If the language comes up in a way that your ability can actually further the conversation (like actually translate something, or make a cultural point), then fine, but otherwise, stop showboating, already.

Tyrannocaster

Autrement, tu ne fais rien que le con! LOL.

(Otherwise, you’re only being a jerk.) 🙂

polarbear4

I am a big fan of different kinds of intelligence – – many different kinds. I will look that author up. Thanks.

I do not see Biden’s name in the quoted material, but I didn’t go to the full article, so I am sure it is there, right?

polarbear4

I’m not sure if he even went.

Tyrannocaster

I would be astounded if he did.

Enjoy (or not, your choice):

Of course not; they have insurance like the rest of us who are lucky enough to have it do. The government pays for it. It’s commercial insurance though, so she has to have a staffer make all the calls for her so she doesn’t waste her time like the rest of us do. There’s not a separate government-run socialist insurance, LOL!

polarbear4

“As of 1 January 2014, Members of Congress (MOC) and Congressional staff purchase their insurance through the District of Columbia’s small business health options program (SHOP) exchange, also known as DC Health Link. Contrary to popular belief, Congressional members do not receive free health care. As it does for other federal employees who purchase their insurance through the FEHBP, the federal government provides a subsidy equivalent to 72 percent of the weighted average of all FEHBP premiums.

Therefore, MOC and staff pay approximately 28 percent of their annual healthcare premiums through pre-tax payroll deductions.

Although DC’s SHOP offers a total of 57 different ACA insurance plans at the bronze, silver, gold and platinum levels, the Office of Personnel Management has ruled that MOC and staff may only receive the employer contribution if they purchase insurance at the gold tier. If we look solely at the District of Columbia’s SHOP health plans and federal employer contributions, Members of Congress receive benefits very similar to those enjoyed by any employee of a large company.”

Snopes.

Tyrannocaster

That’s interesting. So they have to pay 28%; I really did think that the government footed the whole thing. But to most of those people, that 28% is like a tank of gas. Everybody in congress is not filthy rich, but a lot of them are. Some have hundreds of millions of dollars.

polarbear4

yeah, I was surprised, too. I forgot it changed with the ACA.

Polls don’t mean anything at this point, but cue exploding heads:

I wish Bernie had called Maddow out on her (and the audience) mishearing what he said. He said the quote she used “Misrepresented his thinking.” Bernie’s record on guns, although it looks like it is all over the board, has been pretty consistent.

His votes reflect the wishes of his constituents. He has voted for or against some bills based on the amendments that are attached to them. those amendments make a huge difference whether or not a bill is adding something positive or negative to the bill. This is what a thinking person does.

How many Congress members actually follow the wishes of their constituents? I see this as more proof that Bernie is the right person for the presidency. I just wish he would make it clearer.
