They’re canvassing with a cardboard cutout of Bernie, lol. 🙂

Being active in environmental matters seems to be one of the most dangerous jobs these days.

‘It’s our problem’: Brazilian drama brings Amazon rainforest battle to screen

Deep in the Brazilian Amazon, an environmental activist meets with a journalist who warns that a mining company is responsible for a looming environmental disaster. “People are already getting sick,” he warns, before promising to bring her documentary proof the next day.

But in the jungle, someone is watching. Driving to their next meeting, the activist hears a phone ringing in the back of her car. She opens the trunk – and finds the journalist’s dead body.

The gruesome discovery is the opening act of the latest blockbuster series from Brazil’s telenovela powerhouse TV Globo: Aruanas. The series focuses on environmental journalists and activists in the country’s vast, forested interior, where 57 environmental defenders were killed in 2017.

Sounds like the knives are out for the Justice Democrats now. For real.

And that very unfortunate exchange between the House Dems and Saikat Chakrabarti; just makes me feel really, really bad. To me it seems like they’re both doing unfortunate stuff. I’ll see if I can find it again.

That’s the second time in just two days that a DEMOCRAT has used Breitbart talking points against a fellow Democrat. Talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel!!!

(Yesterday was the first, the first that I noticed anyway, when an anonymous Dem aide called AOC a “puppet”, a total right-wing talking point.)

We aren’t the only ones upset about that tweet.

Focusing on race is the wrong place to have the debate among Dems. It’s all about big money. (both of these link to WAPO article)

Here’s a good piece from 2014 by @ryangrim and @zachdcarter on how the Congressional Black Caucus went to war with itself over allegiance to Wall Street

Bernie: Being first Jewish president would be ‘another barrier broken down

“Being Jewish, I get hit every now and then with anti-Semitism,” he said. “You respond with anger, and you respond by appreciating what it is to understand that there are people in the African-American community, in the Latino community, in the gay community, women, who are discriminated against every day.”

Tamanisha was responding to this, where the Dem party (it’s getting harder for me to call them ‘Democratic”) took JD Saikat’s tweet out of context (he was replying to someone else) and weaponized identity politics to attack Justice Democrats.

George Conway is an odd character; you get the feeling that he and his awful wife are perfecting some sort of post-Trump show act, but nonetheless, he posts interesting stuff. Here is a very good article about why Trump is able to get away with what he does. Psychology Today.

This list will begin with the more benign reasons for Trump’s intransigent support. As the list goes on, the explanations become increasingly worrisome, and toward the end, border on the pathological. It should be strongly emphasized that not all Trump supporters are racist, mentally vulnerable, or fundamentally bad people. It can be detrimental to society when those with degrees and platforms try to demonize their political opponents or paint them as mentally ill when they are not. That being said, it is just as harmful to pretend that there are not clear psychological and neural factors that underlie much of Trump supporters’ unbridled allegiance.

It’s fairly lengthy, but good reading (if scary).

Yes, the way polls break it down re: how much schooling one has attended=less or more educated, is a shame. I know people with lots of post high school degrees that can’t even spell correctly.

WindDancer13

Dammit! I was hoping people would just shrug the spelling off as typos.

magsview

LMAO

wi61

X 10 🙂

wi61

Yeah I got plenty of typo’s ,but I really don’t give a rats a** I just try to get my point across. PS I absolutely hated grammar in K thru 12.

WindDancer13

I actually do not remember hating grammar, but I was (and still am) a voracious reader which helped. I only taught one year at 7/8th grade level and think that what I saw with students was similar to my experience. The major readers didn’t mind it as much as others.

The rest of my teaching was at the college level, and many of my students were basically remedial. What I found that helped was showing them how to diagram sentences. I made a game out of it, and a great many of them actually liked it (eventually).

During one of my reviews (where another instructor comes in and critiques your teaching), it was noted that he was greatly surprised by the diagramming lesson and highly recommended me.

PS: I manage a lot of typos. I blame it on my keyboard usually as someone comes in and moves the keys around occasionally. I swear that is true!

M4A is questionable on the merits? Really?

https://edition-m.cnn.com/2019/07/13/politics/pete-buttigieg-medicare-for-all-free-college-cnntv/index.html

Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg weighed in on his opponents’ plans to implement “Medicare for All” and free college tuition, calling them “questionable on their merits” and “pretty far out from where Americans are.”

“I do think that we should be realistic about what’s going to work. And just flipping a switch and saying we’re instantly going to have everybody on Medicare just like that — isn’t realistic,” the South Bend, Indiana, mayor said in an interview with CNN’s David Axelrod slated to air Saturday night.

“I think that when it comes to a lot of these policies that we’re being pushed to do — say that we can pay down the last penny of tuition for any student including the child of a billionaire. These are things that are questionable on their merits and of course also pretty far out … from where Americans are.”

polarbear4

billionaires ain’t paying interest, Pete. geesh. And don’t worry, we’ve got a transition plan for Medicare for all. double geesh.

https://truthout.org/articles/voters-dont-want-democrats-to-be-moderates-pelosi-should-take-the-hint/

Speaker Pelosi came into her position in 2018 on a buffeting wind of high hopes and great expectations. She won over wary progressives for a time by facing down Trump in the shutdown clash over border wall funding, and spawned a million Trump-trashing memes by ironically clapping at him during the State of the Union.

Yet the border wall fight grinds on, and a meme is just a meme. By stomping on the energetic progressive wing of her caucus while protecting the conservative Democrats who tried to block her speakership while consistently voting with Republicans, Pelosi has made it clear where her loyalties lie.

She insists she is defending the majority, which is all well and good if she intends to actually accomplish something with that majority. This does not appear to be in the cards. Instead, Pelosi seems to be stating her intent to cling to a tepid status quo in order to maintain power for power’s sake.

Pelosi believes she is saving the House from a Republican takeover, but voters who see Democrats at a standstill when action is required — or worse, see Democrats acting and voting like Republicans — have historically gone and voted Republican in the next election, because why not have the real thing when all you’ve got is a cowardly imitation.

Pelosi would do well to note that the “moderates” she defends did not bring about the Democrats’ 2018 midterm victory alone. The passion of the progressive base, vividly represented by The Squad, were a large part of that success. In point of fact, former Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), or perhaps even Rep. Kevin McCarthy (D-California), would probably be Speaker had it not been for the energy progressives brought to the polls.

If Pelosi doesn’t remember that soon, she will wind up handing her gavel over to some right-wing ghoul again, and she will have herself to blame.

ICYMI (I just saw these):

WindDancer13

The candidates recently answered questions from the National Education Association. His answers were clear and on the mark. His NEA grade has consistently been an “A.”

For contrast, here is Biden’s responses. Some of which were not so clear. However, do not underestimate his appeal. We keep doing that to our detriment. I do question some of the phrases that he overuses: “Believe me,” ” No joke” and “I really mean it.” He is terribly defensive even though the one year (2007-2008) that I can find an NEA grade for him is an “A.”

In 2015, many NEA members complained that the endorsement for HRC was made too early and that it did not take into consideration those who favored Bernie. However, there was another reason given that could prove problematic (this is a huge endorsement for candidates), and that reason is that many were waiting to see if Biden would enter the race.

For 2019/20, it looks like the NEA is going to hold off on an endorsement and maybe pay more attention to the input of its members.

When Will the Largest Teachers’ Union Endorse a Presidential Candidate? Here’s What We Know

DuBois [chair of NEA’s Democratic Caucus] said he’d like to have NEA leadership make an official endorsement sometime in early spring. Right now, he said, members are still considering their options. After the presidential forum, he asked about 50 of his caucus members who their No. 1 pick was so far. The four most popular candidates were Sen. Kamala Harris, Biden, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and former HUD Secretary Julian Castro—interestingly, he said, only one or two people picked Sanders. [emphasis added]

I feel about the NEA leadership pretty much the way I feel about the Planned Parenthood leadership. They are bound to the establishment.

polarbear4

Time for the members to vote!

WindDancer13

Now would be a good time to go tell the NEA that. The comment sections are empty except for the one I made at each video.

Aint Supposed to Die A Natural Death
Aint Supposed to Die A Natural Death

Wow. IIRC, in the last quarter, the profession that contributed most to Bernie were teachers and the workers who contributed most to Bernie were Walmart employees. The NEA is out of touch.

WindDancer13

Yes, teachers are his #1 contributors, but the organization itself is establishment.

From the above linked article, it does not look like they plan to allow members to vote:

Meanwhile, Peter Henry, a delegate from Washington state, had introduced a new business item that would have called upon the NEA to consider members’ preferences when deciding which candidate to support, either through a poll or voting on a website. The measure narrowly did not pass, with many delegates saying that the way for members to give their input is through their state affiliate president.

WindDancer13

Too late to edit the above, so in case you are interested in other candidates answers, here is the link:

https://educationvotes.nea.org/presidential-2020/forum/?utm_source=edaction&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=presidential

So far, the others have not been posted to YouTube.

PS: NEA has 3 million members.

WindDancer13

Addendum:

Not all of the candidates choose to attend the NEA forum, most notably Buttigieg. There were some of the minor players there that I didn’t bother to listen to. Of the three others (besides Bernie and Biden) that I watched, here are my main take aways:

Julian Castro: Very weak responses. In fact, he gave up almost two full minutes of his time. Very little to basically no policy.

Elizabeth Warren: So-so. Not fully prepared, but managed to use up her time, mostly with her two cent ideas and reminding everyone that she had been a teacher.

Kamala Harris: Did quite well once she got past her giggling. Very well prepared and used her time to the best effect for the most part, but there was some slippage. She had something tied around her wrist that was very distracting.

Flashback:

This blurb in my email from The Atlantic brought back a fond memory. My fifth grade teacher had the entire set of L. Frank Baum’s Oz series. I read them all at least once, so I immediately knew about a character named Tik-Tok in them. I wonder if the people using the app know the history of the name.

The age of TikTok begins.
If you didn’t know, now you know. The fun, jumpy, puppy-and-meme-laden video app is well on its way to becoming the next big social network. It’s already broken the 1-billion-monthly-users mark and ranks as the third-most installed app worldwide—just behind Facebook’s WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger—for the first quarter of 2019. TikTok overtook YouTube as the star of this year’s VidCon, an influential gathering of content creators in Anaheim, California. “The older generation doesn’t realize how important TikTok is yet,” one 21-year-old attendee told our Gen Z translator Taylor Lorenz.

Had to chuckle over the highlighted phrase.

Bernie Sanders accuses Biden of ‘misinformation’ in pitched battle over ‘Medicare for All’

Bernie Sanders on Saturday accused former Vice President Joe Biden of using “misinformation” to attack the Vermont senator’s “Medicare for All” proposal, further escalating an emerging battle among leading Democratic presidential candidates over health care policy.

During a two-day New Hampshire swing on Friday and Saturday, Biden repeatedly criticized other leading 2020 contenders’ push to largely abandon private insurance and enroll all Americans in Medicare.

Sanders seized on those comments, arguing in a statement his campaign released Saturday that under his proposal, there would be no gap in coverage as Americans transition into Medicare for All over four years.

“At a time when Donald Trump and the health insurance industry are lying every day about Medicare for all, I would hope that my fellow Democrats would not resort to misinformation about my legislation,” Sanders said in the statement.

He said under his proposal, “over a four-year period, we will transition to a system in which Medicare is expanded to cover every man, woman, and child in the country.”

“It is preposterous to argue that as we expand Medicare for All that people with cancer and other illnesses will not get the care that they need,” Sanders said. “In fact, under Medicare for All, the good news is that we will end the horror of millions of people going into bankruptcy and financial distress simply because they need hospital care for serious conditions.”
