Happy Saturday birdie friends!

I began my morning by catching up on yesterday’s thread and left some replies there FWIW.

The most important one to agree with the posters to keep some patience with allies like Alexandria! We must woo progressives to endorse Bernie, not attack them for not having done so already.

p.s. I found this morning that I had to refresh the page a couple of times so my ‘likes’ would stick, may have missed some I was trying to do.

And MSNBC wonders why they lost Progressives. If Faux News is to much for the Neolibs, They can always tune into MSNBC the R lite network.

polarbear4

and getting all the debates? wish the candidates would refuse, but maybe they are all in.

def! can you get this on Twitter and then @sensanders? i don’t know how to download/upload yet.

WindDancer13

Right click on the image you want to use, and select Save Image As. Name the file and put it in a folder that you will remember or create a folder to use just for political images.

On Twitter, at the bottom left of the tweet box there is an icon labeled Image. Select that then select the image you want to upload (the file you saved). Write your message Post.

Note: You may need to resize images before uploading. Twitter seems to like something around 500 H x 750 W pixels. Though smaller/larger will load, if too large they may be cut off and have to be clicked to see the whole image.

Thanks for the sizing tip WindDancer!

Does Google Translate have an emote translator? = )

polarbear4

Thank you. Bernie bird. Bernie bird. :0)

WindDancer13

Ah, thank you! I generally don’t use emotes, so am unfamiliar with what most people readily recognize. Also, I think six years may be too long to have not updated my glasses. = )

polarbear4

Sometimes I use the thank you Hands as meaning a prayer.

wi61

I use the emotes on and off but PB you seem to have quite the variety. Where did you get them?

wi61

I don’t tweet but anyone who does please do!!!

WindDancer13

Thank you, Joy Reid! Well, kind of . . . still making excuses for HRC’s loss though.

May I direct your attention to Reid’s comment found at 3:26 to 3:45. She admits that the Crime Bill was bad for blacks and that in 2015/2016 was used against HRC as if she had been the one to write it. Let that sink in. Biden wrote that bill and is damned proud of the fact. If the pundits think this is what lost the race, then this is where we need to pummel Biden now while there is still plenty of time to get rid of him.

By the way as First Lady, full-throatedly supported the bill, so quit trying to minimize her efforts now. Also, it wasn’t the Russians who were saying it.

Note: I will download the clip (done) and try to extract Reid’s statement. If successful I will post it here it case anyone wants to use it for Twitter/FB/whatever.

The discussion is about the birtherism campaign against Harris, but nothing about the disinformation being spread about Bernie and our policies.

Edited to add: There is a short spot in the video that says someone has set up a fake Joe Biden site which is getting more hits than any of Biden’s own sites. Gee, so sorry to hear that.

polarbear4

thanks 🦜

Another dystopian one. Sorry, but it is too meaningful to pass up.

https://www.commondreams.org/news/2019/07/06/medicare-all-sponsor-rep-jayapal-challenges-bidens-comments-labor-unions-and-health

Sharing the relevant clip from Biden’s interview, Jayapal tweeted Saturday, “This argument that ‘unions broke their neck to get employer-based insurance’ is an OLD argument that isn’t relevant today.”

The congresswoman listed some of the labor unions supporting her Medicare for All bill—including the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), and National Nurses United (NNU)—and argued that these organizations “understand” the benefits of transforming the country’s for-profit healthcare system through proposals such as hers.

For example, Jayapal wrote, unions understand that “workers are paying more and more for their employer-insurance because for-profit insurance companies are raising premiums hugely for employer healthcare as well.”

“Unions understand that when they have to bargain for healthcare, they give up money that should be used for wages,” the congresswoman continued.

Labor unions also “understand solidarity and standing with [the] least amongst us,” she added. “They’re ready to fight for ALL OF US.”

WindDancer13

Unions also understand that just because they won last time doesn’t mean that they will get positive concessions the next time and that compromises could be made on the health care they have fought for in the past.

Choices do matter.

Yet again, Trump’s short-sightedness and lack of understanding of trade policies bites US jobs creation, but are the deals being offered a pig-in-the-poke?.

Casualty of trade war: Chinese investments in US grind to a halt, blocking new jobs

It looked like a happy reversal of an all-too-familiar pattern: Instead of U.S. factories fleeing to China and leaving thousands of American workers floundering, here was a Chinese company setting up in the United States and offering good old-fashioned factory jobs to Americans.

Unhappily, like many other potential bright spots in the U.S. economy, new plants like Jushi’s have become a casualty of the yearlong trade conflict between the U.S. and China.

Chinese foreign direct investments in the United States, including new plants and commercial developments, sank last year to just $5 billion, from $29 billion in 2017 and $46 billion the prior year, according to the Rhodium Group, a New York-based economics research firm with a specialty in China.

Jushi has plans for a second phase of its $400-million project, but that, and the additional jobs it would provide, are now on hold, say local government officials. The company declined to comment.

There is a lot of information in this piece about the investments and jobs that China has made in the US, but it really makes one wonder why they are doing so. In light of the fact that US manufacturers have shipped so many jobs overseas claiming cheaper labor, why would China invest here with our higher labor costs?

On average, Jushi’s workers earn about $18 an hour, according to economic development officials. That’s decent pay, especially in this hardscrabble area where living-wage jobs are scarce and a low unemployment rate masks significant structural problems in the labor market.

Antonio Pringle, 36, was hired as a welder for $18 an hour. He had earned more at welding jobs in Charleston’s shipyards, but the work wasn’t steady.

The article states that Jushi is in part state-owned. How much of a part, and how does that benefit the state? Who exactly benefits from the package that South Carolina has agreed to? Without the numbers of what SC is paying in subsidies (more corporate socialism), it is hard to say just how much each of those jobs is costing the taxpayer.

Labor costs in South Carolina were more than double those in China, but wages were rising rapidly there. And state and local governments in South Carolina offered Jushi an attractive package: 250 acres of free land; tax credits and rebates; help with worker training and road improvements; and several million dollars in cash grants.

Jushi agreed to spend $400 million and hire 800 workers, breaking ground in December 2016.

Corporations are not known for their exceeding good will toward workers or for paying their share of taxes. Are the Chinese investments a good thing or are we setting ourselves up for more problems? Patiently waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Additional information:

Chinese factory workers are now getting paid more than ever: Average hourly wages hit $3.60 last year, spiking 64 percent from 2011, according to market research firm Euromonitor. That’s more than five times hourly manufacturing wages in India, and is more on par with countries such as Portugal and South Africa.

As China’s economy expanded at breakneck speed, so has pay for employees. But the wage increase has translated to higher costs for companies with assembly lines in China. Some firms are now taking their business elsewhere, which also means China could start losing jobs to other developing countries like Sri Lanka, where hourly factory wages are $0.50.

Source from 2017 (the Jushi deal was made in 2016): ‘Made in China’ isn’t so cheap anymore, and that could spell headache for Beijing

So instead of paying Chinese worker $3.60/hour or going somewhere where the pay is even less, Chinese investors have opted to pay US workers an average of $18/hour. Yeah, makes sense. /s

It is a funny piece. Then you realize that the cost of health care (no matter where it is) is not all that funny . . . especially if you do not have the resources. I want to borrow Noah’s credit card…just for an hour or two, I am not greedy (ha!)

https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/451841-biden-apologizes-for-remarks-about-segregationist-senators

Former Vice President Joe Biden apologized Saturday for his recent remarks about his ability to work with segregationists during his time as a Senator.

The remarks are his first mea culpa over the comments this campaign cycle.

SNIP

“Folks, now was I wrong a few weeks ago to somehow give the impression to people that I was praising those men who I successfully opposed time and again? Yes, I was. I regret it and I’m sorry for any of the pain or misconception I may have caused anybody.

polarbear4

ya, joe, we believe you.

whoever had the idea to run him should be exiled from politics forever. Except that I’m really glad they did.

WindDancer13

key phrasing: “was I wrong a few weeks ago to somehow give the impression to people ”

It is only the impression he is “apologizing for” not the actions.

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/451848-pelosi-on-disagreement-with-ocasio-cortez-omar-tlaib-pressley-theyre-four

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), in an interview with a New York Times opinion columnist, said that despite their popularity, progressive congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) each only get one vote.

Pelosi’s comments follow a recent split between progressives and moderate Democrats over a $4.6 billion spending package passed by Congress last week aimed at remedying issues at the U.S.-Mexico border. Some progressives opposed the bill.

Pelosi told The Times in an interview published Saturday that she believes the four freshman lawmakers made themselves irrelevant by voting against “our bill.”

“All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world,” she said. “But they didn’t have any following. They’re four people and that’s how many votes they got.”
