The only way to make tonight’s marquee Event resemble a Debate is for the moderator to control the microphones.

Warn the participants that interrupting their opponents speaking time will result in a shutoff mike. Give this warning before the Debate and then again on camera for the audience to understand.

Trump tried to shut Hill up and I don’t think he should be allowed to do the same thing tonight. Overtalking, Fox news style, needs to be eliminated during this debate.

Take our country back.

The big picture: USA Today joins several other media companies integrating new types of live fact checks into their coverage of tomorrow’s debate.

The Washington Post’s Fact Checker team — Glenn Kessler, Salvador Rizzo and Meg Kelly — will be doing live fact checks during the debate, which will be included in the live blog accessible via the homepage. The Post will also have a full round-up of fact-checked claims that will post online, in video and will appear in the print edition.

NBC News’ live blog of the debate will feature debate analysis that includes two reporters, Jane C. Timm and Adam Edelman, fact-checking in close-to-real time on NBCNews.com.

CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, Major Garrett, will be part of its live coverage offering fact checks during the coverage. Garrett is leading a newly-launched voter integrity unit for CBS that analyzes misinformation.

The New York Times’ live fact check operation will draw on the expertise of more than two dozen reporters and editors from around the newsroom, including subject matter specialists and writers, according to a spokesperson.

The Wall Street Journal launched a new tool called Talk 2020, which allows users to search a database of transcripts to find out what Biden and Trump have said about the issues over the years. The tool is meant to help readers fact check the debates in real-time.

CNN’s in-house fact checker, Daniel Dale, will contribute real-time fact checking throughout the evening at CNN.com/FactsFirst and on the CNN.com homepage.

ABC News says via a spokesperson that it will fact check the debate “during analysis on the network, streaming, audio and online.”

Twitter said it would be proactively monitor debate conversation by reviewing content — including hashtags and accounts that may violate Twitter’s rules — through a combination of human and automated review throughout the debate.

Should be the league of women voters with Mic control

Paul ADK

It’s a Fox moderated debate, I believe. Of all the networks in this country, that’s the last one that should be moderating any debates.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2020/09/police-officers-qanon/

Chances are, you already don’t trust the police. Polls show that most Americans don’t.

But what if the cop patrolling your neighborhood held bizarre and unsubstantiated views? What if there was a chance that officer in the patrol car idling down the block was watching videos about a conspiracy holding that a satanic cabal of high-profile liberal pedophiles is running the world’s most insidious sex ring? Or was swiping through memes popularizing a made-up plot about kidnapped children kept in underground tunnels so their blood can be harvested to help keep wealthy people alive? And what if they sincerely believed it all?

In a small but growing number of places across the country, that’s just what is happening, as police officers have endorsed QAnon, the overarching conspiracy theory comprising these beliefs.

It might have been inevitable that QAnon would find an audience among police officers; the conspiracy’s adherents, like cops, decidedly skew Republican. In June, Jesselyn Cook and Nick Robins-Early wrote for the Huffington Post about how Law Enforcement Today, a website and podcast platform that claims to be the largest law enforcement-owned and operated media outlet, has pushed authoritarian politics and far-right conspiracy theories to its audience. Though the site hasn’t explicitly backed QAnon, it has endorsed the pro-QAnon politician Marjorie Taylor Green, and has embedded tweets bearing QAnon hashtags in at least a dozen stories.

Police officers have a history of believing lurid conspiracy theories about child endangerment—conspiracies that have repeatedly arisen on the right at times of progressive gains. In 1991, Robert D. Hicks, an academic working as a law enforcement specialist with the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, published his research detailing how cops bought into some of the most farcical allegations of the satanic panic of the 1980s. His book, In Pursuit of Satan: The Police and the Occult, documents how law enforcement put credence in elaborate tales purporting satanic abuse at daycare centers. In one story spread by a Virginia investigator, children were supposedly bussed to an airfield, flown to a ceremonial site for ritual abuse, then put on a return flight and bussed back to the daycare in time for unsuspecting parents to pick them up. In another, police arrested two brothers that had supposedly got a voodoo priest to cast a death spell on a judge. The brothers were charged with conspiracy to commit murder, on the basis of the hex.

Jamie Longazel, an associate professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, is at work on a book on the Blue Lives Matter movement, and the police culture undergirding it. He thinks one reason QAnon may be particularly alluring to cops now is that they face growing criticism from the left—which QAnon labels as evil pedophile enablers—while being embraced by the right.

Aside from that, Longazel says police are generally likelier to believe in conspiracies, pointing to the santanic panic era, and to a study he recently came across from 1964 that found exceptionally high police membership in the the John Birch Society, the influential far-right conspiracy group. As many as three percent of all members were police officers, according to the study.

Longazel says the the beliefs embedded within policing encourage such thinking. “They sort of operate on myth and fantasy on a day to day basis,” he explains. “At any minute someone is going to do some harm. And there’s this myth that police are the one way to control crime.”

More broadly, police officers and departments, who are used to operating with unchecked power, have a history of spreading information that comports with their world views, but not necessarily reality. In just the past several years, police have pushed multiple fabricated stories just about dairy products, spreading false stories about how milkshakes and frappucinos were involved in nonexistent plots to injure them—a milk-based mini-conspiracy of sorts. Some police have also pushed lactose-free misinformation about antifa supposedly traveling to suburban communities to riot, which is a full-blown conspiracy theory.

NY elections may be the worst run in the country. Not going to make a difference for President, but could affect down ballot races. I’m definitely voting early in person

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/new-york-mail-voters-get-wrong-return-envelopes?bftwnews&utm_term=4ldqpgc#4ldqpgc

Elections officials in New York City are blaming a vendor error after an unknown number of voters who requested absentee ballots were sent return envelopes that contained the incorrect information of different people.

Residents in the largest US city seeking to vote absentee are required to return their ballots in a signed “oath envelope.” Both the ballot and the “oath envelope” are mailed to the voter together.

But in recent days, voters in Brooklyn and Queens have complained that their return envelopes contain other people’s addresses. If they were to sign the incorrect envelope, their ballot would be voided.

humphrey

Just another example of the corrupt New York democratic machine being hard at work.

Benny

I decided to vote in person because the mail is definitely delayed around here.

no surprise/

King Cuomo II hates absentee and early voting.

I’m voting early. Again. As I did on the last two election days.

Two A+ polls show Biden with big leads in PA—possibly the most crucial state in the election.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2020/09/29/trumps-pennsylvania-problem/?utm_source=reddit.com

At this point, though, the Pennsylvania of 2020 looks very little like it did in 2016, and a deep dive into the new polls shows why.

One vital area is the Philadelphia suburbs, a region that was huge for Democrats in their 2018 midterm victories and comprises more than one in five Pennsylvania voters. The NYT-Siena poll shows Biden leading in them by 24 points (54-30), while The Post-ABC poll has him up an astounding 38 points (69-31). Either margin would be significantly bigger than in any recent presidential election, with Democrats having carried them by between 7 and 17 points in every race since 2004. Trump in 2016 lost them by just 13 points (55-42).

Trump’s erosion is also particularly pronounced among whites with college degrees. The Post’s Philip Bump wrote Monday about how that looked on the national level, and Pennsylvania is a case in point. While this demographic split 48-48 in 2016, Biden now leads by 23 points in the Post-ABC poll (61-38) and by 26 points in the NYT-Siena poll (59-33).

But it’s not just among college-educated whites; it’s also among non-college whites. While Trump carried them by 32 points in 2016 (64-32), he currently leads by 13 in the NYT-Siena poll (52-39) and 17 in the Post-ABC poll (58-41).

This is the point at which Trump supporters begin throwing things at their screens. But the polls were wrong in 2016! Fair enough, but they were only off by a few points. Hillary Clinton led by two points in the final RealClearPolitics average, so they wound up being off by about three points. The media’s failure was, to a large extent, not recognizing margins of errors and how much undecided voters would break for Trump. That was clearly the case in Pennsylvania, where Trump won voters who decided in the final week by 17 points.

And there’s another crosstab in the poll that speaks to just how much his base has shrunk. The Post-ABC poll asked voters about whom they voted for in 2016. And while just 1 percent of 2016 Hillary Clinton supporters say they’re now backing Trump, 8 percent of 2016 Trump supporters now say they’ll cross over and back Biden.

LOL 😂 Just another example of tonight’s farce.🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️

https://thehill.com/campaign-issues/518736-trump-campaign-wants-to-examine-bidens-ears-for-electronic-device-during

President Trump’s campaign wants to have a third party examine both his and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s ears for electronic devices before Tuesday night’s presidential debate, according to a new report.

The president has said he is willing to participate in such an inspection, Fox News reported, but Biden has not as of Tuesday morning.

Both the Trump campaign and Biden campaign did not immediately return a request from The Hill asking to confirm the Fox News report. The Commission on Presidential Debates also did not return a request for comment.

Edited: To add that maybe they should get Jerry Spinger to moderate it.😁

Benny

That means Trump will be wearing one then.

Paul ADK

Fox is moderating it, what’s the difference?
