I know. But I will say that what Bernie is attempting is to use the Dem party’s own apparatus and process to undermine its entrenched and powerful leadership in order to drag the Overton Window to the left. He has done this almost single-handedly for over 4 years now despite his protestations of Not Me, Us. It requires some real tightrope walking on his part to maximize his exposure and influence. I think we agree on what Biden really is and is not – a corrupt, dishonest molester, racist, and war hawk and decidedly not progressive – but I understand Bernie’s need to tread very carefully at this juncture. It ain’t an easy task. Were he to win, he’ll need every possible ally going forward to undo the damage done by the Republicans and neolib’s.

T and R, Mr. Ornery!! I agree with you both. The biggest obstacle we face is there is no younger candidate running on these issues who has the smarts and experience to maneuver through the shark tank of (idiotic) power. Hopefully, with the young progressives/liberals getting elected, one will eventually emerge. 🙂

Yes but will there be anything left by then?

We shouldn’t have let them beat us down in 1968.

And we certainly shouldn’t be allowing it now.

Well my position (no surprise) is that I will support whatever decision Bernie takes about continuing his campaign. I do think that, if the campaign goes forward, there is very little chance that he will take the gloves off against Biden, and it will continue to be a coronavirus/economic fallout focused campaign. I think it’s more likely than not that he will suspend if he does poorly in the ridiculous Wisconsin election, but those results wont’t be available to at least April 13.

I agree with what pgl said in the post above.

And yes obf we do need younger leaders. AOC is too young at the moment. Jayapal is foreign born so couldn’t run for President. Perhaps Ro Khanna?

Rashida? Love you, humphrey, but you know how I feel. i pray to god he stays in.

jcitybone

I love Rashida. Right now we have to get her through that primary challenge in August. She’s the most at risk from the squad.

I love her too, jcb, and have been supporting her financially. She is home girl to her core, in just the kind of environment that I grew up in many many decades ago and she reminds me of my mom.

I love Rashida too.

I love Rashida. But she’d have a really hard road to the White House. I wish Tammy Baldwin had run instead of Klobuchar.

She wasn’t born in the US.

will our democracy survive?

as noted before, been working with a historian friend who has been working for almost a decade on the coup that has happened here in the US

he thinks that Bernie has been the most important politician in the last 50 years

but he has been saying for a couple of years that it is not clear that our democracy, or democratic – republic can survive

in addition, there is Gaia which has been run over as a resource using the framework of the last 300 – 400 years seen in colonization, science, politics, etc.

in an essay, “What are Politicians For? they take a stand for the future of the collective

that is what Bernie stands for

others stand for the short term continuation of what they already have

I hear you and I agree. I certainly hope Bernie turns the tide of public opinion by launching a political counter attack and stays in the race until at least he is mathematically eliminated because he is the last best hope we have. If and when he drops out I hope we in the Movement focus on either starting a new left party or support the Green party. I will be sad if Bernie endorses Biden and even sadder if he campaigns for Biden. I will never vote for Biden. I want to destroy the Democratic party so it never ever wins another presidential election. I want to knee-cap the Democratic party so it can never again stand in the way of working class progress. If our Movement doesn’t back the Greens or start a new third party (perhaps by joining the Greens) I will go with Joe Rogan’s suggestion and vote for Trump. I figure Trump is the lesser evil than Biden because he will only be in office for four more years whereas Biden with a corporate Dem vice president could hold back Medicare for All and the Green New Deal for eight more years.

I have also, humphrey, in the last few weeks at times succumb to despair that Bernie just doesn’t have the instinct to attack. At that last debate when Biden criticized him for speaking well of Castro and other leftist leaders, I almost screamed through my tv at Bernie not snapping back at Biden’s relationship with the arch racist Strom Thurmond and even memorializing him at his funeral. But, I have no other choice than to stick with Bernie. To Don Midwest’s question, “will our democracy survive”, my response is no; whether tRump or Biden, we’re doomed. I’m depressed.

magsview

Me too, depressed, and very much wishing that Bernie had stuck up for himself more in debates, and also don’t really see any other choice but to stick with Bernie. Who else is there? It’s crazy.

And I sure can’t fathom how we’ll survive the next 5 years with either Trump or Biden in charge. With Trump it’s obvious (he’d keep wrecking the environment and putting his corrupt buddies in charge so they can keep raiding the treasury), and with Biden? Well, there’d be almost zero chance that he could last more than a couple of years at best, so that means it’d be his VP/his advisors/his donors running things and I don’t like that scenario ONE BIT! Because whoever it/they would be will almost certainly not be to my liking.

I’m THIS close to supporting a third party, to hell with the whole bunch of them. Let the establishment Dems merge with the never-trumper ‘moderate’ (spit) Republicans, stop the charade, and get on with it without them. Because voting for them hasn’t done much other than delay the carnage.

The best I can come up with (to retain a sliver of hope) is that the bastards come to their senses and realize that they have no hope of beating Trump with Biden unless they truly bring the left flank into it by letting Bernie choose Biden’s VP.

phatkhat
phatkhat

Or letting Bernie BE Biden’s VP. That’s the ONLY way I’d vote Biden. Because, as you say, sooner or later, the VP will be in charge.

So many of you covered a lot of my thoughts, So I’ll just say this. Once it plays out and if Bernie’s not the nominee we have a place where we can rant, vent, cope with our loss, cry and extend a few virtual hugs to pick and support one another. Then figure out what’s next for us progressives.

That’s why we call this site The Nest. 🙂
