AOC is running for re-election in NY-14. It includes parts of the Bronx and Queens in NYC. It’s partisan index is D+29 and 47% white, 11% black, 17% Asian, with 47% Hispanic. Her main opponent is Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, a correspondent at CNBC, who is running decidedly to AOC’s right. AOC has raised more than $10 million and has more than $4 million on hand. Caruso-Cabrera has raised nearly $2 million and has about $1 million on hand.

Our schools should never be on the chopping block, even when budgets are tight. Now is the time to strengthen our education system and make it more affordable to all, so that students are prepared for jobs in a post-COVID economy.

Honor in Immigration
Undocumented individuals fill so many of the essential jobs that kept this country running during COVID-19. It is past time to make them full members of the country they call their home.

Some of Wall Street’s most prominent names have donated thousands of dollars to Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s opponent in the upcoming Democratic primary in New York, data from the FEC shows.

Stephen Schwarzman, co-founder of Blackstone has donated $2,800 to Cabro-Cabrera’s campaign. A further five Blackstone employees have donated the same amount to her campaign as well.

David Solomon, chief executive of Goldman Sachs also backed Caruso-Cabrera to the tune of $2,800, along with three other Goldman employees.

Paul Tudor Jones, the billionaire founder of the Tudor Investment Corporation also gave $2,800 to Caruso-Cabrera’s campaign.

A number of other donors to Caruso Cabrera’s campaign include staff at Wall Street firms including Evercore, Elliott Management, and Apollo Global Management.

Caruso-Cabrera has raised just over $2 million so far, while Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign has received more than $10.5 million, FEC data shows.

The median size of Ocasio Cortez’ donations is around $10, according to a Financial Times analysis of FEC filings and the online fundraising platform ActBlue. The FT reported while Caruso-Cabrera has received more generous contributions, Ocasio Cortez leads the way in smaller donations.

Republican economist Larry Lindsey, told the FT: “Michelle knows more about the world and how things work than probably a solid majority of Congress.”

Caruso-Cabrera has been a controversial figure in the Democratic race as she was registered as a Republican until 2015.

She authored a book called “You Know I’m Right: More Prosperity, Less Government” in 2010 where she claimed Ronald Reagan, a Republican who served as president from 1981 to 1990, was her favourite president of all time.

Ocasio-Cortez told the FT: “It’s not surprising that Republicans would finance the campaign of a life-long Republican in a Democratic primary.”

She added: “While we have pushed against corporate power with policies that favour everyday working Americans, those donors prefer to bankroll a candidate who answers to Wall Street over the needs of our constituents.”

The Democratic primary for the 14th Congressional District takes place June 23 and incumbent Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez seeks another term.

The congresswoman is running against former CNBC reporter Michelle Caruso-Cabrera and community organizer Badrun Khan.

The Chamber of Commerce and Michelle Caruso-Cabrera, Ocasio-Cortez’s top challenger, are focusing chiefly on two things. One is Ocasio-Cortez’s March vote against a $2 trillion economic relief package, the other her opposition to Amazon’s plan to build a jobs-rich headquarters in a Queens neighborhood in the district, which the company abandoned in 2019.

“She voted against the interests of my neighbors,” Caruso-Cabrera said in an interview, citing the bill’s money for the unemployed and small businesses. Congress approved the legislation.

Caruso-Cabrera has cast Ocasio-Cortez as a divisive elitist who ignores the district, which also covers parts of the Bronx. Caruso-Cabrera said that after Congress approved the coronavirus bill and the pandemic was ravaging New York, Ocasio-Cortez “stayed in a luxury apartment in D.C. with a Whole Foods in the lobby.”

Ocasio-Cortez, the only Democratic vote against the relief legislation, said in a debate last week that she opposed it because its help for large corporations was a gift “for Donald Trump and his friends.” She also said the bill denied benefits to many immigrants. She said the Amazon headquarters plan guaranteed no jobs for district residents and would have cost taxpayers money and boosted rents.

Ocasio-Cortez campaign spokesperson Lauren Hitt said the lawmaker has been in New York and Washington 96% of the time, attending over 200 events in the district.

She said the campaign has helped raise over $1 million to help community groups weather the pandemic, and Ocasio-Cortez has attended two protests in the district against police treatment of African Americans, helping distribute protective masks. She said she remained in Washington for days after the relief bill passed feeling ill but wasn’t tested for the coronavirus.

Caruso-Cabrera, 51, has vulnerabilities in the overwhelmingly Democratic district. A registered Republican until several years ago, she’s a former CNBC anchor who lived in Trump Tower before moving to the district last year.

A 2010 book she wrote proposed eliminating entire government agencies including the Education Department. It suggested ending Social Security’s and Medicare’s automatic benefits and instead giving people money to control themselves, risky proposals Congress has rejected. A foreword by her co-anchor Larry Kudlow, now Trump’s economic advisor, called her ideas “long-overdue reforms.”
