You guys don’t get it, do you?
In the last election you were faced with the most unpopular presidential candidate in living memory (disclaimer: I’m old enough that for me, memory goes back to Eisenhower) and you still managed to pick someone who was so disliked by so many people that she lost anyway. You simply cannot face the fact that a majority of Americans think the political system is broken — no, let’s not mince words; they think it’s fucked. You hide your heads, ostrich-like, at the thought that a hell of a lot of Americans voted for someone not because they liked him, but because they thought that it would mean a change from the one party system we have had for the last several decades.
One party, two wings: corporate Republican control or corporate Democratic control, that’s what you offer. And you’re doing it again. You have put all your weight behind a sleazy, creepy guy who reminds an awful lot of us of that family member we don’t talk about but watch like a hawk in case he gets alone with one of the kids. A guy who doesn’t give a damn about people who live outside his bubble yet claims he’s for the little guy…the little guy at MBNA, anyway. Faced with a chance to actually run someone competent against a ghastly, ethically ruined autocrat, you choose someone who appears to have only mariginally more mental acuity and barely more verbal coherence than our word-salad president, with the result that you have to keep him out of unscripted scenarios because every time he opens his mouth he bites his own ass; he’s eaten his own cheeks already.
Meanwhile, the president destroys one norm after another and all you can do is bitch about how you can’t do anything. Please, spare us the theater. Democratic oversight is a joke, a really bad joke — a Lucy-and-the-football joke, but with the same obscene punchline every time: “The White House refuses”, followed by what, exactly? Richard Neal won’t get taxes because he wants Mitch McConnell to pass some legislation that Neal is behind. Nancy Pelosi (“Mom”) won’t even countenance impeachment because it would get in the way of passing legislation that Mitch McConnell won’t allow to pass, Steny Hoyer and Chuck Schumer (“Dad”; Lord, what a dysfunctional family we have here) actively disparage Muslim members of the House (while Mom claps sarcastically at them and deliberately refers to the “Green Dream, or whatever they call it”), and not a single one of you actually uses the one thing you should be using: the bully pulpit. Of course, given that you’ve lost your credibility so thoroughly, you’ve lost the ability to use that tool, so maybe you’re just being realistic there.
I really do understand why so many Democrats voted for Donald Trump; they were wrong to do it, but an awful lot of us don’t believe anything you say any more, and some of us actually put our votes where your mouth is. I didn’t vote for him, but I’m not angry at the people who did; I’m angry at YOU. I understand why some people did what they did, but I cannot for the life of me figure out why you do what you are doing. You seem intent on losing the next election, and if that is your goal, you are doing everything right.
Bless your pointed little heads.
