Glass Half Full, Glass Half Empty

The Progressive Wing Posted on February 5, 2021 by NYCVGFebruary 5, 2021

When I first heard the $1,400 figure in the Rescue package I said “What?” to myself.  Then I did the math and understood that the number completed the $2000 obligation.  Or pledge.  I gave it no further thought

Much to my surprise, large numbers of voters didn’t see it that way.

“Biden said $2000 checks would be on their way to us in the first days of the new administration,” they declared.  Which is true.

At this point, volumes of angry tweets and endless discourse have kept the idea alive that the Biden administration is somehow reneging on their premise and betraying us, because the unhappy folks’ understanding was that the $2000 was to be in addition to the already received $600.

Tomato, tomahtoh.   Everybody’s right.  Everybody is wrong.

At 5:00 Bernie Sanders Budget Reconciliation Bill passed the first hurdle.  I fully expect there to be huge disappointment from many people, with huge relief from others of us.

My view is that Senator Bernie Sanders is now exactly where he is meant to be.  He is having his moment. I have faith that he will do everything in his power to make real the  wishes of his supporters.

The Covid-19 Virus conversation has always been a whiplashing jumble of propaganda and hard facts.  No doubt that’s because of intentional confusion sponsored by the government for purposes of their own.

Yesterday the United States Death Toll was 5,116.  NY Governor Cuomo is finally being held responsible for the deaths on his watch.  The NY Legislature—led by Progressives—is stripping him of his emergency powers and removing as much power from his hands as they can.

At the same time we are being treated to Happy Talk about New! More! vaccines.  Talk about double-masking.  “Dark days ahead, etc.

These are choppy waters and I hope we can navigate through them together even if we see slightly differently on any number of subjects.

Love to all this gray  morning.

How They Stop Us—sometimes. not every time

The Progressive Wing Posted on February 4, 2021 by NYCVGFebruary 4, 2021

You may have heard that a NYC Council seat in Queens was open and that Bernie had endorsed one of the   7 candidates.  Five out of the seven candidates were South Asian American.  One was Black and one was white.

The white guy had held the seat before and was running to regain it.   His name is Jim Gennaro

Bernie’s candidate  is Moumita.  Here’s how it went:

I know the type is small but maybe you can see that Jim Gennaro ran away with the race.  They won’t need our new ranked voting system this time as over 50% gives  you a first round win.

Moumita came in second with about 16% of the vote.

This is how an AOC type effort was defeated  in NYC on Tuesday.

I should mention that this flood the field tactic failed miserably against Jumaane Williams who was a very well known and popular candidate.  The DNC tried it again against Ritchie Torres and it failed.  Third time lucky, I guess.

This is What White Privilege Can Feel Like

The Progressive Wing Posted on February 1, 2021 by NYCVGFebruary 1, 2021

COVID-19 Edition.

My true story:

I’d been attempting to get a  Vaccine vaccination appointment on the New York City Vaccine Signup Portal since it was announced.  No luck whatsoever.  No appointments.  No vaccines.  Facilities closed.

After discussing it with family and friends, I gave up.  The stress wasn’t healthy.

Then the next day, a wealthy private hospital my physician was connected with e-mailed me asking,  “Was I interested in getting the vaccine? ”

If you want to be vaccinated hit “Continue” button.

Next screen listed locations.  Pick your location.  Hit that continue button again.

Done.  What time would you like to arrive?  12 choices.  Hit, continue.

You’re all set.  Hit continue to confirm.

Two days later…………………

I arrived at my vaccination site 1/2 hour early to allow for crowds.  No crowds.  Right up to the floor where my doctor’s waiting room is. Entered my info on the usual  computers. Then I sank down into the deep comfy leather chairs provided.

By this time I was asking myself where are the people and the large vaccination areas?  I know the layout and I couldn’t picture   it.

Soon enough,  my name was called and I entered into a small lab room—same place as when my doctor asks for a blood sample.

Three attendants inquired about how I was feeling.   gave me the shot.  Ushered me to another comfy chair, not deep  but adjacent to the lab, with the instructions to wait 15 minutes and if I’m experiencing the slightest discomfort I should shout out.  If okay then leave in 15 minutes.  They looked at their watches.  Told me the time I could leave, gave me an info card.

When I got home I booked my second shot.

Cuomo and de Blasio talk the equality game but   that is clearly no the practice in NY.

There’s no Magic Move, only good tools—plus OT–1/25/2021

The Progressive Wing Posted on January 25, 2021 by NYCVGJanuary 25, 2021

Israel will halt all flights in and out of Ben-Gurion Airport for at least a week beginning tonight, in an effort to stop the spread of new strains of the virus, reports a Jewish newsletter that arrived in my mailbox today.

“What? “you may ask,   “I thought Israel had corralled all the vaccine they needed and had innoculated   their Israeli citizens.  (Not the Palestinians in Gaza, of course, but Yes to the Palestinians in the West Bank.”)

And so they have.

But vaccination is Only a Tool.  Not a solution.

Just as Masks are a Tool.  Not a solution.

Just as Social Distancing and  hand washing are Tools, not solutions.

The USA is being led slowly and carefully to the truth of our situation.  All the measures listed above are intended to slow the spread.  None of them are guaranteed to end the threat of the Coronavirus.

The vaccine hoopla has at least as much to do with Profit as it does with lifesaving.

The Virus is mutating more quickly than we can contain it.

HIV-AIDS has been with us since the early 80’s.  No Vaccine has ever been found.

Treatments, otoh, have been very effective in keeping those stricken alive and well.  And paying for meds every day for the rest of their lives.

What a world we live in.

The Morning After

The Progressive Wing Posted on November 27, 2020 by NYCVGNovember 27, 2020

Day after Thanksgiving, So, Where are we now?

Ambivalent but tending towards hopeful, in my case.

Biden is clearly our next POTUS. Joe won’t be Bernie with enormous positive change as the guiding principle. On the other hand, Biden will stop the dizzying pace with which our entire country has been circling the drain. (What Trump calls rounding the corner.)

They tell us there is a magic vaccine coming soon. Well, maybe not that magic as mutations mean an endless series of vaccines.

Also, not that soon for the great majority of us.

Still, it’s something we can call a light at the end of the tunnel for now.

This can serve as an opening thread, can’t it?
