Ron DeSantis plans Florida paramilitary force outside federal control

Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, has proposed an extraordinary plan to create a state paramilitary unit that he, rather than the federal government, would control.

DeSantis, a Republican, has asked state lawmakers to fund the establishment of what he is calling the Florida state guard to assist with “state-specific emergencies”.

This force of 200 selected volunteers would “not be encumbered by the federal government”, the governor said.

If the $3.5m plan goes ahead, Florida would gain a state-run force alongside its national guard, which is jointly funded by the federal government and the state.

Florida has previously created a state guard in 1941 to fill in for national guard members who were fighting in the second world war, but the unit was disbanded in 1947.

“Re-establishing the Florida state guard will allow civilians from all over the state to be trained in the best emergency response techniques and have the ability to mobilize very, very quickly,” DeSantis said on Thursday.

Florida would become the 23rd state with a state guard, according to the governor’s office.

The proposal has been sharply criticized by Democrats, who accused DeSantis of authoritarian motives.

“No governor should have his own handpicked secret police,” tweeted Charlie Crist, a Democrat who is running for Florida governor in elections held next year, having previously served as governor as a Republican.

DeSantis said the state guard would be deployed to deal with the aftermath of natural disasters, such as the hurricanes that routinely hit Florida, although these troops could be put to other tasks.

WI– Like the protests against RvW when the USSC overturns it. I doubt the training will be like the armed forces has, I remember Honer’e telling the troops to keep thier weapons down and not in an ready to use position as these are American citizens. It will be like a private Army subject to death sentences whims for deployment. He’ll welcome anti vaxxers to serve which will be just great for the general public.

Hello nesters its been awhile since i kicked off a OT so here goes. The following toon show how little has changed in 90 years. The funny point is one of the anti vaxers in the 2021 side carries a sign saying “my body-my choice” but not when it comes down to abortion rights. In cult 45 GQP land they must be crushed that their brave leader didn’t take office yesterday as they predicted. I’m sure that they’ll make up a new date. Anyway the weather is great today upper 70s and 50s dew points so i’m outside for most of the day!!!! Have at it nesters and have a great day!!!!!

Happy New Year to everyone. This year may be crazier than last year based on the problems that are being carried over from last year so i dont have much optimism for a fresh start to the new year like normal.

One little tid bit locally

A pharmacist accused of tampering with over 500 doses of COVID-19 vaccine at Aurora Medical Center in Grafton was arrested Thursday.

Grafton police said the pharmacist, a Grafton resident, removed 57 vials from a refrigerator and left them out overnight last week. They said the man knew this would render the vaccines “useless” and make people who received them believe they were vaccinated when they were not.

Each vial contained about 10 doses of vaccine. Aurora discarded more than 500 doses and Thursday said it has determined 57 people were given less-effective or ineffective vaccines.

Police recommended felony charges of recklessly endangering safety, adulterating a prescription drug, and criminal damage to property. They estimated the cost of ruined vaccine at $8,000 to $11,000.

Police said they are still investigating the man’s motive and did not release his name. He is being held at the Ozaukee County Jail.

The FBI and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration were also investigating, police said.

Jail records show a Steven Brandenburg, 46, was booked Thursday on similar preliminary charges — criminal damage to property and second-degree recklessly endangering safety, both felonies.

Healthcare officials dont know what side effects the 57 people inoculated could have due to this.

The optimistic view: what could happen if Biden wins big

Since Joe Biden captured the Democratic nomination, he has maintained a remarkably steady lead over Donald Trump. Biden has never trailed Trump and, since the middle of June, his lead has never been less than 6.6 points in the FiveThirtyEight average of polls, and he has rarely fallen below 50%. It is the most consistent lead in the history of presidential polling.

Yet Democrats and anti-Trumpers of all stripes are in a state of depressed panic, almost unable to entertain daydreams of victory in our political Land of Oz. That is totally understandable, and I feel the same way much of the time. The polls are no comfort. Concerns and predictions that Trump will not leave office peacefully or willingly are now rampant — and reasonable even as the president fights coronavirus.
Radical optimism in Biden’s ability to win

Entering the fourth quarter in a cloud of gloom, however, is a lousy way to win a game. So, to boost morale, let me spin out a radically optimistic scenario that is consistent with the polls, the handicappers’ picks, and history and actually more likely than the “Doomsday Scenarios.”

Biden’s national lead in the 538 average, as of Sep. 24, was 50.3% to 43%. More important, since the spring, he has never trailed in the average of polls in the swing states of Arizona, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, and Texas look like true toss-ups right now.

Now, suppose that sometime after all the polls have closed on Election Day, sometime after midnight, the returns from solid blue and red states came in as expected. Most of the votes have been counted in the eight “never trailed” states listed above (remember, most states count mail-in and absentee ballots before election day), the results are consistent with exit polls and other data, and the networks “call” them for Biden.

Around 2 a.m. on Nov. 4, Biden declares victory despite Trump’s steady stream of incendiary tweets claiming fraud, sedition and treason. Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy, already in post-car crash triage mode, issue a joint statement urging Trump to concede given the results in hand. The GOP has effectively conceded for Trump. George W. Bush and other Republicans send congratulations to Biden along with heads of state around the world.

Trump’s bluff has been called. There is no appetite in the GOP to prolong the agony. The process of certifying the electoral votes proceeds in the normal manner, despite the lack of a concession from the lame duck president. Biden and Harris are inaugurated in an orderly manner.

What could happen under Biden’s presidency

With control of the White House, Senate and House, the Democrats enact major economic stimulus legislation and extraordinary COVID-19 spending in Biden’s first week.

By the Fourth of July recess, Biden has also shepherded through a historic government reform bill that enlarges the Supreme Court to 13, puts 15-year term limits on the Justices, adds 45 seats to the House of Representatives, gives statehood to D.C. and Puerto Rico, and abolishes the Electoral College. The disproportionate power of rural (white) voters that has ruled American history will be diminished, the winner of the popular vote will always be elected president and the Supreme Court will be less susceptible to extended one-party dominance.

By the fall of 2021, COVID-19 vaccines have been deployed widely enough so that the school year begins in nearly routine fashion and the working world continues to normalize. With marginal help from some dissident Republicans, Democrats pass significant expansion and protection of Obamacare, criminal justice reform and start reversing Trump’s climate change setbacks.

At that point Biden would have 290 electoral votes, 20 more than needed to win. Now suppose that Biden also has clear leads in two of the toss-up states, say Iowa and North Carolina. Biden’s electoral vote would go up to 311 , a margin that could withstand hypothetical reversals in two or even three states.

Imagine that by this late hour, Republican Senate candidates have conceded in Maine, Colorado, North Carolina, Arizona and Iowa. Democrats will have secured the Senate despite losing Doug Jones’ Alabama seat. The Democrats also will have slightly expanded their House majority.

Discouraged by party infighting and the loss of power, GOP Senators from the blue or purple states of North Carolina, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania resign. With the new seats from D.C. and Puerto Rico, Democratic control of the Senate is all but guaranteed for the next two or three cycles. The added seats assure the Democrats will have a majority in the House for several more years at least.

More importantly, the demography of America will be more accurately represented than ever before.

All the election results in this daydream are what today’s polls would predict.

The legislation is all realistic, even probable, except, perhaps, for D.C. and Puerto Rico statehood. The whole picture is more likely than the “Doomsday Scenario” of Trump calling in the tanks to protect him in the White House.

So, as we enter the final phase, Democrats and Trump’s other opponents should be motivated by hope as much as fear ­— motivated to vote, volunteer, donate, argue and cajole.

In the words of Dorothy Gale, “The dreams that you dare to dream really do come true.” With effort.

Those were the words that the police said and shot at media that identified themselves while doing their job!! last night. Media understands that they may be in the line of fire when reporting but deliberate targeting by so-called law enforcement is totally unacceptable. So many forces at play with the protests especially with white supremacist groups infiltrating protests and causing their own mayhem to make matters worse they were very organized sending info to their members via cell phones so they could go where they could cause the most harm. Wonder if the Feds will use the Patriot Act to track them down. Will there be ANY retraining of our military-style police force? Will the Blue Shield be torn down and cops actually be held accountable by local politicians, local prosecutors and Jurys whom all to often turn their backs and support bad cops. National politicians say thoughts and prayers, the local politicians say “never again” and of course nothing changes… Have at it TPWEers there a lot out there. The only good news out their was the space launch yesterday, Good to see the US back in space!!!

Also it seems $hill tells Dems to vote for Bernie: well actually for the Dem most likely to win in 2020 — well that is Bernie 🙂
Was reading an article about someone at WOTB wanting to organize a protest if Bernie gets screwed over. I think it would make 68 look like a picnic. Keep in mind the police forces nowadays aren’t as “restrained” as they were back then.
