humphrey

They just panned the crowd, It looks pretty full.

polarbear4

Hard to hear right now.

humphrey

True. The sound isn’t the greatest so far.

polarbear4

Are they saying “Bernie is the man taught me how to stand and we love him”? Sweet.

Benny

polarbear4

Better!

polarbear4

Where’s Nina?!?

Wonder if anyone in that choir is for Kamala.

Seems to be paused.

Benny

This looks similar to my local DSA group.

polarbear4

I’m going back-and-forth on my phone. Sort of wish I could do a double window even though it’s tiny. :0)

Benny

From what I can tell in the tweets, Ro Khanna may be there.

Benny
polarbear4

Little comic relief for the wait.

Benny

Yep, it’s a revival!

humphrey

Quite a lead up from the co-chairs!

polarbear4

I worry for Bernie getting Trump angry.

Hopefully, Trump will be satisfied with all the publicity and sales and start a new venture.

humphrey

I like his new speech!👌👍😁

Benny
humphrey

It is going to be one hell of a campaign. None of the other candidates can match this.

polarbear4

And the MIC!!!!

Healthcare is a right! People are stoked.

Benny

Bernie is right to point out that it is crazy that 1 in 4 can’t afford their prescriptions. This is a dig too at Trump with the “crazy Bernie” meme.

humphrey

The other candidates are rewriting their campaign speeches right now. LOL

polarbear4

End austerity for working families and bring some austerity to corporate America! Oh yeah

polarbear4

Benny

humphrey

Small wonder that they are not covering Bernie there corporate sponsors heads would explode.

Benny

Bernie’s speech is deeper than yesterday’s. Amazing everyone, folks are paying attention.

humphrey

That is why it is getting little or no MSM coverage.

polarbear4

it does seem a little long. But if the people there are feeling it, they probably don’t want to go home.

humphrey

Here is Neera’s latest tweet.

Benny

Well well. Finally reclaiming the neoliberal mantel.

https://www.politico.com/story/2019/03/03/bernie-sanders-chicago-civil-rights-1200723

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) talked about his experiences protesting racial discrimination as a college student here at a rally Sunday at the Navy Pier in Chicago.

Sanders, who kicked off his second campaign for the White House last month, also railed against racial disparities, voter suppression, and an unjust criminal justice system.

“The reason I tell you all of this is because my activities here in Chicago taught me a very important lesson that I have never forgotten,” he said. “And that is that whether it is the struggle against corporate greed or against racism, sexism, homophobia, environmental devastation or war and militarism, real change never places from top on down. It always takes place from the bottom on up.

Sanders, along with other 2020 hopefuls, also traveled to Selma, Ala., on Sunday to remember the 1965 civil rights march known as Bloody Sunday.

He spoke there about the presidential campaigns of Rev. Jesse Jackson, who was in attendance.

“Way back in 1984, this man stood up as a candidate for president, and he talked about a ‘rainbow coalition.’ Remember that?” said Sanders. “History will not forget that he talked about the imperative of black and white and Latino and Native American and Asian American to come together to fight for a nation of peace and justice and human dignity.”

Nina Turner, a former Ohio state senator who is co-chairing Sanders’ campaign, praised him Saturday for supporting Jackson’s presidential aspirations: “When you are willing in the 1980s to be one of only two white elected officials to stand by the side of the Rev. Jesse Jackson when he was running for president, that’s the measure of a man.”

Ohhh, an extra nice one!

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-bernie-sanders-navy-pier-rally-20190225-story.html

A crowd of more than 12,000 packed an arena at Navy Pier and boomed with applause Sunday as independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders promised to deliver a political revolution in his latest bid to reach the White House in 2020.

“Three years ago, they thought we were kind of crazy and extreme, not the case anymore,” he said. “We are not only going to defeat (President Donald) Trump, we are going to transform the United States of America.”

Sanders hit familiar notes of his economic policy, calling for an end to tax breaks for multimillion-dollar corporations, making it easier for people to join unions and raising the federal minimum wage.

“It is not a radical idea to suggest that anyone in America who works 40 hours a week should not be living in poverty,” he said.

Before Sanders, 77, took the stage, community activists and politicians alike touted his record as a fighter for social and economic justice, citing the sit-in he led as a student at the University of Chicago in the early 1960s to protest racial inequality.

“Students led by Bernie were sitting down and blocking the entrance to the chancellor,” said photojournalist Danny Lyon, who attended college with Sanders. “When they did that sit-in, people didn’t care. No one patted Bernie on the back … but that demonstration that he led was the first sit-in to take place anywhere in the North.”

Sanders also reflected on his time at the University of Chicago, calling it “an extraordinary moment in my life that very much shaped my worldview and what I wanted to do.”

He said he learned about reality off-campus, which gave him opportunities to participate in the labor and the civil rights movements.

polarbear4

I’m so excited and, I have to say, relieved. Seems like he has more mojo this time than last, even, and people are turning out in droves.

Both Chicago papers gave pretty good write-ups

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/bernie-sanders-recalls-chicago-days-he-brings-2020-presidential-campaign-navy-pier/

Sen. Bernie Sanders called his experience in 1960s Chicago “an extraordinary moment in my life” that “very much shaped my world view” Sunday as he held one of the first rallies of his latest White House bid at Navy Pier.

His speech in front of a boisterous crowd of supporters continued a theme that began earlier in the weekend. Sanders has begun to share a little more about his personal life with voters, and his speech in Chicago followed similar remarks in Brooklyn.

“Chicago provided me, for the first time in my life, the opportunity to put two and two together in understanding how the real world worked,” Sanders said. “To understand what power was about in this country and who the people were who had that power. Those years enabled me to understand a little bit about how wars get started.”

Though Sanders largely steered clear of present-day Chicago politics — he came to town in the midst of a contentious mayoral runoff election — Sanders did mention Laquan McDonald as he decried what he called a “terrible level of police violence against unarmed people in the minority community.”

Doesn’t it just figure that his son would work at legal services?

Positive write-up on CNN

https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/03/politics/bernie-sanders-first-weekend-chicago-brooklyn/index.html

Sen. Bernie Sanders brought it all back home this weekend, hosting a pair of boisterous rallies in two cities he credited for a political awakening that set him on a path that could, as he launches his second presidential campaign, deliver him to the White House.

In Chicago on Sunday night, Sanders again offered a rare public embrace of his roots, telling supporters at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall that his years here as a student activist were “an extraordinary moment in my life and very much shaped my world view and what I wanted to do.”

But even as Sanders broadened the scope of his stump speech to include more details about his youth, his message never strayed far from the core argument that would vault him to political stardom decades later. Sanders’ vow to uproot and discard the private health insurance industry and deliver a single-payer system still drew the loudest applause from an already spirited crowd. The twin spectacles of Brooklyn and Chicago will also validate the belief among Sanders’ allies that his support is stickier than many observers, including some wishful Democrats, might have hoped or predicted.

Sanders will return to the Midwest in a few days with a charge to do the same when he makes his 2020 Iowa debut. On Thursday, he will hold a rally at Council Bluffs’ Mid-America Center, an arena with a listed “concert capacity” of 8,000. President Donald Trump, who held an event there last October, will surely be watching the gate.

A day later, Sanders will be in Iowa City, where the University of Iowa’s campus Democrats and the city’s Young Democratic Socialists of America chapter will cohost a rally in a ballroom that fits more than 1,000 people. Then it’s on to Des Moines for a Saturday morning event on the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

But California seemed a long way off on Sunday night in Chicago, where patches of Lake Michigan sat icily still as its waves labored toward its western bank. Inside Navy Pier’s cavernous Festival Hall, as Sanders left the stage to the Doobie Brothers’ “Taking It To The Streets” the heat of the 2020 presidential primary was steadily rising.

Not surprising that NBC finds this guy to comment on Bernie’s weekend

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/ncna978771

“Bernie always stumbled on issues of race and his use of class as a catch-all gives the impression that he’s either unable or unwilling to address the specific concerns of African-Americans or he’s trying to avoid what he feels is identity politics,” said Basil Smikle, a former executive director of the New York State Democratic Party.

Who is Mr. Smikle?

“Basil has been a key advisor and a tremendous public servant. It is an honor to have him on my team as we work to serve the people of New York.”

Hi gang! It’s been awhile. Glad to see this site is still going strong.
It’s going to be a knock out street brawl this time from what I can see the HRC bitter enders stewing up on social media.

Hey, how do I embed a tweet?

Let’s see if this works https://twitter.com/Deoliver47/status/1102382497424424960

roonie

Thank you. The woman who personally inspired me to fight – and keep fighting for the right to vote was Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer. Bernie Sanders spat on all she fought for and was beaten for.

roonie

Ok. I think it works.
TOP’s most deranged HRC bitter ender is pouring her acid all over Bernie on twitter. What the hell is she referring to?
I am proud I had the restraint to not engage her/them. She is also belittlling Bernie’s activism.

And last nigth Charles Gaba (Brainwrap) made a tweet about how finally Bernie is interested in diverstiy.

How do you guys deal with these lies and smears.

Some small schadenfreude related to her, is that Puerto Ricas female Mayor is a Bernie co-chair!! Whoo hoo!..Denise is tied to PR somehow (don’t read her TOP diaries so don’t know details).

jcitybone

Denise I assume is of Puerto Rican heritage. She is a deranged piece of work isn’t she? When Yulin Cruz was picked as Bernie’s co-chair we joked about seeking comment from her.

roonie

Her venomous hateful smears are something to behold. And her whole posse who swarms with her.
