6/5 Super June Primary Night Thread

The Progressive Wing Posted on June 5, 2018 by BennyJune 5, 2018

Tonight is the Dem primaries for AL, CA, IA, MT, MS NJ, NM and CA. The state being watched most closely is the largest one, California, especially in the house, senate and governor’s races. From Politico: Democrats are more assured of getting general election candidates through the primary in four other Clinton-won, Republican-held districts in California. And in the governor’s race, it could be Republicans who end up without a candidate. That race is a battle for second place. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom has led public polling, but former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and state Treasurer John Chiang, both … Continue reading →

Charles Darwin and compassion & Open Thread

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 15, 2017 by magsviewOctober 15, 2017

How are my birdie friends doing tonight?   I thought I’d share a piece about Charles Darwin that I read today. It’s not recent, was posted in 2010, but I’d never see it before, and it was fun to read about some scientific research about altruism/sympathy/compassion (Darwin’s word for it back then was “sympathy”). In 1871, eleven years before his death, Charles Darwin published what has been called his “greatest unread book,” The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex. His little-known discussion of sympathy in this book reveals a facet of Darwin’s thinking that is contrary to … Continue reading →

10/13 Open Thread -Jane O’Meara Sanders Interviewed In Ireland, Some Upset That Sanders To Speak To Women & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 13, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 13, 2017

Jane O’Meara Sanders talks Harvey Weinstein, Bernie’s possible 2020 bid, and her love for Ireland

Jane O’Meara Sanders, the wife of Bernie Sanders, joined Maura Derrane and Dáithí Ó Sé on the Today show.

Dr Sanders was speaking ahead of her talk at Limerick’s Concert Hall as part of an Irish American festival.

She revealed that Bernie’s campaign was not supported by Harvey Weinstein, a well-known supporter of the Democratic party, and said that Weinstein advised the Clinton campaign on how to defeat her husband.

…

On whether or not Bernie would run for president in 2020 when he is 77 years of age, she simply said that they believe “age is just a number”.

10/11 News Roundup – Progressives Push For A Primary Challenge For Feinstein, The Fight For “Tuition Free College” & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 11, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 11, 2017

Hello friends!

Starting off with the TheProgressives Push for A Feinstein Primary Challenge:

Progressives are gearing up to challenge Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) after the long-time senator announced Monday that she will run for re-election next year.

Confirming her bid on Twitter, Feinstein vowed to keep working on “ending gun violence, combating climate change,” and addressing “access to healthcare.”

However, during her five terms in the U.S. Senate, the 84-year-old has also riled many progressives with her opposition to a single-payer healthcare system and her support for laws such as the Patriot Act and the FISA Act.

In a recent piece for Splinter, formatted as an open letter to the senator, Emma Roller captured a growing sentiment among California progressives:

Let’s face it: You are a hawkish, centrist Democrat in a state full of voters that have become much more liberal than you have shown yourself to be. Perhaps now would be a great time to retire and make way for a candidate who better reflects the views of your constituents?

Now that Feinstein has committed to running, though, constituents and even some other California lawmakers are calling for more progressive candidates to challenge her.

The article goes on to talk about potential challengers and such, but fails to mention that Feinstein already had a primary opponent for months, proud Democratic Socialist David Hildebrand:

David Hildebrand’s Campaign Announcement Video vs Dianne Feinstein

The Progressive Wing Posted on September 29, 2017 by LieparDestinSeptember 29, 2017

As Half of California’s likely voters think Sen. Dianne Feinstein should retire, candidates are stepping out of the Woodworks to try and take the seat.

David Hildebrand is one such person as profiled here at TPW.

David Hildebrand is a Democratic Socialist running to represent the residents of the State of California in the U.S. Senate. The son of a union carpenter, and a member of a union himself, he knows the value of organizing.

David graduated from CSU Sacramento, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Government. He volunteered and eventually became the Staging Location Director for California’s 6th Congressional District. It was during this time that he saw the true power of a grassroots campaign, run by the people and for the people.

After the primary, he felt compelled to stay involved and continue the fight for a better future, and after serious consideration, decided that he would start a U.S. Senate campaign to represent the working people of California.

David has now launched his first campaign announcement video:

David is very active on Twitterso If that’s your thing, you can follow him there or on facebook.

And just incase they are not listed in the video, here are more of David’s priorities.

David Hildebrand Is Trying To Take Dianne Feinstein’s Senate Seat

The Progressive Wing Posted on August 12, 2017 by LieparDestinAugust 12, 2017

Lots more on Hildrebrand to come in the coming days but as I do some backend work on the website I wanted to out at least throw out a post for people to watch and then inspire them to do some research:

Hildebrand’s Official Website

Residents without healthcare are forced into the emergency room for medical care. These visits increase wait times for severely injured patients, and increases healthcare costs for everybody else. Hospitals and insurance companies will always pass on the costs of the uninsured to those who are. In essence, those covered by health insurance are already paying for those who are not covered, but those prices will rise immensely as emergency room care becomes more widely used.

While we are seeing a push for single-payer in California (SB 562, also known as the Californians for a Healthy California Act), we still need to fight for single-payer on the national scale. SB 562 stipulates that healthcare is a right for all Californians, and cites the rising costs of healthcare in a for-profit system. Coverage is decreasing as premiums grow, an issue of which most Californians are keenly aware.

It is time that the United States joined the rest of the industrialized world and adopt Single-Payer healthcare that includes dental care, mental health care, and prescription medication. Americans cannot afford to be exploited by an overpriced healthcare system.

I support H.R. 676, and I will support all future single-payer healthcare legislation.

&:

Fracking and Oil Pipelines:

I will introduce legislation that will ban fracking, and establish a moratorium on all new fossil fuel pipelines.

Clean Water:

Clean water is a human right. We cannot allow corporations and their puppets in Congress to destroy our limited clean water resources.

I will support all legislation that allows the EPA to investigate and punish corporations that pollute our water.
