11/7 News Roundup – Bernie: Trump Doing Exact Opposite of What He Promised, Progressive Leaders Respond To Paradise Papers & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on November 7, 2017 by LieparDestinNovember 7, 2017

Happy Tuesday TPW readers! Welcome to the new folks (if you have any issues, you can send them to the tpwhelpdesk@gmail.com) and a big thanks for continuing to come back for those who have been here before. Starting the day off with Bernie and I tend to do:

As President, Trump Doing Exact Opposite of What He Promised on the Campaign Trail by Bernie Sanders

When Donald Trump campaigned for president, he told the American people that he would stand up for the working class and take on the political and economic establishment. One year since his election, he has repeatedly reneged on his promises by supporting the interests of the wealthy and powerful at the expense of working families.

During his campaign, candidate Trump said that he was going to “drain the swamp.” Now that he is president, Trump has brought more billionaires into his administration than any president.

While campaigning, Trump told the American people he was going to provide health “insurance for everybody.” As president, he supported a disastrous bill that would have thrown millions off of health insurance, substantially raised premiums for older workers and defunded Planned Parenthood.

As a candidate, Trump said he understood the pain of working families. His budget would slash funding for affordable housing, college financial aid and Head Start.

And while Trump wants to make devastating cuts to programs that working families desperately need, he is working overtime to provide a massive tax break to billionaires like himself.

..

In other words, Trump as a candidate promised the American people one thing, as president he is doing the exact opposite.

But simply stopping Trump’s agenda is not enough. We can join every other major country and guarantee healthcare to all as a right. We can demand that the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations start paying their fair share of taxes. We can create millions of decent paying jobs by rebuilding our nation’s infrastructure. We can reform our broken criminal justice system and pass comprehensive immigration reform. We can raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour and make public colleges and universities tuition-free.

Together we need to build a government and an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1%.

10/16 News – Sanders: The Republican Budget Is Robin Hood In Reverse, Florida’s Toxic Crisis & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 16, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 16, 2017

Happy Monday friends! It’s my last day of vacation so by this time tomorrow I’ll be sitting back in my corporate cubicle and dreading every minute of it! But thats tomorrow so lets go ahead and get on with today’s news. Starting with Bernie of course:

The Republican budget is a gift to billionaires: it’s Robin Hood in reverse by Bernie Sanders

After failing to pass a “healthcare” bill that would have thrown up to 32 million Americans off of health insurance, a bill that was more unpopular than the Wall Street bailout, Donald Trump and the Republican leadership in Congress are back.

Now, they are pushing one of the most destructive and unfair budget and tax proposals in the modern history of our country – a plan that would do incalculable harm to tens of millions of working families, our kids, the sick, the elderly and the poor.

The Republican budget, which will likely be debated on the floor of the Senate this week, is the Robin Hood principle in reverse. It takes from those in need and gives to those who are already living in incredible opulence.

Donald Trump and Republican leaders claim their plan would provide a “big league” tax cut for the middle class. Nothing could be further from the truth. According to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, by the end of the decade, nearly 80% of the tax benefits of the Republican plan would go to the top one percent and 40% would go to the top one-tenth of one percent.

Meanwhile, while the Republicans want to give a $1.9tn tax break to the top one percent, they are proposing massive cuts in programs that working class Americans desperately need.

10/13 Open Thread -Jane O’Meara Sanders Interviewed In Ireland, Some Upset That Sanders To Speak To Women & More

Jane O’Meara Sanders talks Harvey Weinstein, Bernie’s possible 2020 bid, and her love for Ireland

Jane O’Meara Sanders, the wife of Bernie Sanders, joined Maura Derrane and Dáithí Ó Sé on the Today show.

Dr Sanders was speaking ahead of her talk at Limerick’s Concert Hall as part of an Irish American festival.

She revealed that Bernie’s campaign was not supported by Harvey Weinstein, a well-known supporter of the Democratic party, and said that Weinstein advised the Clinton campaign on how to defeat her husband.

…

On whether or not Bernie would run for president in 2020 when he is 77 years of age, she simply said that they believe “age is just a number”.

10/11 News Roundup – Progressives Push For A Primary Challenge For Feinstein, The Fight For “Tuition Free College” & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 11, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 11, 2017

Hello friends!

Starting off with the TheProgressives Push for A Feinstein Primary Challenge:

Progressives are gearing up to challenge Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) after the long-time senator announced Monday that she will run for re-election next year.

Confirming her bid on Twitter, Feinstein vowed to keep working on “ending gun violence, combating climate change,” and addressing “access to healthcare.”

However, during her five terms in the U.S. Senate, the 84-year-old has also riled many progressives with her opposition to a single-payer healthcare system and her support for laws such as the Patriot Act and the FISA Act.

In a recent piece for Splinter, formatted as an open letter to the senator, Emma Roller captured a growing sentiment among California progressives:

Let’s face it: You are a hawkish, centrist Democrat in a state full of voters that have become much more liberal than you have shown yourself to be. Perhaps now would be a great time to retire and make way for a candidate who better reflects the views of your constituents?

Now that Feinstein has committed to running, though, constituents and even some other California lawmakers are calling for more progressive candidates to challenge her.

The article goes on to talk about potential challengers and such, but fails to mention that Feinstein already had a primary opponent for months, proud Democratic Socialist David Hildebrand:

10/6 News Roundup – Sanders to Trump: End Insulting Tweets and Start Rebuilding Puerto Rico & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 6, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 6, 2017

Happy Friday friends!

Starting the day off with Sanders to Trump: End Insulting Tweets and Start Rebuilding Puerto Rico:

In an op-ed directed at President Donald Trump on Thursday, Sen. Bernie Sanders called on the president to quit with the insulting tweets and start doing a better job to help rebuild the storm-ravaged and economically-devastated island of Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory that’s home to millions of American citizens.

In the guest column for the local El Nueva Dia newspaper—titled “Trump: Less Tweets, More Help”—Sanders declares that the people of Puerto Rico “are entitled to the same kind of response as the people of Texas, Florida, Vermont and other regions of the country that have been hit hard by natural disasters. President Donald Trump should be focusing his energies on helping to rebuild Puerto Rico, not attacking San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.”

Sanders excoriates the president—who during his visit to the island earlier this week said the disaster was throwing the federal “budget out of whack” and “costing a lot of money”—for being so grossly insensitive to the dire situation in Puerto Rico while at home pushing a budget that adds tens of billions of dollars to already bloated Pentagon spending and proposing massive giveaways in tax cuts to the nation’s wealthiest individuals and corporations.

“When Congress just passed an almost $700 billion defense bill and is now debating a Republican proposal to give up to $5 trillion in tax cuts to the wealthy and large corporations,” writes Sanders, “we have the resources to provide the help to Puerto Rico that we always do when states and communities are hard hit by hurricanes.”

..

As a growing chorus of renewable energy experts and climate advocates are urging, Sanders also called for the island to be built back with a strict focus on green technologies that make more sense for the island’s long-term economic health and resilience.

“As an island with extraordinary solar and wind capabilities, a new distributed energy system must be built which is based on sustainable energy, not expensive fossil fuel,” Sanders argues. “Not only will this provide less expensive electricity, but it will enable Puerto Rico to better withstand future natural disasters.”

10/3 – “It’s Long Past Time To Act On Gun Safety”, Human Impact On The Planet Reaches A New Scale & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 3, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 3, 2017

Sanders: It’s ‘long past time’ for Congress to act on gun safety

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) on Monday urged Congress to take action in the aftermath of the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas.

The Vermont senator in a statement said his thoughts are with the family and friends of the victims.

Sanders also thanked the first responders, who he said “did an outstanding job responding to this tragedy, saving many lives.”

“Last night’s attack is the deadliest mass shooting in our country’s modern history, and this year there have been more mass shootings than days in the year,” Sanders said.

“In light of the terrible tragedy in Las Vegas and mass shootings across the country, it should be clear to all that we have got to do everything we can to stop guns from falling into the hands of people who should not have them,” he continued.

He added: “It is long past time for Congress to take action on gun safety to save innocent lives.”

9/13 News Roundup – Sanders: “Why We Need Medicare For All”, Bernie Set To Introduce Health Bill Backed By 15+ Senators & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on September 13, 2017 by LieparDestinSeptember 13, 2017

Hello and good day to you friends. It will probably be a big day in healthcare news but I will certainly have any progressive candidate updates, water protector news, etc in the comments.

Starting off with: Bernie Sanders to introduce universal health insurance bill backed by 15 senators

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will introduce legislation on Wednesday that would expand Medicare into a universal health insurance program with the backing of at least 15 Democratic senators – a record level of support for an idea that had been relegated to the fringes during the last Democratic presidency.

“This is where the country has got to go,” Sanders said in an interview at his Senate office. “Right now, if we want to move away from a dysfunctional, wasteful, bureaucratic system into a rational health-care system that guarantees coverage to everyone in a cost-effective way, the only way to do it is Medicare for All.”

Sanders’ bill, the Medicare for All Act of 2017, has no chance of passage in a Republican-run Congress. But after months of behind-the-scenes meetings and a public pressure campaign, the bill is already backed by most of the senators seen as likely 2020 Democratic candidates – if not by most senators facing tough reelection battles in 2018.

The bill would revolutionize America’s health-care system, replacing it with a public system that would be paid for by higher taxes. Everything from emergency surgery to prescription drugs, from mental health to eye care, would be covered, with no co-payments. Americans younger than 18 would immediately obtain “universal Medicare cards,” while Americans not currently eligible for Medicare would be phased into the program over four years. Employer-provided health care would be replaced, with the employers paying higher taxes but no longer on the hook for insurance.

9/7 News Roundup – Sanders Slams Trump’s DACA Decision From The House Floor & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on September 7, 2017 by LieparDestinSeptember 7, 2017

Sanders: Ending DACA ‘cruelest’ presidential act in modern history

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is ripping the Trump administration for ending a key Obama-era immigration program aimed at protecting undocumented immigrants brought into the country as children.

“Trump’s decision to end the DACA program … is the cruelest and most ugly presidential act in the modern history of this country. I cannot think of one single act that is uglier and more cruel,” Sanders said from the Senate floor.

Sanders added that the decision, announced this week by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, is an “abomination.”

Senate Democrats have taken over the Senate floor on Wednesday to protest the decision to wind down the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Democrats are demanding a stand-alone vote on the DREAM Act. Similar to DACA it would allow people brought to the United States illegally as children to continue to live and work freely in the country.

Sanders added that Congress should pass the DREAM Act “as soon as possible.”

We’ll also be discussing the continued Harvey fallout & Irma’s incoming impact and the costs of climate change, Progressive candidate news, the latest water protector & pipeline news and updates, the looming split over single payer & a whole lot more.

Kicking things off with local coverage of Bernie’s NH stops:

Have a great day and if you have any site issues, the tpwheldesk@gmail.com should be able to to help you out.

Dr. Kathie Allen’s Campaign For Congress (UT-03)

The Progressive Wing Posted on August 31, 2017 by LieparDestinAugust 31, 2017

From Kathie Allen for congress>:

*Universal Health Care Coverage:

In Medicare, 99 percent of expenditures go to providers and patients—only 1 percent goes to administrative overhead. In for-profit health care, administrative costs are up to twenty times higher due to multimillion-dollar CEO salaries and dividends to investors. The cost of Medicare could be reduced further by simplifying it and getting rid of unnecessary regulations, but the cost of private health care could be reduced enormously by lowering administrative costs.

I am strongly against privatizing Medicare, Medicaid, or Social Security.

As a nation, we need to get away from the idea that the free market will fix everything. That’s not true, and it’s especially not true about health care. Health care isn’t a commodity, where the price is the most important factor in the buying decision. And no one—especially the poor—should have to worry about the price of a lifesaving operation being too expensive for their budget.

*Native American Tribal Issues

The attitude of the federal government toward Native American tribes has been condescending for far too long. I believe that the government should honor its treaties with Utah’s native tribes—no exceptions.

Tribes should be able to prosecute crimes committed on their lands, make their own laws, and practice self-determination in as wide a purview as possible. The federal government should invest in infrastructure, communications, transportation, education, and addiction treatment programs on tribal lands. Above all, there should be no more broken promises.

Native Americans living on reservations are American citizens, and deserve the same rights as all the rest of us—including the right to vote at an accessible, convenient location.

*Climate Change & Science

We must honor the truth. We cannot make good policy unless we base our understanding firmly upon verifiable facts. Facts are reality, and we ignore them at our peril. A lie does not become true just because it gets repeated over and over again. I am appalled at how false news sources have penetrated our society through the internet. Misleading memes and badly sourced “news” articles are lies attempting to manipulate the vulnerable. These fake stories have weakened the civility of discourse in our society. Everyone has a responsibility to check the facts before sharing and reject unreliable news sources.

Science is the best process human beings have found for discovering the truth. The new technologies science brings us can be used either to help or harm mankind. But the truth itself has no agenda. I am appalled at the lack of respect for science that the Trump administration has shown. We need to use the facts we’ve learned from science to make effective policy.

As a family doctor, I’ve learned over the years that complex health problems require complex treatments. The same is true of public policy. We can no longer afford to deceive ourselves by thinking that complex issues can be solved with simple fixes. It’s simply not true. In our real world, complex problems need innovative, detailed solutions.
