11/6 Midterm Election Night & Open Thread

The Progressive Wing Posted on November 6, 2018 by BennyNovember 6, 2018

Birdies–

Tonight we find out how much of a check the American people want to have on our Executive Branch. Or put it another way, how many of the 1000 legislative seats will the Dems gain from the last 10 years of losses? Will voters feel comfortable with the economy and overlook Trump? Will Trump’s divisiveness prevail and turn out his base?

Will we see our first women Native American Congressional Reps? First AA governor of FL and first female gov of GA? How well will the OR candidates perform in this cycle?

Of course, we hope there are no machine irregularities, but it’s anticipated that some will occur. And election lawyers will be on hand just in case.

In the Senate, Democrats are defending 26 seats while Republicans are only defending nine.

(those are predictions if they are filled in with red or blue, gold signifies toss-up)

In the gubernatorial races, there are 33 races, in which Dems could possibly pick up 9 of them.

(those are predictions if they are filled in with red or blue, gold signifies toss-up)

First polls close at 6ET in Indiana, VT and KY. Most in the MSM are saying to watch the 6th district in KY, but the bellwethers will be in VA 4 GOP races and FL 4 GOP races when the polls close at 7 ET.

Larry Sabato of Crystal Ball expects Dem pick-ups in the gubernatorial races, including Kansas.

Big races:

TX Sen – Beto vs Cruz
NV Sen – Rosen vs Heller
FL Sen – Sick Rott vs Nelson
AZ Sen – McSally vs Sinema
CA Sen – DeLeon vs Feinstein
MO Sen – Hawley vs McCaskill
TN Sen – Breesan vs Blackburn
VT Sen – Sanders vs a pack of Indies (well, not a big race, but it is Bernie’s re-up)

FL Gov – DeSantis vs Gillum
GA Gov – Kemp vs Abrams
MD Gov – Jealous vs Hogan
WI Gov – Evers vs Walker
IL Gov – Pritzker vs Rauner
AZ Gov – Garcia vs Ducey
ID Gov – Jordan vs Little
MI Gov – Whitmer vs Schulette
IA Gov – Hubbell vs Reynolds

MN AG – Ellison vs Wardlow

Add the races you are keen about in the comments!

4/11 News Roundup – Trump, Syria, Russia, Paul Ryan & John Boehner

The Progressive Wing Posted on April 11, 2018 by magsviewApril 12, 2018

Hello All! There’s certainly plenty going on today, not the least of which is how Trump is recklessly threatening Syria and Russia (via Twitter!) over an unsubstantiated gas attack in Syria. Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and “smart!” You shouldn’t be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 11, 2018 Trump’s making more than just financial markets jittery with his tweets! But rattling the financial markets seems to be his new hobby. Oil prices jump … Continue reading →

Cathy Myers’ Fairly Epic 10 Tweets Calling Out Randy Bryce (WI-01)

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 5, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 5, 2017

It’s no secret that since the Randy Bryce rollout, his backers have done everything they can to pretend that the very qualified female candidate Cathy Myers does not exist. Given countless free airtime given to him by MSNBC in which his ad was run, appearances with Joy Ann Reid, write ups in Forbes, The Nation, Business Insider, Mother Jones, NPR and pretty much every mainstream and ‘anti-establishment’ outlets, Cathy Myers nor her ads (just as good as Bryce’s) have been featured in none of these places. Well Cathy is not having any of it and put out 10 tweets the pretty much demolish ‘Ironstache’ as the ‘best candidate’.

Tweets will be in the individual comments beyond the link.

9/13 News Roundup – Sanders: “Why We Need Medicare For All”, Bernie Set To Introduce Health Bill Backed By 15+ Senators & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on September 13, 2017 by LieparDestinSeptember 13, 2017

Hello and good day to you friends. It will probably be a big day in healthcare news but I will certainly have any progressive candidate updates, water protector news, etc in the comments.

Starting off with: Bernie Sanders to introduce universal health insurance bill backed by 15 senators

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., will introduce legislation on Wednesday that would expand Medicare into a universal health insurance program with the backing of at least 15 Democratic senators – a record level of support for an idea that had been relegated to the fringes during the last Democratic presidency.

“This is where the country has got to go,” Sanders said in an interview at his Senate office. “Right now, if we want to move away from a dysfunctional, wasteful, bureaucratic system into a rational health-care system that guarantees coverage to everyone in a cost-effective way, the only way to do it is Medicare for All.”

Sanders’ bill, the Medicare for All Act of 2017, has no chance of passage in a Republican-run Congress. But after months of behind-the-scenes meetings and a public pressure campaign, the bill is already backed by most of the senators seen as likely 2020 Democratic candidates – if not by most senators facing tough reelection battles in 2018.

The bill would revolutionize America’s health-care system, replacing it with a public system that would be paid for by higher taxes. Everything from emergency surgery to prescription drugs, from mental health to eye care, would be covered, with no co-payments. Americans younger than 18 would immediately obtain “universal Medicare cards,” while Americans not currently eligible for Medicare would be phased into the program over four years. Employer-provided health care would be replaced, with the employers paying higher taxes but no longer on the hook for insurance.

Now off to the comments for the rest of the days happenings, including:

*Even more Sanders health-bill discussion
*The 2016 Primary Wars Continue
*Harvey & Irma Spotlight Our Toxic Communities
*Naomi Klein and the Quest for Environmental Justice
*Meet the Socialist Who Hopes to Become New York’s First Arab-American Elected Official
& much More

7/24 News Roundup – Ryan Stone’s Campaign For Congress, The Democrats’ Performance As An Opposition Party & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on July 24, 2017 by LieparDestinJuly 24, 2017

Good morning friends! Below is some information on Ryan Stone, a Justice Democrat who is looking to take on Michael McCaul in Texas’s 10th district and then the rest of the news will be in the comments.

I’m a native son of Texas. Born in Nacogdoches, and raised in Canton, I worked my way through college and graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University. I worked a lot of different jobs along the way. I’ve waited tables, I’ve been a teacher, and I’ve been self-employed as a consultant coaching foreign business executives to improve their English skills. Today I am an accountant for a small business — and a city council member in Manor, TX.

Growing up in a working-class family in East Texas, I know first-hand what it’s like to struggle to put food on the table, pay bills and have to borrow your way to a higher education. The poverty I grew up with has, unfortunately, only worsened in recent years with the erosion of rural job prospects and an ever-widening pay gap. Although Texas has one of the most robust economies in the nation, many of our residents have been left further behind since the recession.

For years I’ve watched friends, family and community members suffer the effects of rural poverty and lack of access to quality healthcare. I see hopelessness and inequality as the unchanging condition for millions of Texans — tens of thousands located right here in the 10th district. Smart, capable, hard-working people strive to make a good life for their families, but they’re hemmed in by lack of opportunity, and priced out of an education that could be their only path to a stable income in the new, global economy. I want to change that.

7/20 News Roundup – Amy Vilela’s Campaign For Congress, Sanders’ Appearance On ‘The View’ & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on July 20, 2017 by LieparDestinJuly 25, 2017

I have recently been advocating non-stop for healthcare across Nevada, as well as across the nation. I’ve been telling the story of my daughter, Shalynne. Two years ago, Shalynne went to the emergency room with nearly all the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of a blood clot. Because she was unable to provide proof of health insurance, she was denied the appropriate care, which ultimately led to her dying in my arms of a pulmonary embolism.

Her death at the hands of our Nation’s barbaric, profit-driven healthcare system, tragically, is a all too familiar story. The fight, not only against repealing the ACA, but for expanded and improved Medicare for All has become my calling. I didn’t choose this fight, it chose me.

I’m tired of witnessing self-proclaimed progressive congressman regurgitating the same old corporatist rhetoric, circumventing the real reason our healthcare system is failing Americans: profit.

As a business woman, I understand all too well that insurance and pharmaceutical companies are solely motivated by profit margins. But I’m not just business woman. I am a human, a grieving mother, a Nevadan, and, now, an activist. I know that healthcare is a human right, not just another consumer product. In order to ensure that all Americans have quality, comprehensive healthcare, we must remove profit motive from the equation. We must fight loudly and proudly for Medicare for All, and I intend to bring this fight all the way to Washington.

7/13 News Roundup – Sanders: “I Am Not Taking 2020 Off Of The Table”, Bernie Endorses Ben Jealous & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on July 13, 2017 by LieparDestinJuly 13, 2017

Via Newsweek:

Bernie Sanders supporters are still feeling the sting of their candidate’s loss in the race for the Democratic nomination for president and Hillary Clinton’s subsequent loss of the election to Donald Trump. Sanders’s fans, political observers and the media have been asking him for months whether he’ll consider running again in 2020.

The Vermont senator’s usual answer is that it’s way too early to talk about the next election. He reiterated as much in an interview that will air Thursday morning on Sirius XM’s “Make It Plain With Mark Thompson.” But when Thompson asked Sanders whether he’s leaving 2020 on the table or taking it off, the senator answered, more directly than he normally does, that he isn’t not considering it.

“No, I am not taking it off the table. I just have not made any decisions,” Sanders said. “And I think it’s much too early,” he continued, directing the conversation to what he believes the public should be focusing on at this time.
