The US Army Asked Twitter How Service Has Impacted People. The Answers Were Gut-Wrenching.
https://medium.com/@caityjohnstone/the-us-army-asked-twitter-how-service-has-impacted-people-the-answers-were-gut-wrenching-a28442c59e4f
After posting a video of a young recruit talking to the camera about how service allows him to better himself “as a man and a warrior”, the US Army tweeted, “How has serving impacted you?”
As of this writing, the post has over 5,300 responses. Most of them are heartbreaking.
“My daughter was raped while in the army,” said one responder. “They took her to the hospital where an all male staff tried to convince her to give the guy a break because it would ruin his life. She persisted. Wouldn’t back down. Did a tour in Iraq. Now suffers from PTSD.”
“I’ve had the same nightmare almost every night for the past 15 years,” said another.
Tweet after tweet after tweet, people used the opportunity that the Army had inadvertently given them to describe how they or their loved one had been chewed up and spit out by a war machine that never cared about them. This article exists solely to document a few of the things that have been posted in that space, partly to help spread public awareness and partly in case the thread gets deleted in the interests of “national security”. Here’s a sampling in no particular order:
Many more examples in Caitlin’s article. We send our young off to war but have failed them once they return. The term “War is Hell” is an understatement.

This is from the UK, but it rings true here as well. Give it a listen. I wish the Democratic party meant this when they bitch about ‘unity’.

Where are the robots designed to replace political consultants?
And lobbyists?

humphrey

This would be as accurate as many of the consultants.😁

Exactly a week ago I started coughing as I clipped some forsythia bushes, like REALLY coughing, hacking. I said, “It must be the forsythia!”

I did outside work all day and ended up coughing for days afterwards, I’m still recovering.

Flowering Shrubs That Cause Allergies

The list of the worst offenders is relatively short, allowing the sensitive gardener to avoid them altogether, though a nearby neighbor is very likely to have at least one of those plants growing in the yard.

Turns out forsythia is listed first on that list. That stuff is all over the place around here!

The other two they list in the article are:
-Privet
-Jasmine

Also, did you hear this? I’m in a constant battle with poison ivy, partly because I hate to use herbicides:

What Climate Change Feels Like: A More Toxic Poison Ivy

Carbon dioxide does more than just feed plants — it also alters their toxic properties. Researchers have found that plants like poison ivy have become bigger and more poisonous as global carbon dioxide levels have risen.

In a 2006 study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Jacqueline Mohan, Lewis Ziska, a plant physiologist with the United States Department of Agriculture, and their colleagues found that poison ivy grew larger leaves and produced a more toxic form of the rash-inducing compound urushiol when grown under higher carbon dioxide conditions.

Where is this? When I was a child (many many moons ago) I went to a camp in upstate NY called Camp Manitou.

LieparDestin

The cliff dwellings and Garden of the Gods are just outside Colorado Springs.

The Great Sand Dunes are about 2.5 hours from Trinidad, Co, and everyone should make it a must go destination

Good thread!

At the #WisCon43 / #WC43 #SFFLabor panel. Notes to follow in this thread.

Prospect of militarizing space (ugh, space force) brings in additional forms of power that can be leveraged against laborers.

Discussion of Bioware(/gamedev companies) and their sh*tty labor practices… leveraging consumers/fandom against unions (‘we might have to cut the jobs of those who complain/organize, delaying the game/product!’)

What can we do now to protect space laborers in the future?

Airtight international law, no loopholes that corporations can exploit.

I’m glad this stuff is being discussed and brought to light.

Who controls air/power/heat/etc becomes even more critical in space. Can be “charged” for air, or the threat of the loss of heat can be leveraged by those in power, or air mixtures can be manipulated to cause effects in laborers.

Union busting in space: in limited-resource situations, “competition” for jobs can be a life or death circumstance. What happens when replacement workers get sent? Are there scabs in space? How will automation affect things?
[the phrase “robot scabs” was used & I am DELIGHTED]

At what point might we have to challenge the idea of a company “breeding” a worker population comprised of specific demographics (ages, genders, physical abilities, etc), indentured to the companies that “raised” / covered the costs of “raising” them?

polarbear4

Yikes.

Boy, the NYT is really going after Bernie today. Two articles, and I won’t paste the links.

Fact-Checking Bernie Sanders on the Campaign Trail
Mr. Sanders has campaigned on his record of popularizing progressive positions and taking aim at President Trump. Here’s a fact-check of his remarks.

Senator Bernie Sanders is no longer a front-runner. He brought his campaign home to Vermont and is hosting fund-raisers.

Why not also run a picture of him with a money tree, three houses and a caption about how he’s rich and cheap while they’re at it? Oh, that’s right, Politico beat them to it.

Look at how they buried Bernie in this list,

Joining Harris at the party’s convention will be more than half the announced Democratic field: Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sanders; Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Ind.; Reps. Eric Swalwell of Dublin and Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii; former Reps. Beto O’Rourke of Texas and John Delaney of Maryland; former Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper and current Washington Gov. Jay Inslee; and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro.

and how they covered for Biden. I’d bet Joe has a bunch of fundraisers lined up and his campaign is worried that he COULD get “lost in the scrum”, so best to avoid and go shake hands with rich people?

One big name not expected to be here is Biden. But that’s more of a front-runner’s decision not to get lost in the scrum.
