Perez is such an awful speaker!

Benny

In order of stage position..the Dem candidates

DNC Debate June 26 Pic with order of where the candidates stand.JPG
Benny

It’s debate time, night one

Candidates introduced alphabetically…

Rules of the road..

60 seconds to respond, 30 sec rebuttal. No opening statements.

Sen Warren gets the first question about her “plans”. Are they too risky for the economy when most GOP and 60 Dems think economy is fine?

Warren: who is the economy is working for?

Klobuchar is asked a similar question to Warren’s. She doesn’t favor college for everyone when health care is a big issue. She would double Pell Grants, easier for students to pay off their debts.

O’Roarke: how much change is needed and what is doable? O’Roarke answers most of the question first in Spanish to stand out. 2T tax cut was un-necessary. Spread Democracy. Will you favor a 70% marginal tax rate? He favors going up to 28% for corporations.

Booker is asked about breaking up monopolies. He agrees there is too much consolidation, including pharma. He will appoint judges and DOJ to deal with the growing corporate power.

Warren is asked if she is picking winners and losers? She said we need to haee the courage to take on the big corporations.

Warren is the only one is staying within the time constraints.

Benny

Castro is asked if women should be paid more fairly and equally? Yes, and we should pass ERA.

Gabbard, same question: she is isn’t exactly answering the question, instead focusing on not engaging in regime change.

DeBlasio is questioned about being the mayor of a city that is illustrative of incomme inequality. How would he tackle inequality. Dems need to put money back into the hands of working people.

Delaney, same question: he would introduce paid family leave, doubling EITC. living wage (whatever that is)

Inslee same question: he favors reinvigorating unions and collective bargaining. He is the first to attack Trump.

Benny

Ryan is also attacking Trump for saying not to sell their houses in Youngstown,OH, yet automotive workers got their jobs shipped to China. He wants to bring back 1/2 the jobs.

Warren believes the shot in the economy could be the GND, the products byof should be required to be manufactured in the US.

WindDancer13

Refreshing! Listening to Bernie’s proposals and points in different accents.

Benny

Absolutely.

Gabbard isn’t for MfA. I’m surprised.

WindDancer13

She didn’t raise her hand, but when asked she backed M4A. Guessing she will drop out before Iowa and endorse Bernie and had to get that in.

Benny

DeBlasio and Warren raised their hands of displacing private insurance with public insurance. It wasn’t determined if public means MfA though)

Klobuchar says she favors a public option and cutting prescription costs. MfA is too bold because most folks she knows have private insurance via employers.

Warren clarifies and says she favors MfA because of bankruptcies often occurring as result of long hospital stays, etc. She will fight for it.

O’Roarke favors Medicare for America. He would not replace private insurance. DeBlasio jumps in and says he will get rid of private insurance. Delaney also jumps forward and says everything is fine. Don’t fix what isn’t broken. MfA would cause hospitals to go broke.

Tyrannocaster

I’m really tired of Klobuchar. Her campaign motto is “Yes, we can’t.”

I missed it — what was the question just now that only Warren & de Blasio raised their hand for? Was it just “who supports Medicare for All?”

Benny

See my comment above yours.

bernin
bernin

Got it, thanks! Disappointing that people like Ryan & Booker have “signed onto” Medicare For All but apparently don’t fully support it when they’re questioned about it.

magsview

Why is Warren getting a second question before so many haven’t had one question?

Maybe I’ve missed more than I thought since I’m dashing around.

Benny

And for that reason, others are jumping in when not asked, which I think is fine.

Benny

Inslee differentiates himself as the sole candi? date that has passed a public option and feels strongly about a woman’s right to choose. Castro says he believes in reproductive justice and health care for trans women. Warren favors making Roe a federal law.

Next question to Booker: should pharma be held responsible for the opioid crises? Yes. And he makes it plain he doesn’t take corporate PAC money from pharma. Hmm.. but bundles..

WindDancer13

Lol. When he said that there was one sole candidate with a health care plan (very loosely paraphrased), I expected him to say Bernie.

Benny

Immigration is the next topic.

Castro gets to answer first. The image of Oscar and his daughter’s death should piss off everyone. He also said he would get more judges for asylum seekers, address issues of economy and security in Guatemala and Honduras. Get rid of Section 1325 of INA. He calls on all candidates to go on record for repealing Sec 1325.

Booker follows O’Roarke in answering in Spanish first, then in English.

Benny

O’Roarke is asked in Spanish what he would do. He answers in Spanish, would not separate families. No detention of families who are here for personal security. Castro calls out Beto for not repealing Sec 1325.

I will rewatch later to get the cross talk between Castro and Beto.

Benny

Ryan agrees with Castro about the repeal of Sec 1325. Ryan expresses outrage at Trump for not taking care of sick kids.

Booker says he favors civil process over a criminal process, which clarifies and affirms Castro’s point.

Benny

Inslee says that Washington state welcomes refugees. He was the first to stand up to Trump’s Muslim ban.

Tyrannocaster

Beto may have answered in Spanish, but it wasn’t very good Spanish. I don’t think I’d want to do that, personally. (Disclaimer; I speak two languages, although not Spanish. But it’s easy to find transcripts; AOC said the answers in Spanish were “even humorous”, LOL.)

Benny

Next topic is Iran.

Booker did not raise his hand about rejoining the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran. He said he would negotiate a better deal. Klobuchar picks up Bernie’s mantel that Congress has to authorize AMUF.

Benny

Gabbard says that Trump and his ilk are escalating tensions with Iran.

WindDancer13

Nice little jab at HRC supporters who are still crying about her loss (and blaming Bernie).

Benny

I was gone longer than the commercial break, who jabbed HRC?

WindDancer13

They talked about favorability. The point was that HRC’s were so low (about the same as Trump’s) played a large part in her loss.

WindDancer13

Something I found out today…HRC had the popular vote over Obama in the 2008 primaries, so she was only too well aware of how important states were. Her loss in 2016 was because she ignored states.

Benny

Next line of questions will be about assault weapons and gun control, Republicans’ favor topic. 🙂

Warren is asked what to do with the 100 millions of guns. She says gun violence is a health emergency. She favors background checks, research. It’s not an across the board issue.

Booker has a gov’t gun buyback program, how would it work. He doesn’t answer the question, but instead expresses concerns about the corporate gun lobby.

Castro is also asked what he would do to migigate gun violence, particularly in schools. Ryan supports all of the gun reforms, social/emotional learning in school.

jcitybone

Surprisingly, Booker is getting more air time than Warren

Benny

Booker is taking more than 60 sec to answer. I’m surprised Castro has received as much time as he has.

jcitybone

They are also going to him first a lot

Benny

Yes, the advertisers probably had that request.

humphrey

I am not watching the debate thanks for the coverage. I am going to throw in a few comments from the twittersphere.

humphrey

Benny

The 64% prevailed.

humphrey

humphrey

Benny

Booker is asked another question about getting his judicial appointments through. He continues talking about guns, little about a GOP majority. DeBlasio is asked about the judicial community, but also chooses to talk about policing issues in communities, especially AA. Mentions he’s had the “talk” with his biracial son.

Warren is asked if she has a plan to deal with McConnell, who stonewalled judicial picks by Obama.

Delaney is given an opportunity to talk about dealing with McConnell. He doesn’t have a good answer either. He said he will sign any bipartisan legislation.

No one seems to have an answer any better than Bernie’s position, which is to use the bully pulpit.

polarbear4

“I will sign any bipartisan legislation!“

#DRNIK!

humphrey

jcitybone

Actually, I think de Blasio has been pretty good—one of the only two for M4A.

Benny

Maddow asks Inslee about his climate change plan. He says it is a climate crisis. His state passed a 100% green, renewable electrical grid.

O’Roarke is asked about his plan. He brings up sustainable ag, which is a good idea.

Benny

Castro brings up Puerto Rico and the need for restoration, resilency funding.

jcitybone

WindDancer13

I thought all the Republican politicians from Florida were climate deniers. Where does Delaney get the idea they will work with him?

WindDancer13

Tulsi is out, isn’t she?

Benny

So is Delaney, but I give him props for interjecting his ideas, even if I strongly disagree with the ideas.

Benny

Todd had to disrupt the line of questioning with “gotcha” or wedge issue questions. He starts with Gabbard as to why the LGBTQ community should trust her.

Booker jumps in with trans who are AA, more murders are within trans community, especially women.

Klobuchar is asked why AA’s should vote for her (as a white woman implicitly).

WindDancer13

Honesty? Saudi Arabia attacked us on 9/11.

Benny

Ryan brings up a good point that Trump doesn’t have a full complement of State Dept personnel to deal with wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, Gabbard criticizes Ryan’s answer that we have to remain engaged; the men and women need to be brought home. She corrects Ryan when he said the US wasn’t around when the Taliban attacked the US. She reminds him it was Al Queda. (adios Ryan)

Biggest geographical challenge:

Most everyone says China. DeBlasio says Russia for trying to undermine our next elections.

Hot potato now: impeachment

O’Roarke is in favor of starting impeachment proceedings
Delaney: supports Pelosi’s decision not to impeach at the moment. Blows a kiss to Iowa too. Says most people don’t care about impeachment.

WindDancer13

LOL. Klobacher answered the thought I had in my head…paper ballots need to be in place in order to address the things that Delaney brought up. As well as getting rid of Trump.

WindDancer13

Delaney “We saved the world” He doesn’t even know history and ignores the fact that we are currently destroying it.

jcitybone

To me this was the biggest takeaway of a blah debate night. Too many on stage

https://news.vice.com/en_us/article/ywy4jj/elizabeth-warren-just-went-full-medicare-for-all?utm_source=reddit.com

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren bear-hugged “Medicare for All” during the first Democratic presidential debate Wednesday and took her support a step further than she’s been willing to go in the past.

Warren, who has previously voiced tepid support for Medicare for All, raised her hand when the ten candidates onstage were asked if they supported a policy to “abolish their private health insurance and replace it with a government-run plan.”

“I’m with Bernie on Medicare for All,” Warren said afterward.

That’s much clearer than the Massachusetts senator has been in the past on the major health insurance reform plan championed by Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders. Warren is one of a half-dozen Democratic senators running for president who’d cosponsored the legislation while talking of the plan as just one of many alternatives to improving health insurance.

But Warren was unequivocal onstage Wednesday. She said that health insurance companies were only interested in maximizing profits, leaving “families with rising premiums, rising copays, and fighting with insurance companies.”

“Medicare for All solves that problem. And I understand there are a lot of politicians that say it’s just not possible,” Warren said. “What they’re really telling you is they just won’t fight for it. Well, healthcare is a basic human right. And I will fight for basic human rights.”

polarbear4

wow.

humphrey

Klobuchar should go eat a salad.

WindDancer13

with Melba toast

humphrey

Why not a Comb?

jcitybone

No mention of frontrunner Biden

magsview

Afterwards the hosts were talking about that. The debaters didn’t go after Biden or Sanders.

humphrey

humphrey

Benny

Winner of the debate: Bernie Sanders. Most of his ideas were discussed and claimed as policies the candidates favored.

WindDancer13

Yup.

humphrey

I am watching the after debate show. I haven’t heard this yet. Tweetie just said the winner was Biden.

WindDancer13

Yeah, some of it is a repeat of stuff they ran during an earlier commercial break but some new. Well, if he won tonight, he certainly won’t tomorrow.

Change of topic:

It is unbelievable that this was even happening.

Ford asks Alabama car dealer to end shotgun giveaway after California shooting

“So it’s done. They’ve ended our promotion. I’m very disappointed,” Colin Ward, general manager of Chatom Ford in Chatom, Alabama, said Wednesday.

Chatom Ford’s advertising offered a shotgun, a Bible and an American flag with a car purchase. The offer drew hundreds of calls from across the country from people wanting to buy cars to get the shotgun.

humphrey

Well It is Alabama.

polarbear4

hi!!!! my internet just came back on!!!

humphrey

WindDancer13

Question:

Was it only the men who talked over people and demanded time?

Benny

Tulsi did as well, but mainly in correcting Ryan.

humphrey

humphrey

WindDancer13

You know what would be fun?

When Bernie is asked a question tomorrow if he would say, “Run Elizabeth Warren’s response at xx,xx (video time) for my stance, now I will take THIS time to explain how to accomplish it.” Replace EW with whomever gave the best response from tonight that highlights Bernie’s positions.

humphrey

humphrey

polarbear4

Bernie will likely say GW.

polarbear4

accident. 😜

humphrey

I flipped from MSNBC to CNN to watch the after debate commentary and there was not one progressive talking head to be found. Not that I am surprised.

humphrey

humphrey

I think that she is mimicking Bernie but Ryan Grim is impressed.

Benny

Grim likes Bernie and Warren, and supported Bernie last time. However, from reading his book, I think he switched from Bernie to Warren for this cycle.

humphrey

LOL Tim Ryan haz a sad.
