Site Statistics for TOP – The Progressive Wing

Many of us here are refugees (emigrants?) from TOP (the other place).

A recurring question is how much has “abusing Bernie fans” cost TOP in views (and obviously income)?

There are different metrics, but one metric freely available from quantcast show a decline of 44% in “Global Uniques” from a high for the period of March 8th through April 6th 2016, to the current reporting period of May 7th through June 5th.

I could be wrong, but I think that global uniques refers to the number of uniquely indentifiable users visiting a site (basically IP addresses, plus a cookie or something).

The highest day in that date range is Sunday, March 13, 2016, when there were 2.5 million global uniques. I think this must have been the day of the edict, or there about.

The lowest day in that date range is Monday, May 30th, 2016, Memorial Day, when there were 268 thousand global uniques.

The average daily global uniques has declined by 500,000 in the last month alone.

By any objective measure, the decline in viewership at TOP is monotonic and precipitous.

I imagine after Tuesday, and especially after people find out they can get BNR here, TOP’s site statistics will be even worse.

Don’t be surprised if a certain someone gets a job from a certain presidential candidate. If elected of course.

Interesting. Clearly a cost Kos was willing to pay. He even doubled down on it in late May.

Even with the drop off, Daily Kos is a dominant Democratic Party blog.It will do just fine whether we go there or not. Right now, it’s not a place I hang out much. But I am not boycotting or anything like that.Just not very interesting to me, so I rarely go by other than to BNR.

I don’t see TPW as competing with Daily Kos. I think we are going into a different direction. We have a different project, I think. Dkos was or became (peopel may differ) an establishment blog. That is not our direction.

Our view of the meaning of “progressive” differs from Kos’s understanding.

I love that TPW links to C99, kossaksforSanders, and many other places.

One of the reasons I stayed with dk5 was because they promised site stats! I never got that :(. I am fairly sure we topped the charts for days, if not weeks at a time :).

I am certain you did very often. Especially the primary blogs, but also BNR.
Before Kos drove people away,that was a Bernie blog.

He drive away many Bernie supporters and turned it into a sour place full of Hillary Open Threads and insipid content. And the front pages were even worse. 🙂

Sometimes we enter coalitions with moderate Dems.on elections or issues, but Kos’s conduct there is a good lesson about misplaced trust.

His posts began to sound like Claire McCaskill.I found the red baiting most offensive, but that’s just me.

Bernie’s run for president exposed much. The anti-Bush coalition is fraying.

But we should not mistake Dkos for the real world. I have great confidence in the choices Bernie will make. He has been at this for along time and will grow our movement.

The only reason I went there was for the BNR. Now I don’t go there at all.

I used to frequent another site for years and years; it was my go-to place. I recently got banned because I pointed out the abuse that another long-time member suffered from a guest who posted an article there. (The article bashed Bernie supporters.) The response this guest poster wrote was vile and went against the Terms of Service. However, I was the one whose comments were removed and was banned. And I wasn’t the only one. I wonder about that site’s numbers as well.

That’s a roundabout way of saying THANK YOU (to every one here, especially LD) for creating this place, a haven of civility and respect for those who support progressive policies.

I am also a refugee from that place. Last August, several popular and longtime commenters were banned, and many others left in protest, after they complained about censorship, the obvious Clinton bias, and staff violating the Terms of Service. It hasn’t been the same sense. Over the last two weeks, more longtime commenters were banned, and more are sure to come before the election is over.

Has this affected their numbers? Only the management knows for sure.

The absolute only reason I still visit GOS is to tip/rec BNR and socialize with those in its comments who haven’t made the migration. I have ads blocked and the disgusting, hateful content in the sidebar either hidden or blocked as well. I can’t wait until TPW gets into full swing, it’s already looking fabulous and full of familiar (and very welcome) names!

I’d put money on Kos hoping for a cushy reward for his brown-nosing, but I think I’ll give it to Bernie instead. Seems a much better use for it!

Fantastic news. I was a lurker on the big orange site for years (going back to the Bush years), but finally joined this year because of my excitement for Bernie and the possibilities he represented. To say I was/am appalled to see how Bernie supporters were treated by the big honcho himself and his sycophants is an understatement. I was only still going there for BNR and to occasionally poke the monkey, but no more. I’m done. Especially after seeing how not going there could negatively impact the owner (yeah, I’m not bitter… 🙂 ) Thanks so much LD for creating this awesome new site.

I have only been to the GOS/TOP once or twice in the past two weeks, and then only to look at the BNR. I see that LD has now posted the BNR over at C99%, too.

I’m looking forward to more Political Revolution — my husband and I will be going to the Peoples’ Summit. My husband is also still involved with IL4Sanders.

I stopped in over at TOP today to take another look at Rep. Grayson’s diary and to see if I’d received any alerts from staff after recommending the diary and the top comment as well as some other positive comments. I thought that Laura might be handing out some Timeouts for anyone supporting Grayson, but nothing yet.

I also noticed that the majority of my recent comments were in What’s for Dinner diaries which I’ve always participated in. Those, of course, are totally non-political so my involvement over there has drastically declined at this point.

I think the most disturbing thing to me is their now ‘accidental isms’. The anti-Trump demonstrations were the last straw. The RW stuff spewing forth about Mexicans, flags, belonging, identity, etc. had me floored. Folks, esp. POC, were attempting to move the dialog and the ‘hurt the party’ double down was incredibly painful. But this was greenlighted by the TOP honcho who had the cojones to write one of the most internally racialized and oppressive missives in one of his bash J. Castro diaries.That’s what I read the NYPost for–not an alleged liberal blog.

What are the bets that many of the trollers abruptly lose interest in posting on DKos when they are no longer required for Berner pile-ons?

I know I’m getting flagged a lot through checking my recs against my rec totals – after incidentally noticing that well over a hundred recs or more seemed to make almost no difference to the totals shown, but of course now, it’s invisible sabotage rather than community moderation… the echo chamber may wind up with few and distant echoes, in the end. Thank you very much for here, Liepar – this feels like home.

It’s complicated for me. I’ve been there almost 13 years and know many other longtime users IRL, from having attended NN most years. I was also the NYC meetup organizer for a number of years. As a local-politics activist, I know the importance of community, and I have always considered that aspect of the site important.
Leaving entirely would mean leaving some good friends behind. Thankfully, almost none of them have indulged in the type of abuse that is driving me away, and so I plan to continue my presence there, but in a very limited and highly selective way.
Thanks, LD, for creating this site. I’m here to help build a better Democratic Party. I hope that I’ve found a place of progressiveness and civility.

Just come by here from time to time.
Each person makes his or her own decision and it’s all ok.
This blog is about building and supporting the progressive wing of the Dem Party and progressives generally. There’s more room here for many views. But it’s not trying to supplant Daily Kos. Just going in a different direction a bit.

Thanks for the update! I love going there and seeing those numbers. Weird that it’s up since Memorial Day, but maybe because people are following the primaries. I think after today we’ll see a big drop, a further drop after DC, precipitous drops after the convention. Also weird is that big spike on March 13 – I thought that was March 15 because that’s when the ides of March edict came out.
