Justice Ruth Ginsburg in Baltimore Hospital for Possible Infection
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was admitted to a Baltimore hospital Tuesday for the treatment of a possible infection and will remain for a few days to receive intravenous antibiotics, the Supreme Court said.
The court said Justice Ginsburg, 87 years old, was admitted to Johns Hopkins Hospital and underwent an endoscopic procedure to clean out a bile duct stent. The justice experienced fever and chills but is now resting comfortably, the court said.
Justice Ginsburg’s latest hospitalization comes two months after she was admitted to the same hospital for treatment of a benign gallbladder condition and a gallstone that caused an infection.
The justice, during her May stint at Johns Hopkins, participated in the court’s oral arguments from the hospital, a setup made possible because the court was hearing cases by telephone because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Supreme Court ended its annual term last week, though the justices are still handling emergency legal matters during their summer break, including a battle over federal executions.
Justice Ginsburg, who has served on the court since 1993, is a four-time cancer survivor, most recently being treated for a tumor on her pancreas last year.
