10/23 News Roundup – Bernie Brings His Message To Hundreds In Rollinsford, Sanders To Rally In Somerville & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 23, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 23, 2017

Happy Monday friends!

Plenty of news to sort through today so I’ll just start with Sanders in Rollinsford and go from there:

Sanders brings message on health care, education, taxes to hundreds in Rollinsford

Bernie Sanders was the keynote speaker for the Strafford County Democrats’ fall event, and he drew a large crowd, including many state Democrats.

The Martel Roberge American Legion Post was set up with 500 chairs, but Rollinsford Selectman Mike Rollo estimated 600 people were present.

Sanders talked about health care, education, workers’ wages and the politics of Washington.

“We can sit here and make fun of Donald Trump and that would be easy to do,” said Sanders. “What we need to be doing is focusing, and uniting so we can bring this country back to where it should be, to where all Americans have rights and not just the top tier. We need to not allow this administration to divide us on any level, not on race, religion, country of origin, color of skin or sexual orientation.”

Sanders said he came with good news and bad news out of Washington.

“The good news is that even though the Republican Senate has a 52-to-48 majority, in the last five months, they have tried and failed five times to repeal the Affordable Care Act. That would have made 20 million people lose health insurance.”

Sanders said health insurance is a right for every American. He said the answer is to expand Medicare to everyone and bring in a single-payer health system. He said other countries do it and spend 50 percent less per capita than we do now.

“The bad news is that the Republicans just passed a budget, the ugliest and most destructive budget ever passed in the history of the United States,” said Sanders. “It is a framework and not a done deal and we need to work to defeat it because it is a moral obscenity.”

If/when video becomes available, I’ll have it up!

10/17 News Roundup – Sanders To Make Second Trip To New Hampshire, The Pope Castigates Trump On Climate Change & More

The Progressive Wing Posted on October 17, 2017 by LieparDestinOctober 17, 2017

Happy Tuesday friends! Starting off with some of Bernie’s weekend plans:

Sanders making second trip to NH in less than two months, fueling 2020 speculation

Bernie Sanders is coming back to New Hampshire.

The longtime independent senator from Vermont and 2016 Democratic presidential candidate will headline the Strafford County Democrats’ Fall Celebration this Sunday at the American Legion Hall in Rollinsford.

The visit by Sanders will be his second to the first-in-the-nation presidential primary state in less than two months. Sanders gave the keynote address in Manchester at the annual New Hampshire AFL-CIO Labor Day Breakfast, which was the fourth straight year he headlined the large labor gathering. Later that day, Sanders was also the main attraction at a rally hosted by progressive group Rights and Democracy New Hampshire held in Concord’s Rollins Park.

..

A statement from his political committee said that Sanders will use Sunday’s speech to highlight many of his top issues, including the fight to save the federal health care law, the push for his Medicare-for-all single-payer health care plan, and a $15-per-hour minimum wage.

The committee added that Sanders “will also talk about the importance of electing local candidates in Strafford County, and throughout the country, who share our progressive vision for the future.”

..

While Sanders first faces re-election for his Senate seat next year and hasn’t publicly said if he’ll make another White House bid, he’s not closing any doors to another presidential campaign.

“It’s a no-lose situation for Sanders to continue to visit,” said University of New Hampshire political science professor Dante Scala, a close observer of the New Hampshire presidential primary. “Even if he has no intention of running in 2020, every time he crosses the New Hampshire border, he automatically will get media coverage for the issues he wishes to discuss, as long as the presidency remains an open question for him.”
